Hi Ana, thank you for sharing re-potting the golden barrel. I like your choice on the shallower clay pot and I like the warm color brings out the green and yellow color of the barrel. 💚🌵
J M, I’m glad I had that shallow clay pot. It does look better there than it would have in the other big pot. Thank you for watching and have a great week! 🙂🌵☕️
Good job. I was advised by a professional nurseryman that it’s best to use moist medium when repotting cactus and succulents and to then not water them for a week or so. That way the roots are able to draw in what moisture they want while they are settling in. Also, if one uses dry soil there is a tendency to over water initially in order to try and get the new soil moist. ~ I have a big old golden barrel cactus that has been happy in the same style pot as you used for many years. Their roots mostly grow shallow and wide, so I feel it’s a good pot for them. I really need to change out my plants soil. Hopefully you have inspired me to do so soon!
LOVE OF PLANTS 🌻, that’s a good advice. Thank you. I am such a procrastinator when it comes to repotting bigger cactus. I still have a few more pots that I am trying to ignore. Lol! 😁
That was smart if you to use denim, it’s tough material. I love the way that looks in that terra cotta bowl! That looks like nice gritty soil too. It’s such a beautiful plant! 😀🌵🌵🌵🌵how lucky you are to have such good help!
You and your little helper did an excellent job repotting Ana 😊 Looks great in its new home. I love Golden Barrels too, I hope I can find the white spined variety next year. Thank you for sharing Ana, from Edith & I, have a fantastic Sunday 🌵☀️🌸🌼☕️
Wonderful video, Ana. I just loooove GBs! ❤️ the strawberry pot looks like the old kalan sa probinsya. 🥰 I love your cute helper too. So mabait, helping mommy. You chose the perfect pot as well to repot that awesome plant. Well done, sis. ‘Til next video. Cheers! ☕️❤️
Thanks Daz. Edith mentioned the white spined ones to me before and now I am also looking for them. 😉 Sis Edith, “old style kalan”? Di ko na yata inabot yun. Hahaha. Joke! 😁
Well done. Mine is over 10 years old and has grown its pots. I’m glad to see you changed your pot in a wider rim and shallow pot. I’m currently dreading repotting mine. It’s in a narrow, deep and heavy terracotta pot. 😬
Hi Ana! The container was gifted by your mother in law and this cactus is nicknamed 'Mother in law's stool.' How appropriate that you put the two together.😊 I always like plants elevated, and Robert's done a great job elevating the barrels. Massive thumbs up to the next generation cactus lover who lent a helping hand. From the garden city of India to you and Sir Helps-a-lot, have a fantastic Sunday! Cheers and God bless.
Oh Ana, the shallow terra cotta pot was the perfect choice pot for your beautiful cacti! I can’t wait for mine to grow as large as yours! Simply beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Lyn. I did get poked while repotting this golden barrel on my arms. Hahaha. I wasn’t spared. I like the “caffeine power”. 😀 Have a great week to you and Hans.
Cactus Haven /BobbyJones Loft Hi Robert! What can you say about my bird bath/pedestal? 🤣 You are a professional. I can’t do it the way you do your garden. Your garden is beautiful! 😃
Great work, Ana! 👏👏👏. You repotted the golden barrel perfectly. Love the terracotta pot. It was an excellent choice and fitted the plant so well. Remember my golden barrel that gave it's first bloom? Well, now there's 2 more buds and it's so exciting for me. I'm over the moon as I've waited so long to see a golden barrel flower in person. Hope yours will bloom for you some day. 🌵🌸🌺💐🌻🍁
I bought a very old and large barrel cactus from someone who was moving to Hawaii so they couldn’t take their plants with them and so far there haven’t been any blooms but I thought it was blooming but I think it is growing pups for the first time...should I just let the pups grow and leave them or should I transplant them into their own pots at some point?
