What ISN'T stated here is that your hairdryer will cease to function if you don't do this. Our family went through THREE of these (two from Amazon, 1 directly from Shark) before figuring out that the dual layer micro mesh filter screen on the back is simply too fine for a hair dryer. It collects EVERYTHING, even oils or moisture from the air, and in 2-3 weeks will be invisibly clogged, reducing air flow to less than 30% As measured by a digital airflow meter.
This, with an almost daily cleaning with the supplied filter brush.
We returned two if these to Amazon withinthe month return window due to this, thinking something was defective with the motor or the power supply (and you CAN'T get inside or even remove the filter for cleaning). The third one direct from Shark did the same rhing, however. Just watched this video and decided to try my own cleaning before throwing it away (weve had it 6 months).
It worked. Air flow has been mostly restored. However, I did a more thorough cleaning than the video. Here's what I did -
    1. Like the video, cleaned it as best I could with the dry brush.
    2. Used cotton swabs and HOT water to dampen and scrub the surface of the filter, loosening grime and collected detritus., and keeping the dryer on its side to prevent water from draining inward.
    3. Then, I used an oral B vibrating electric tooth brush dipped in WINDEX (original fast dry, no residue formula) to THOROUGHLY vintage and scrub the mesh, still in its side or even upside down so cleaner drips out, not in. Did this for a while!
    4. Then, substituted filtered water on the electric brush to clean off any cleaner residue. This might have been moot, as the Windex evaporated quickly. I did this with the dryer filter upside down again to prevent inward dripping.
    5. I then took a shop vac and while still holding the drying pointed up, used the shopvac to pull air through the dryer and out the filter, pulling out moisture and any left over particles or grime. I sucked it out the back, reversed the shopvac and blew it out from front to back as well.
    6. Left it to dry for an hour, then crossed my fingers and plugged it in. Voila! Lots if air flow. I ran it for several minutes to make sure it was dry, and it all worked great.
So, that's what I did, and it worked. I'm sure Shark would not recommend Windex, or using the Oral B electric toothbrush, or sucking it out with the shop vac, or trying it only am hour after the procedure. I couldn't think of a reason why not, though, and it worked.
SHARK - MAKE THE NEXT FILTER REMOVABLE. if that little disc could have been popped out, this cleaning would have take 30 seconds under the kitchen sink spray...just like my micromesh pour over coffee filter.
I own THREE of your top of the line vacuums and the ninja food processor system, and love them all. This flaw in design was a big miss however.

Ha, thanks. I know that Shark prides the!selves on innovative design and high performance. I realize that the air transport and control circuitry inside the unit is probably highly tuned and possibly delicate, and I'm sure the decision to use the micro mesh screen was to keep the insides free of contaminants, and the fact that it can't be removed was to keep people like me from tampering with it or running it when its knot in place. Given the accessory trigger system that controls the settings, im sure a similar kill switch could be utilized to keep the unit from being rum without the filter.
I'm glad Shark did the right thing and posted a solution video outlining the need for thorough cleaning. Thank you.

Oh thank GOD for you. As a stylist I was getting REALLY upset as it’s been 2 weeks & I couldn’t figure out what the heck to do to get my dryer to work. It kept shutting off/overheating. Your explanation makes perfect sense! As I clean the outside filter every day. (UGH) & not being able to get INSIDE the dryer was really annoying design choice (imo) but I getttt it….. 😢 it was literally turning off on the lowest heat setting & I got it start of December. You saved me from going the hard route. Trying your way immediately. Ty.

Yep, this is super annoying for such an expensive hair dryer. I made the investment hoping it would last. Nothing but problems. I would not repurchase unless they fix this design. They do have a two year warranty. I called customer surface and my video trouble shooting call with them was ended suddenly and now I have to start over again. If I could go back in time I wouldn't have spent money on this.

$300 hair dryer and they want you to use a cotton swab to clean it. Btw, did this method yesterday. I didn’t make it 2 minutes before my hair dryer stopped working today. I also want to add I’ve had this for a little under two years and have only used it maybe 5 times. 🤦🏻‍♀️
I am LIVID I missed my return window. Not only is this hunk of junk heavy and loud, but it inconveniently needs be cleaned almost every use. I have long thick hair and as you can imagine in the time I need to dry my hair “all the dust” it supposedly collects.
Biggest RIP off. I love my 15 year old $20 Remington . Might I add I’ve never “cleaned it” nor has it ever cut off during dry time. I reach for it, over the shark everytime.

This is pretty involved and the hairdryer has to dry for 24 hours??? I use the cleaning brush that came with the hairdryer every single time prior to using the actual hairdryer. The step in the video should not be required to keep this thing from overheating. If daily cleaning of the filter still doesn’t keep it from overheating and shutting off, which happens with my dryer, then there’s something wrong with the dryer. Am I able to request a replacement? Because I’ve had the dryer for a year and the fact that it keeps shutting itself off is not good. It wasn’t like this was a cheap hairdryer either.

I followed this cleaning advice after contacting shark due to low airflow after only 1 year. Now my dryer cuts off after only 30 seconds because it over heats. It did not do this until following these instructions.
Shark will replace my unit since it's only been a year, used less than once a week. BUT they refuse to give me a model that has a removable filter so I will just have the same issue again since this is a DESIGN FLAW.
Plus they are out of stock of hyper air dryer so I don't even know when I will have a functioning hairdryer again.
Terrible way to treat a customer. I have many other shark products that I love but this one is terrible and Shark will not do the right thing.

Agree, this is a horrible design. Cheaper and crappier hair dryers at least come with a removable filter! What the hell, Shark??!!
Mine isn't even a year old & I hate the way it overheats after a very short time (both lowest heat & fan too because I'm diffusing), and then GOOD LUCK trying to clean those little filters with that ineffective brush. (What's that weird sharp thing on the other end of it for anyway?) I've tried a toothbrush and Qtips. The only thing that would help is a removable filter, which- if I have it- there are no instructions on how to remove and clean that way. Worst blow dryer I have ever owned & the only reason I'm keeping it around is the cost- I paid too much to just throw it away.
But I would never recommend getting one, to anyone who asks. Definitely dropped the ball on this one. UGH.
