  • Hey guys, today I just wanted to take a moment to show you the easiest way to transplant a cactus without getting poked. To do this, I am going to use a Golden Barrel Cactus as an example. It can be difficult to do, but cacti are some of the most rewarding plants you can own!

NOTE: If you have a hard time hearing over the music, try unplugging your headphones and watch without them. I am aware the music is too loud, and I have 100% fixed this in my newer videos, but this was an early video and I was still learning to edit. I apologize for the problem though, and you can be sure this won't happen in any of my newer videos! Thanks for watching!

The Green Alchemist Do the spikes get stuck in the towel? I have a 2 foot cactus that BADLY needs repotting but I’m so terrified of the spikes. I always get stuck and it’s IMPOSSIBLE to get them out. 😕

I had no clue you could take off that much of the roots and a plant not be harmed. Fascinated.

Yes very interesting indeed. Though I wouldn't recommend doing it unless absolutely necessary i.e. with root rot or with other diseases. But the plants can still recover just fine when removing that much of them.

The tongs work well when re-potting cacti. I am surprised you didn't remove the fake flower/glue from the cactus.

Yes I've used tongs for my smaller cacti but the larger ones, like my Argentine saguaro I have to use towels/bathmats and leather gloves. That golden barrel was a pain the last time I repotted it too. Yes there was a ton of hot glue on the plant and I was worried removing it could have done more harm than good.

I use a number of sheets of newspaper wrapped around my cactus.

Thanks for the video. Need your opinion. My potted grusonii has been kept dry this winter & is about grapefruit size. Do you find they can withstand short periods of freezing temps (about 23 to 31 F/-5 to 0 C for 3 to 5 hours) then warm up to 40 to 45 all day, and be ok? I know it's on me whatever happens, but I would enjoy your opinion.

Great video. What fertilizer do you use.

I typically don't use much. Mostly a liquid fertilizer throughout the growing season, diluted. If it was a rough winter I'll give him some fish emulsion mid-spring.
