Based on your analysis, It should not be possible to simulate a bullet that got fired up, right? As the overset mesh cannot leave the background mesh, it should not be possible to have the bullet inside the gun which moves based on the pressure as the overset will exceed the rifles mesh.
If you are simulating the flow over the bullet even after it has left the gun, you are going to have to anyways mesh out side the gun, so would it not interpolate from the background mesh outside the gun?
