Stussy started "streetwear"? For real Bro? You never heard of Karl Kani or Cross Colors? Streetwear was first called "urbanwear" remember, its not just stuff that migrated over... Kani and Cross Colors started in 1989 as urbanwear brands.. not a skate or surf brand that was later adopted into streetwear.. I dunno man.. "Streetwear" didn't even exist in 1989. I was there... LOL
Hey bud, you still got that keychain I gave you? Love your channel. ✌️
I would love to see you do the rise and fall of JNCO jeans
with the white vanssss?????
can we get a Up To Speeed on the Subaru Legacy
It's insane that I have zero interest in street wear, sneakers or clothes in general but every one of these videos is completely engrossing. James' passion is infectious.
We did it with cars now we’re gonna do it with everything else guys like
I’m not so hipsterish myself.. but JAMES GETS THE AUDIENCE EVERYTIME !!
Yeah I am not interested in clothing stuff but when this legend tells it in this way I get interested in it.
I don't even SEE any of these clothes in my country, but I stay for the tale. They're great!
Same dude
22:05 Your empathy for a situation you’ve never been in is truly astounding.
Stussy helped me think I was cool when I was a goofy 11 years old. Now, I know I’m cool even IF my kids think I’m a goofy 45 year old.
Saaaame here dude. I had 2 Stussy shits back in 97' in elementary school and thought I was SOO cool
Word. I read it as “Antsy” for a good while being in third grade
Your kids are dorks lol they aren't that cool, they still live with their mom lol I punk my nephew with "you still live with your parents... nerd" and he's like I'm only ten years old. And I'm like whatever nerd
@@kingjellybean9795 Perfect! 😂
This is the only person on RUclips where I make it a point to watch each video as soon as I notice it drops. Even if it just runs in the background so I can actually watch it later, I want to pump the performance and engagement up.
Is it me or is James looking clean and healthy🔥
I am both clean and healthy
@@SpeeedCo You should do a video about how you got so clean and healthy. Give me a mention in the credits though (Andy Wood Ruff) - it's a surefire winner.
I thought he looks thin and cancer/aids stricken..
You're just now noticing???
No more Carls Jr & In & Out.
I’m so happy that James left Donut and started Speeed. It’s a win-win for us and James. He gets to talk about his fave things and we get to know about Stussy, Carrhart and more
The episode I've been waiting for.
Spent all my teen years (80s/90s) in Champaign-Urbana IL, skateboarding, reading Thrasher and dreaming about the West Coast. This new kid came to my middle school. He had a west coast vibe but i think he was from one of the Carolinas. He had tons of Maui & Sons and gave me some shorts and shirts that didn't fit him anymore. This really changed my life. Having very little money, I made bootleg Vans (based off Payless shoes, i stitched my own Vans label to sew in) and Stussy shirts (acrylic and sharpie, wasn't as convincing but the shirts were damaged from skating). Nobody ever questioned if they were real. 12 y.o. and coming into my own and discovering myself through (real & homemade) clothes. Thanks for doing this James. Honestly some people wouldn't know the history of current streetwear if it wasn't for videos like yours.
James has proven that the format for Up to Speed can work with anything. I knew nothing about Stussy until 30 minutes ago. The fact that we can now have Up to Speed on anything from Vans, to Mooneyes, to KFC is astounding. Keep it up, James. Can’t wait to learn about something new in a few weeks
My man reaching over a million subs this quickly is one of the most deserved things I’ve seen. Leaving Donut was a risk, and would’ve been painful to see him fall off. Luckily, he’s the goat and that would never happen
21:40 is pure gold 😂 proud of you for doing right by you James!
The worst part about stussy being so entrenched in the mainstream now, is how expensive it is.
it's like 50$ for a tee which isn't that bad
Is it back then? I felt so damn cool with a vinyl die cut stussy logo on my trapper keeper in 1991
This comment is literally in every video about every subject. Lol.
@SpeeedCo i mean on a seperate note as I continue watching, learning all the history of it and hearing you explain it. Feels way more worth to pay for it.
