More videos like this please! Great song of a great band! Like you said; it’s wonderful and magical what music can do to you. The first song I can remember I heard when I was a kid was AC/DC - Night prowler, blasting through the speakers of my fathers old Ford Taunus on our way to kindergarten in the early 90’s😂
I saw these guys live in '84, '86 and '88. First time, I was standing about 10 feet in front of Mike Mills (the bassist). Been to a shit-ton of shows, but I still think that was the best live performance I've ever seen. Just super, super intense.
I have watched several of their live performances of this, he always uses the bullhorn. Considering the subject matter, it lends a depth and power to the performance. My playlist has a live performance over the studio version.
Dude, seeing you getting emotional and reminiscing your childhood while listening to this song- the feeling is mutual 😊 I remember my dad used to play this song too along with LZ, Deep Purple, Duran Duran etc. But I think the most played song throughout my childhood was Fool's Garden - Lemon Tree 😂
I saw them live on Pink Pop Festival maybe 1-2 years before that song was released. Was after the release of Lifes Rich Pagent i think. Yeah at that time i think there were also no well-known dutch bands who played there. Guess at that time i only knew Jan Akkerman and his former band Focus and it took over 10 more years until all those dutch female metal goddess suddenly appeared on the stages😄
R.e.m was probably my first favourite band. Automatic for the People is such a Great album. I think my older brothers listened to them so I did too and they are one of the few non metal bands still in the regular rotation some 25+ plus years later.
I love how Michael sings the chorus over the back up vocals in the chorus and his lyrics and way he sings. Really stands out in the live shows where he uses a megaphone. This is amazing music
This song is superb. MUCH underrated. Definitely NOT anything like the first alternative rock band. I have been a listener to alternative bands since the 60's. Many bands are "alternative" until other bands start using a similar style, Everybody forgets how creative it was when they turned up. Led Zepplin was about a alternative as you could get when the first album came out. The arpeggio guitar riff is one of the greats. Can't agree about the Rick sounds. It is my most unfavourite guitar sounds in the world. Even the Beatles couldn't make it sound good. When I bought my first guitar in the late 60's , I said "I want a guitar that doesn't sound like a Rickenbacker" The effects of Agent orange are STILL occuring. Damaged DNA!!!!
There is BBC TV series "Seven ages of rock" (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Ages_of_Rock) and in the 6th part R.E.M. was presented. I was pleasantly surprised by Michael Stipe interview(s) there - he is such interesting person.
The two songs that stuck with me since a kid was Gary Wright-Dreamweaver and The Guess Who- American Woman, could probably throw in Shocking Blue- I'm your Venus as well.
I love the idea of this series. (Heading over to the In Flames one after this haha!) The first time I heard Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in concert, I cried from pure nostalgia. My dad listened to them so much while I was growing up. So much of my music taste is traced to my parents: rock/folk/country from my dad, pop from my mom. When I hear a song from my youth, it hits in a whole different way. Thank you for sharing this piece of yourself and also just a great gear breakdown ☺️💜🤘🏼🎸 I love REM too! 80's/90's kid haha
R.E.M. was a band that I liked but never really dug into seriously. Nevertheless, I have a couple of LPs from them in my rack, and this song has somehow always appealed to me a lot. It is simple but still just draws you in.
Great video as always! R.E.M. was such a musical influence for me aswell in the early 90’s after hearing the Out of Time album! Probably one of my first memories of music that stuck till this day.
First music video you remember seeing? First song that was "yours" rather than something that your parents introduced you too? I remember having my Janet Jackson "Control" album when I was very young, but Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was probably the song/video that got me headed towards a different type of music.
This was unexpected! I grew up listening to "Automatic for the people" on a yellow audio cassette! I literally consumed the tape... This video really brought up some old memories
Loving the DropKick Murphys intro...one of my favorite live shows ever....excited to see your musical evolution...channel gets better and better week after week!
Love the concept. Love REM. I loved the album Green, came out when I was in college and spending all my $ on stereo equipment and parties, so of course I bought it. I admit Green was when it felt to me that they had gone mainstream, commercial. LOL. Document, and Dead Letter Office, an album of B-sides, were also great.
Hi from Greece ... but don't forget .... Master of puppets live at Seattle ...1989 that performance is one of the best of Metallica from the beginning of the song till the end .... keep the good work
This is a really cool idea to show off the songs that shaped your musical journey. I can't remember the first song I ever heard specifically but it was either Children's Crusade by Sting, Puff the Magic Dragon by Peter, Paul, and Mary, or a song from The Beatles. I was born in 1997 and this was the type of music my parents played for me.
Oh, nice idea to go back in time like this! I have nice memories of me in my mother's car with Zombie from The Cranberries on the radio. Six years old French me didn't know any English and "ee yo hay" was what I was understanding as lyrics for the chorus... ^^'
I'm excited for this series! I can't wait to hear more! Other avenues to ponder for this series - first live concert, first tape/CD you bought with your own money, music from your first family road trip, first record/tape/cd your dad gave you? All good stuff for the future! Thanks!
