  • Sherpas are usually native to the mountainous regions of Nepal and the Himalayas. These Tibetan mountain people traditionally work there as porters. But the profession also exists in Europe. In the High Tatra National Park in Slovakia, these so called "last European Sherpas", carry food, drinks and materials to the mountain lodges. Sometimes with as much as 100 kilograms (220 lbs.) on their backs. Without them, the mountain huts cannot be sustained. Twice a year, these Slovakian Sherpas compete to determine the fastest carrier.

Does anyone sell these backpack rigs? I wanna carry my costco groceries to the second floor in one trip. I'm thinking aluminum or carbon fiber would work.

For those interested: If you ever visit the Tatras and want to learn more about the Tatra porters/sherpas and their history, visit the Rainerova chata chalet in Malá Studená dolina. Built in 1863 as the oldest and smallest chalet, it houses the tiny Tatra mountain porter museum, the only of its kind in the world. Buy some warm tea and look through the humble exhibits. :-) Been to the little chalet several times, even before they reconstructed it when I was still a kid, and it's one of the cutest buildings in my homeland.

How do they balance? That thing is 1,5 meters higher than him! The centre of gravity must be sooo high. Like how??

@The Kito It's all a matter of balance and, as one of the sherpas said, a "mental thing". 🙄

Mind dosn't get over physical law, they always put the heaviest things in their back and the lightest on top. No matter how high it is, as long as there's enough weight at the bottom it stands.

@@viahney7200 except they don't. In one of the documentaries Štefan said himself that the heaviest thing goes behind the neck, not at the bottom.

Ziplines are easy mode ! Knowing about these guys for well over a quarter century, they don't need any ziplines or fancy hi-tech stuff.

It's in a national park within the highest protection zone, so nope. And from what I understand, most of people working there do not want that either, they are heavy supporters for strict regulations so that the unique ecosystems are preserved.