@@ericaracz Hi Erica! Since you came into my comments section, I'll just give an answer based on my personal prefered opinion. First, I'll say how lucky you are for having the opportunity to buy a large old barrel. From what I've researched Barrel cactus will only start producing flowers after 30yrs and it has to be under full sun. My Barrel that has flowered was bought when it was about 8in in circumference. It's been with me for about 20yrs now so it might be around 30yrs. But no pups whatsoever. I've another that's pretty small but it has quite a few pups around the mama. I never like taking off pups from the mother as I don't like seeing the holes and gaps that's left behind. It'll take quite sometime for the other pups to slowly cover up the gaps. But some people do take off the pups so that the cactus will have a better chance of producing flowers. So it's all up to you, Erica. It's your plant so do whatever you feel will be better for the Barrel but think of how it'll look...with or without pups. I've some big barrel that are single specimen and 3 that has pups. Both types are beauties in their own way. I hope my personal opinion here will help you out. 💐🌻🌵🌸🌺
Molly Cher ~ I am newer to the barrel cactuses so this might be a silly question but do the individual pups flower when attached to the mom or only when they have matured? When I received the barrel cactus it came in a pot with little cacti pouring out the side of it and the little cacti all flowered this spring/summer with beautiful bright reddish/orange flower so are all those little guys pups from the barrel cactus or a separate cactus. I thought it needed to be reported but now I am thinking maybe I should leave it alone? If you want to see a picture of it so you can see what I am talking about there is one on my Instagram @ericaracz Thanks!
Erica, I got curious and checked your Instagram. Those cactus around your barrel are not golden barrel pups. They are some kind of peanut cactus. The flowers are beautiful! 😃
Wow that is lovely. I'd love to have a big golden barrel or two some day. My husband recently had a job at a customers's house and the front yard was all golden barrels and agaves. It was lovely.
I really like your idea of using the blue jeans for taking it out,,I want to get a golden barrel soon ,,thank you for your time and effort with this video
Great job. Those pots with the side pockets are very cute but they are a pain. I have one which I bought for strawberry plants but the sides went dry very fast. Now I have some small cacti on them, they look nice... Cheers to your little helper too😄
Lol! 😄 The golden barrel spines are actually ok if you have tongs or like what I used, denim as the spines don’t detach when you handle them. In other cacti, the spines jump and cling on your gloves or hands! 😟
Omg I love golden barrel cactus. I'm from Mexico and actually it is native to my state! (Querétaro) I saw specimens about 50 year old in a botanical garden here in Querétaro 😄
I just got a small Echinocactus grusonii with white spines, not yellow and after watching your video i realized i have a pot that's very similar to the one you used 😊 although i don't think it's ready for a pot THAT big yet but will be reporting it soon enough. Thank you for another great video (even if this one is 3 yr old when i saw it lol)
I've been wanting to get a small golden barrel and it looks like they grow pretty fast. Also, I didn't realize they had such a shallow root system, I wouldn't have to pot it in a deep pot. Thanks for sharing and new subbie!
Hi Carmen. Yes, good thing I had a spare shallow pot. Golden barrels are one of the toughest cactus I have. They are nice for landscaping, too. Thank you Carmen and welcome! 😃☺️
Is that the same cactus from your previous video? If so, they really do grow fast! I found your videos while looking at re-potting. My friend bought me a golden barrel cactus and gave it to me as a gift today. He did it because he has a fish hook barrel cactus and I tell him every time I visit that I love it. I actually love just about any cactus with spines. haha Anyway, I loved the videos. Thanks for posting.
The original blue pot was beautiful but I think the terracotta bowl is perfect, will give room for many years of growth. The use of the jeans to lift the cactus was ingenious!!!! Love your pedestal ... great recycle for an unused birdbath!! The milk toast at the end was adorable!!! 💖
klcpca, thank you so much for your kind words. 😊 Funny cause that bird bath kept drying up due to the heat here. I got tired refilling it with water. So now it is a plant stand. Lol! You made my son smile too when I read to him your comment about his milk toast.
I couldn’t wait to see how you repotted your golden barrel without you getting covered in bandaids! Loved your helper saying bye to us!!! Would you know of a good online place to buy cactus?
Laura C Laura, I’m new to the cacti community. I have a small collection of about 50. I placed an order with mountain crest gardens recently and was very happy with their cacti. Just ordered another 5 cacti this evening from them.
Good crusoni and cactus, in a strauberry pot. Yuo live near st. Francisco or Las Vegas? Temperatures in winter, spring, summer & autumn? If Desert Nevada have ice in the winter night?
Hi Ana, Need your opinion. My potted grusonii has been kept dry this winter & is about grapefruit size. Do you find they can withstand short periods of freezing temps (about 23 to 31 F/-5 to 0 C for 3 to 5 hours) then warm up to 40 to 45 all day, and be ok? I know it's on me whatever happens, but I would enjoy your opinion.