This was a great left turn. Really enjoyed your reaction. Would be great to see you react to some of the classic bands live and pick up on some of the gear and stage effects maybe compare to today.
That Rickenbacker..... oh man..... You should hear it go on "Wolves, Lower". To me, it's part of Peter Buck's legend. 😄 Sigh.... I miss these guys, lots.
My dad liked to crank "Get Up Stand Up" by Bob Marley on the stereo to wake my sisters and me up in the mornings. If it didn't get us up fast enough he'd walk into our rooms singing it being as annoying as possible.
Good one Tank, this is one of my favourites too. And you’re right music takes you places and bring back memories! Thanks for the background info about Agent Orange and the bands activism.. keep up your good work!
Love the idea of “Rewind”!! So, was there an artist who you looked up to when you were a teen? Maybe do a favorite song by them.. I loved Garbage and Shirley Manson was like my idol lol
Out of all the bands my parents would play as I grew up REM was the first one I personally explored. Losing my Religion was the one that caught my interest. I still call them one of my favorite bands. They had a series where they drove around Athens found a cool spot and then in one take played a song and moved on. I recommend Sing for the Submarine from that series, not for a reaction but just to check out.
Tank in an emotion. It's great segment of Your channel. I love it from first hear and seen. ❤️ I know this song but I don't know it title. Flashback but it's still educative. I count an more emotional Tank in the future.
This was really cool to watch. I am just a little older (Michael Jackson Beat It is probably the earliest song I remember jamming to with my siblings), but I remember R.E.M. being one of the first bands that brought my attention to music outside of the typical 80s stuff with their song Stand.
11:11 you’ll spot a rolling stone flag. That’s me and my gang. Loved T in the Park back in day. It doesn’t exist anymore but I saw some awesome bands there.
Fine Young Cannibals - She Drives Me Crazy was my earliest memory of hearing music as a kid 1990. Honorable mentions: Phil Collins - Another Day in Paradise and Wilson Phillips - Hold On. Btw REM is my favorite band of all time!
Here's a question. When you were getting started as a tech, which band first made you feel like you were in the right profession? Thanks for the REM. Your childhood, my teenage years.
Looking forward to following this series. Many moments in our lifes has a song, or songs attached to it. School years, teen years, hanging with this friend etc. When i think back to my friend and i at Lan, only me and him playing Freelancer 48 hours non stop while listened to Chess - One night in Bangkok. Only that song, on the Winamp playlist, repeat. Good times. Could also be cool if you covered how your musical taste has changed over the years.
Great concept for a react. GREAT band. Keep getting creative on this channel my dude. Good stuff. Edit: on the end of vid request - yeah, man, I want to see all of your non- metal influences. As a kid who grew up throwing elbows in pits at punk shows, I can talk for hours about the rich vocal harmonies of The Beach Boys and CSNY. What do you jam to when you don’t feel like whippin your hair around?
The series will be interesting. Looking forward to it. In the mean time, you've got to hear the new Evergrey - "Where August Mourns". You are going to love it!
Cant wait for you to do a reaction to Swedish band Ghost. Also could be fun to see you go full gear-nerd mode on some Frog Leap Studios videos, the guy in those records most of the stuff on his own and has a shit load of gear.
Awesome! Haven’t heard this song in a long time. One question; of all the reactions you have done........who, in your opinion, has the best bass tone. Also, I guess request, what song was it that you were like, “I need to play bass/guitar.”
I honestly don’t remember that specifically, but I remember hearing “Dig” by Mudvayne for the first time and thinking “well, I’m gonna play bass now”. Hahahaha
For me the song I can first remember listening to and singing out loud was Hermans Hermits I'm Henry the 8th. I was about 5 years old and used to go running around singing that song like a fool. Yes I am that old. If you don't mind I was also wondering about a comment you made when you did a reaction to The Islander by Nightwish. You got very emotional during that reaction and said it reminded you of home. Was it the Celtic feel of the song that got to you or was it something else.
Was there a specific song or band that started your passion for the Bass that made you say that's the sound I want to create. I don't play an instrument but Bass And Drums have always been the sounds that get My attention and focus, rather than the guitar or vocals. Of course the band that was responsible for that was Rush.
Always liked this song as well. Great reaction! Also, curious if there's a specific band/song/album that kind of inspired you to pick up and learn an instrument? (case in point, for me it was Judas Priest - Painkiller that inspired me to pick up guitar)

REM has one of my favorite songs of all time. ‘Losing my religion’. Every time I hear it I sing it out loud, usually in the car though.
Just classic 💯🙌🏼
Old but gold
Losing my Religion is one of my all time favorite 🙏🏼

REM is one of my favorite bands. I still have their Out Of Time cassette. Orange Crush is one of their top songs for me, so haunting.
As a "metalhead". I feckin' love R.E.M.!!!!!
Michael really has a distinctive voice doesnt he. Haven't listened to REM in a long time myself, so I think I may remedy that tonight.
Their first 4 albums are masterpieces.
I have watched several of their live performances of this, he always uses the bullhorn. Considering the subject matter, it lends a depth and power to the performance. My playlist has a live performance over the studio version.

Tank, I'm loving this Rewind series! I'm an #80sborn but very much a #90skid, this was the kind of music I grew up with and man the nostalgia 🙌

Solid basslines and backing vocals that are simply integral to the bands' sound.
