  • One of London's Magnificent Seven cemeteries. Includes the memorials to William Booth of the Salvation Army, Isaac Watts, the composer of more than 700 hymns, Police Sergeant Joseph Joyce who was murdered when arresting an offender and George Harrison who 'died in agony'. Also the haunting image of 'Agnes'.

Lovely bird song, these old cemeteries are like little nature reserves as well as interesting local history. Thank you for sharing.

My Grandfather and two of my Grandmothers sisters are buried in this cemetery towards the Church Street side. And i also attended The skinner's Company School for girls from 1973 to 1979. Sadly the school is no more. My Grandfather Arthur John Young worked for Hackney Council until he's death in the Late 60's.

It’s nice to see you venture into the depths of the ivy and the trees.

What an amazingly full and interesting cemetery…the birdsong was an absolute delight as accompaniment for your walk! In my ignorance I didn’t know of the existence of this place, but many fascinating stories there with some of the inscriptions.
I really appreciate your gentle stroll, and trying to pick out the most interesting in the allotted time…looks like someone had been trying hard to keep a lot of undergrowth cut back in places, I wonder if there is actually an up to date account of just how many people have been buried there since it first opened?
Thankyou for taking the time to share with us. Best wishes from Norfolk.

I find this cenetery quite beautiful in its natural state. However I also find it quite haunting and almost spooky compared to cemeteries in Canada. It would be quite a sight to see these English cemeteries from a drone as it would give one a true concept .

There's a gentleman buried there by the name of Leota. He is from the pacific island of Samoa. He was a good friend of the famous missionary John Williams (missionary to the Pacific islands). When John Williams and his family returned to England, he took Leota with him to England. Apparently he died there and the London missionary society paid for his dignified headstone. Josh Williams died a tragic death in Eramanga (New Hebrides). His remains are buried in Apia Samoa. John Williams wife Mary Chauner and their son (Samuel Tamatoa Williams) are also buried there in Abney park along with Leota. I don't believe Leotas grave can be found. But Mary Chauner and her sons headstone can be found. I believe Leota is the only samoan buried there. John Williams died in 1839. Great man of God. 🤗✝️♥️🌴