@bobi6091 it's just me coping with how everything has gone up in price and wishing it hadn't. Part of getting old.
I think Snap-On would be a cool video.
Oh solid idea!
I could listen to James read my budget every month and I’d still find it entertaining.
You are the best storyteller on RUclips right now
Hellll yeah, literally just wrapped up the RS deep dive after watching over lunch the past 2 weeks, apparently right on time!
They all deserve way more views than they’re getting! Every one is so well done! I missed this format for so long, I’m so happy James is back at it!
I'm here for this new James
It's so great to see him spread those bad ass beautiful wings and get to be himself
Dawww
“Like, like Stussy… now he parties in Hawaii - selling hats and shirts damnit Sean”
21:40 - 100% TOTALLY NOT SARCASM rant starts 😂 (Don't ever change James!!!)
I think it flew over peoples heads
I worked for a surf/skate/snowboarding shop in the 1980's and we sold more Stussy than any other shop in NorCal. In a world of surf and skate gear, Stussy stuck out as something different and super cool as a result. That's why we wore Stussy gear, it transcended the Powell Peralta/Vision/O'Neill/Rip Curl gear, and was something completely new and legit in the punk/surf/skate scene. Every cool skater in the North SF Bay wanted Stussy in the late 1980's.
This is the first youtuber I've followed from one channel to another, but I now can claim day one status-MOPOWABABY
8:45 Hit me at my heart because I'm a 35 year old dad watching these with my 10 year old son soon to be 11 son
10:53 Will we ever get a "Everything you need to know about: James's dad"???
Paganigaming is lurking somewhere, just wait
You’re the goat I like the 30 minute videos better than the hour long ones probably easier for you to make and edit. Love you lots!!
Converse "Chuck Taylors" All-stars, americas shoe icon; timeless; stylish; *chefs kiss*.
You can’t know how much joy it brings me that you’re pronouncing it correctly 😂. I have seen a bunch of influencers videos all getting it horribly wrong.
The real ones know
I wish I had the words to explain WHY the information gleaned from these videos stick... Like, I will remember 40%+ of this information to regurgitate at the bar tonight, which is WAY more than a classroom setting provides. Awesome stuff man!
This video absolutely slapped! I can't help but feel moved by the end of it. I go from not knowing or caring about something to being completely moved by the end of the video. Well done!
I am so happy for you guys and this channel. Every video has had me start to finish and wishing they were longer. Keep up this phenomenal work.
Talking about cool stuff and teaching others about it, that’s everyone’s ideal job, I’m so happy for you man looks like you finally got up to speed with your dreams
All Speeed videos so far were on topics that interest me, but I'm too lazy to do the research myself. So thanks guys for doing this, love the videos.
Glad to help!
Adding deep knowledge to nostalgia is so dope! I feel what you're doing on this channel so deeply, and appreciate the hell out of you, James. You should coin a term for that unique feeling you get when you learn facts and substance to make a nice little foundation for your nostalgia feels.
I love the way you always choose a really good quote. It makes a good impact at the end of each video. 30:49
I love the way you always choose a really good quote. It makes a good impact at the end of each video. 30:49
Man, i could watch a video of James edited by Jesse tell me everything I need to know about anything. KitchenAid, La-Z-Boy chairs, the Bechdel test... Vibes are great, keep up the good work you two.
Great to see you back at it James! Loving the new channel
Thank you for hanging in there to make videos! You’re doing fine.
JAMES IS BACK YALL! Mo powah to YOU babaeeyyyy
From London you forgot Goldie, graffiti artist, drum & bass pioneer and founder of Metalheadz. He's in the clip.
Another great one James, really wanna give you guys props on the production quality and content. Awesome stuff, truly. Proud to be a member of this community and happy to keep watching you guys make more!
mid-90s Stussy pop-up sales in Southern California kept it so cool. We would get wind of a sale, show up early, and get in line for retro gear and stuff sold in other countries.
