My Olympus 9-18mm is broken...

  • Just a quick video update, my Olympus 9-18mm f/4-5.6 lens is experiencing some problems. The lens failed to focus from between 14 to 18mm, and it will show Lens Error notification on my cameras. There are people experiencing the same problem and from what I found in the internet, the cause of the problem is the broken ribbon cable inside the lens.
    I am sad because the Olympus 9-18mm is one of my favorite wide angle lens because of its small size and good image quality. It is still functional but only up to 14mm.

    Same for mine. It's now a 9-13mm 🙂 but I have other lenses for 14mm and up so I can live with that for the moment

    The 9-18 was reviewed by Optical Limits and Imaging-Resource in mid-2010, so it has been on the market (without update) for 13years! If you buy one used/second-hand there is no way of telling year of manufacture, so beware. If you like really it, buy a new one. Good value for money.

      It's very difficult to get one here where I live, the lens' used price climbed up pretty steeply and there's no new one to be found. Maybe I will consider buying another one if I can find a good price on it.

      @@Gary_W it is the only really Compact Wide zoom lens available for MFT. The other options are primes or are to big. I work professionally with architecture and real estate and I own the Oly 7-14 (my workhorse), 8-25 (for travel and video), 9-18 (just bought it), Leica 9mm (the only weather sealed Prime wide angle) and Laowa 6mm (the wider option). And… the Oly 9mm f8 bodycap…😬 I just love all of them but I’m thinking in sell the 8-25mm, because I don’t use it often, because is to big. The 9-18 is much more travel friendly.

      @@TITAOSTEIN that is true, the other options are bigger and pricier as well, except the Laowa 7.5mm f2, but the Laowa is slightly heavier than the 9-18mm.

    Same thing happened to mine 4 years ago, unacceptable for such an expensive lens. Olympus m43 lenses in general have very bad durability... I have had several Olympus lenses and most of them had problems (and I am very careful with the lenses). The 12-40mm PRO lens began developing loud noises when autofocusing. The Oly 12-50 lens began giving lens errors and autofocus errors. Not only this but my OMD EM1 camera's shutter froze up and the camera no longer works... and it is not worth the money to get the shutter replaced. Oly 75-300 and 40-150 (non pro) pumpers gather dust inside the lens elements easily. Only the Oly 60mm macro held up and was amazing. I am done with Olympus' poor reliability and poor build quality. I'm glad I switched to full frame Nikon Z and Sony E now, I only buy lenses that are very durable (and bonus: many are cheaper than m43 lenses and produce better results because on full frame, the pixels are larger so not only is dynamic range improved, the grinding of the lens elements does not need to be as precise, resulting in better apparent resolution). I will say I did have a few Panasonic lenses for m43 and they seemed to be better quality. In my opinion, lenses should last a lifetime if stored correctly and the user is careful with them. Having lenses fail after a few years is unacceptable. They are a huge investment. Pro lenses from Sigma, Tamron, and Sony (and Laowa, Mitakon, Voigtlander) are proving to be durable and reliable on FF.

    Bad luck, this same thing has just happened to my lens, however the 9-18 doesn't have a problem, in the camera repair world the ribbon cable is called the FPC (focus point control) and is the most common thing to fail in any lens, it gets folded every time the lens is zoomed and just like laptop screen ribbon cables it will break eventually no matter how good the lens, my brother has just had one replaced in a full size DSLR telephoto, so my advice, if you like the lens and can't find someone who can get it fixed, just buy a new one and it will last another ten years, mine will go to WEX photo video in the UK for a new FPC when I get back from my holiday, the repair is still cheaper than a new lens

    • @Gary_W

    We also have a 12 and 17 within the range and bought a 9mm Pana 1.7 now. Never look back towards the 9-18. The 9 plus 12 combo are great for wide angle shots.

      That's very unfortunate, I am not planning to rebuy the 9-18mm, but I kind of miss that zoom flexibility on a smaller lens. My Panasonic Leica 8-18mm now does the job really well but it's big and not as portable as the Olympus 9-18mm, so I don't bring it out as often as the Oly 9-18mm.

    • @TITAOSTEIN
      @TITAOSTEIN Год назад

      The small 9-18mm is wonderful. But I think that we have better better options now days (but not with this flexibility vs size). Right now I’m using the LUMIX 9mm f1.7 (also weather sealed) and the Laowa 6mm f2. They are fantastic. But just to let you know that OM system is selling the 9-18mm right now (April 2023) for 349€ new. Almost 50% less than the normal price.
