Tennis is a game of momentum swings and typically these high periods last a couple of games at most. How Macca was able to sustain it for 6 games is remarkable but probably more to do with Wilson not changing tactics like you said. Not changing your game plan when things are not going your way is a sure way to lose. I think when you compete, you always have to use your best asset, your mind. Good video and commentary.

Totally agree with you… I was astonished by how long Macca’s purple patch lasted (a second set would’ve been interesting!)

I think what you said about Wilson leaving the ball in Macca's strike zone was spot on. Once Macca loosened up mentally down 0-4, all he had to do was rip shots. Kudos to him for sustaining it. I'm glad he played the game he wanted to and slapped balls because I think that is his style.

I’m looking forward to playing him when I’m back in action! He has a huge game when he’s ‘ON’!

    Great video, as always!
What rackets were they both using?

Thanks Dom! Wilson was using a Yonex Vcore 95 and Macca a Head Speed MP

I see why Macca was a top 2 junior.. Once he got in the zone, he stayed in it.. Which I really think is what we all are chasing on the tennis court! Impressive match from both players!

The funny thing was, as a junior (he was quite small) he had the complete opposite gamestyle. He was known as the wall. All that explosive energy and aggression you saw here, used to go into his movement, scrapping for every ball. Crazy to see how he has flipped this in his adulthood!

Good match, interesting to see how the mental side of things really effected them both at times.
Any plans to do a mic'd up doubles set? I think it'd be useful for club players to see how good doubles players communicate during a match.

Yes, when I’m fit again it’s on my to do list!!

Both of your bros can still play high level tennis but from 4-0 down, Macca turned on the afterburners and was hitting the ball like a futures player!
If Macca could sustain that level of hitting and trained properly, he could play high level British Tour qualies/low level futures.
    Great tennis from both.

You’re right, but it’s definitely a tough gamestyle to stay level headed with. If he could get physically fitter and more controlled mentally, he’s at that level.

@TheTennisMentor oh for sure. He has so much natural power and is a great shot maker. If he could move better and stay more stable mentally, he is capable of competing at futures level for sure.

So why did they hang up their rackets so early?

I’ve spoken about it in a couple of interviews before but think it warrants a dedicated video as it’s a good educational piece for tennis parents… long story short, they burned out!

It’s what happens when parents force their kids into sports, they end up doing it for their parents and it stops becoming enjoyable - school sports, musically it happens all the time when parents vicariously want to live their lives through their kids

wow, that was brilliant to watch, would love to see it again but with a bit of brotherly sledging/coaching coming from the sideline 😅
was a bit perplexed by the racket spin at the start, in Australia we spin it on the ground and let it fall, never seen it done on a net like that.

    • @TheTennisMentor

There’ll be plenty of sledging in the Me vs Macca match I’m sure!!

You versus Macca...I think your big serve and smart play will give you a chance but if Macca is feeling it and teeing off, I think he wins because it's clear, Macca can play a very high level of tennis when he wants to.
Tough one to predict but, I'll go Ash for the win just, because of your serve and high tennis IQ!

I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes. I would have loved to have seen Wilson throw in some more variety and win a few more points to see how Macca reacted… but we will have to wait till I do it instead!
      Thanks for your support! 🤙