Love you, bro! Keep on keeping on. You're the inspiration to so many others out there with what you did and what you're doing. You've made more than a brand yourself. You've made a following. Not to any material object, but to the person that you are. And maybe you don't realize how many appreciate you for it, but you do inspire so many of us. ❤
Babe wake up, new SPEEED video just dropped 😎
I'll be honest i have never heard of this brand, but I love this origin story. Guy saw a need in the market and became a brand icon because he was driven to fulfill it.
You talkin about me?
I’m loving these various videos outside of the car world! Keep it up dude, your killing these mini docs.
We love YOU bud ! James always captivating the audience no matter the subject. Solid EVERY F’n TIME ! 🙌
I'm the least fashionable man in the world, I just buy what's cheap. I have genuinely never heard of this brand yet somehow I was still enthralled by this video. Great work as always.
Wearing Stüssy helped me meet my best friend in 4th grade. Great video James love all the new content start to finish. Best youtube channel out right now❤️
19 seconds is wild
That's what she said
These documentary series are too good. Just for preservation alone, but the passion and authenticity is unrivaled. I will ALWAYS be a Pumphrey fan. 🤘
I kept shrinking the full screen view to thumbs up, but i allready had done it at the very beginning.
I appreciate Stussy's effort to stop street vandalism, a good musician knows when its their turn and doesnt force their art
I am not a fashion guy, but James' storytelling skills are so awesome he could make a 12 hour video reading the phone book and I'd watch it.
It is so good to see Big Time and Speeed both reach over a million, really shows we love the hosts 😂😂
22:00 😉😂 You definitely won't know. lol
Nothing comes to mind 👀…
DON'T STRIVE FOR SHORTER TIMES BETWEEN VIDEOS PLEASE!!! These are GOING HARD.
love the video and that outro with the brand quote was so well built up to and it hit
31:07
Me: QUALITY BEFORE QUANTITY.
Also me leaning behind James whispering: “….Are you done yet…?”
I've never cared much about clothing brands, but James just has a way of talking about anything that makes me interested!
Digging the new content bro, glad to see you back doing what you enjoy and spreading knowledge to the masses. Keep up the good work homie, the fam has your back.
Big love from Scotland ❤️
IDK WHY JAMES DOESNT HAVE MORE SUBS. COME ON GUYS
And views
Let’s go bud. Keep killing it with the 90s era topics. Thank you all.
Great video topics so far! Im a car guy and didnt know clothing brand "up to speeed" could be so interesting. You're on the verge of greatness and this time its gonna be your own brand.
Been watching since the days of science garage, up to speed, 4586 drift build, old donut never failed to entertain me. Glad to have a piece of my teenage years back with a twist on topics I am very into as well (other than cars), thank you James 🎉.
James you’re looking good man! Slimed up and looks like healthy slim not depressed slim lol. So hype to see you back and speaking on topics that I relate to!
I’m really glad you’re passionate about videos because it shows, keep it up!!
In the early 90s, Stüssy was here in Germany in every skateshop and my absolute favorite brand.
Unfortunately, the clothes are hardly available here today.
This reminds me of the 80s and 90s craze for Town & country surf shop. For some reason they no longer sell Da Boys merch, which were very popular characters back in the day. They even had two video games for the NES!
I SWEAR EVERY EPISODE OF THE CHANNEL HITS(IN ALL CAPS)❤❤
Man, ill watch this for james, but i really would like for more vehicle history instead
These jokes about James‘s dad are fucking killing it 😂😂 11:24
3 things.
I had some Stussy gear in middle school / junior high which was handed down to me. Had zero clue in the 90's the brand had such a legacy
That was one of the best Ridge wallet ad reads I've seen to date 👍
The 4th wall break into business takeovers was hilarious
Loving all these deep dives - i dont have any suggestions for content, just enjoy getting surprised by history I didnt know that I needed to know.
I wore Stussy hats every day in the late 80s and early 90s and wear Stussy t-shirts four or five days a week now. Over 30 years, that's some staying power.
You're a big inspiration for how I am as a person and what I want to do with my life, James. Keep being awesome❤
Love the videos James! I don't mind the time it takes between them. They are so well made and enjoyable. You're looking like you're having a great time doing your own thing. Keep it up.