I’m sure they can withstand about 25-26F for a few days cause that’s about the coldest it gets here in Las Vegas. But lower than that, I’m not so sure. But yours being still a grapefruit size, it may not be able to handle such low temperatures.
Ana I have a barrel cactus in a pot I need to repot it but they are 3 joined. Should I separate them or plant them in a larger pot the way they have grown? I twist off the pups and plant them but what about the big mama cactus? Cheers, 🐝
Beautiful! Love the pot you used, and your pedestal display! Just wondering, what tools were you using to loosen the soil at the beginning, the ones that looked like big tweezers? Also what kind of gloves? They looke pretty heavy duty, and perfect for this job.
Hi, thanks for this video. Nice idea with the jeans :) I wanted to know if you have videos on trimming a barrel cactus. The one I have blooms a bright yellow flower once a year. But it has stopped probably because it has outgrown its pot. From a single barrel, it has grown to multiple in a single pot and some have sprouted branches. I'm confused how to trim this plant and repot it. I don't want to kill it. My wife will end me. She is against trimming it too. But I think it is essential for its health. Its spines grow out and end with a downward hook. So I got to be careful not to get snared while pulling my finger out from between them. :( PS: Finally got some ID. It seems to be a fishhook cactus.
You may take some pups off by twisting them till they come off. But depending on how big the pups are, it may be difficult if you have a tight clump. Repotting and changing its soil will benefit it. Many people like the clumping look.🙂
@@CactusCaffeine thanks so much for your reply! Yes, the clumping is not too bad. But looks messy, it brings out the OCD in me. Lol. Also, repotting with so many vertical cactii may be too dangerous for me. Haha Replanting the pups is a good idea. I would do it. But that means putting the original to rest, which means by wife won't hear any of it. 😅 Hmmm... Maybe I could just trim off some of the excess growth the way you suggested for the pups. I hope that doesn't harm/traumatise the cactus.
Hi i don't know if i asked this before ,but the soil you use did you buy it or did you mix it yourself? Because the soil that is sold here in the Netherlands looks almost like normal soil but has some sand in it
@@CactusCaffeine Well I’m different, I only have 2 meters blurred tunnel vision in one eye so even that’s achallenge. First time I tried to repot the thing it made me bleed because of those prickles so since then it’s been my mother and my aunty who repot that beast, it’s nowhere near the size of you’re’s yet either. I manage better with my zebra plant and my new venus flytrap.
I did it on purpose at that time because I did not want to repot this barrel often. It’s heavy. Now, this cactus has doubled in size and is fitting perfect in its pot. I’d give it 2 more years before I may have to upsize its pot again. 🙂
Hi Ana, thank you for sharing re-potting the golden barrel. I like your choice on the shallower clay pot and I like the warm color brings out the green and yellow color of the barrel. 💚🌵

I always find golden barrel aggressive because of the spines. After I watch your video, I am tempted to get one.
You should. They are very tough. I find these spines easier to handle than glochids. These spines don’t cling on you. 🙂🌵☕️

Do you use tomato fertilizer in your barrel cactus?
No, my barrel cactus is too young to flower still so I just use a cactus/succulent fertilizer.
Cactus Caffeine when do you fertilize?
Twice. I do mine once at the start of spring and another one towards the end of spring or beginning of summer.
Does golden barrell bloom???
Yes. Yellow flowers on top. But the barrel has to be big and old before it starts flowering.
🌵Tutubo kaya dito sa Pilipinas yan lalo kung tagulan?👍
Opo, marami pong nag-aalaga ng golden barrel diyan. Kailangan lang po nasa paso para maisilong kapag tag-ulan. 🙂
@@CactusCaffeine 👍👍👍
@@CactusCaffeine ang ganda kasi ng variety nayan. Salamat 🎉🎉🎉
I think they need even less water than other cactus. Is it right?
Yes. They can go without water for a very long time. 🙂👍🏼
@@CactusCaffeine Thank you!
How many times we need to water it🥺i bought a baby one
Just water whenever the soil is completely dry. It should have a drying period in between watering. 🙂
How old is your GB? :)
Ana no coffee today?
I think the pot is to big for this grusonii.
I did it on purpose at that time because I did not want to repot this barrel often. It’s heavy. Now, this cactus has doubled in size and is fitting perfect in its pot. I’d give it 2 more years before I may have to upsize its pot again. 🙂

Piantumarlo nel vaso nuovo ben centrato costava troppo ?? via non fateli certi video, farete miglio figura.
