- Here's the original version of this great song. Released on "Merle Haggard Presents His 30th Album" in 1974. I was watching the You Tube Skynyrd version, reading all of the commentary. This will clear up any question as to who "Roy" is (the great Roy Nichols, of course!). It amazes me that even in the Skynyrd box set they identify "sounds like Roy" from the Skynyrd version as pertaining to Roy Clark! I think this ranks with "Workin' Man Blues" as the Strangers' best performance. Listen to the bass line (someone named Johnny Meeks!), and Roy and Norman Hamlet's great solos (copied pretty closely by Skynyrd). I think Skynyrds' version is possibly the best-ever Hag cover, but it's one thing to do a great cover - it's another thing to create it in the first place! Enjoy...

Ronnie and the Skynyrd boys recorded this song to honor Merle. And I'm glad they did.
I'll die not being able to play that solo but I'll hear it as I go.
My favorite guitar solo of all time.
Probably Roy's finest solo.
Hot Damn, Roy going old-school
First time I heard this song was the Skynyrd version.
Roy didn't let too much of his 20 secs. go to waste, did he?!
one of my faves !!!
Here here. The solo at 0:59 is fire.
RIP Merle Ronald Haggard April 6,1937-April 6,2016
Yes, I know. That's what I was saying in my comments. I've seen the Roy Clark comment before, and was particularly annoyed when the liner notes of the Skynyrd box referred to Roy Clark. One of Roy Nichols greatest recorded solos, and one of the Strangers' best performances.
of players stayed with him!!
I hated this song the first time I heard it..not sure why..but I came around..it's Awesome ;)
Merle’s so much better a than anyone who tries this song. I appreciate their honoring him, but no one can match this !!!!
Respectfully Skynyrd took this to another level
ACTUALLY when Ronnie said "sounds like roy" he was referring to Roy Nichols- the Hag's right hand guitar man for years. either way, he was paying homage to masters of the guitar
Merle is like the Ozzy of country. He always has the hottest players in his band. Roy AND Redd??? Are you kidding me???!
My life from 93 to 2002
Damn call the fire department there is a huge blaze from 59 to 1:19 of this song!!
Roy Nicholas is a respected picker from way back. I knew what Ronnie meant from the get go.
Not sure but I figure the new guitar player Steve Gaines influenced doing that song. He could actually play that style.
Gaines was a monster picker! Poor guy.
In fact the whole LP is killer and features Steve’s picking a lot.
He was already doing I know a Little before he joined Skynyrd.
They covered or honored a lot of artists. More to honor them than that they needed a song like some other artists.
Man, I wish they’d let Roy loose to take 4 whole choruses for his solo
Roy is good but Haggard aint no slouch either.