I've been looking forward to this one ever since the announcement! I remember Stussy being popular when I was younger and being drawn to it based on the logo alone! So awesome to find out the history of it. Keep up the awesome work! I can't wait to see more!
I don't even know what this channel is about anymore but maybe this is why I like it a lot, let's go
This video totally took me back to my early childhood and the skate/surf culture here in Orange County... thank you for making this video.
I feel like James would make a great journalist/ interviewer!
Podcast coming soon
21:30 is EVERYTHING. Good on you James!!!
Keep it going, James! I am really enjoying the content. The time between videos irritates the consumption Beast within, but the heart in these videos satiated its anger. The longer period between the videos lends an air of exclusivity to the channel. I would rather you take 2 weeks to create a truly great video instead of mass producing content every day that just feels like empty calories. Don't apologize to us. Just keep working hard and let your passion fuel your creativity.
Up to speed is what drew me to watch [Pastry Channel] and I’ve missed it for a long time. Thanks for scratching that itch again, James.
I was rocking Mossimo with the cut-off chinos in High School in 2001 because I was poor and I would turn my cheep dickies pants I had from winter into shorts for the summer in CA... Had no idea being poor was so fashionable.
Kids in my high school who wore STUSSY were mocked hard because being one of the few wealthy kids in a poor high school made you an outsider.
When I got to OC as a kid in the early 80s, it was Stussy and Canvas by Katin that took over the shoreline from Seal to CdM. Shout out to Harbour Surfboards in Seal. I would go home to NY and nobody wore it in the city.
James your story telling really is phenomenal. It's so funny when you got to the guy wanting to buy the shorts.
I FEEL SO VALIDATED HEARING JAMES SAY LEGITERALLY
My company moved into the old stussy warehouse in Irvine. When we moved in I was hoping to come up on some cool merch left behind but they left it completely empty when they left lol
Speaking of surf and skate, Van's has a huge history in both. And they dabble in high-end streetwear with (now defunct) Vault by Vans, and OTW. It's been covered many times before, but it would make for a great vid
INCREDIBLE VIDEO. I grew up with Stussy here in South Africa. So awesome to finally see the History. Cheers.
Can you do a deep dive on Yamaha? How do you sell pianos and jetskis as a company??
I see Kentucky Cobra i click. Don't mind that the videos aren't coming out at a super fast pace because i know when the next one drops I'll learn all about something i likely never have much thought about before. Love that after his experience at that other channel he knows to stay independent and will build something that is truly his. Keep up the good work my dude and you'll keep on growing!
love the "subtle" jab at the money men trying to ruin a certain passion project of a few boys we all love.
I love seeing the detail in the title screen! Like, the video ingredients and all
This is so coool. My brother still has the black design of a Tshirt he purchased around the year 2001. Its just hanging in his cupboard.
they still make some of my favorite skate vidoes. if you know who gifted hater is, he is a dude heavily invested in skateboarding culture. He and many others love what that crew does. they may not be the best but Jesse Alba, Hugo Bosserup, and many others make the skate side of that brand truly special.
What's wild is I never even heard of this brand nor do I care for streetwear trends but here I am watching this video
Love these videos! You guys should start adding different items from the videos you made to the backdrop/background. Example like Carhartt Beanie Hat, Porsche GT3RS Model Car, Stussy Baseball Cap. Would be sick!!
That's GENIUS like a record of what's been done. Then if I wanted to binge SPEEED after 4 years I could watch the wall grow
Doesn’t matter the subject, James makes it interesting as heck.
I’m here for this.
you give me a special hit of dopamine with every video you make that i can’t replicate anywhere else
Dude, the fact that you can take ANY subject and turn it into such a captivating tale is phenomenal. You're like the millennial's mark twain, keep rocking that shit dude 🤙
Ideas for an episode: 686 / Mike West. LA. Snow. Legend.
This is why the concepts of brands were always weird to me. Especially with stussy where it’s his name, but it’s not been him approving or putting out designs for a long time. I remember stussy in the mid to late 2000s where it was in every zumiez and pacsun. Crazy to see how it’s morphed for new generation.
