Remember that during this tour probably the next Papa will be presented, and they might want to do that during the whole tour. And ain't it more fun NOT to know what happens during the actual concert than seeing it on social media first?
But what do I know I just want to see and hear the show and not a lot of mobiles in the way of the view.

I love watching phone shows on YT. Concerts are too damn expensive and most of the time I can get a more immersive and comfortable experience from a good angle on a YT video than if I were to get $200 nosebleed tickets to a TOOL show. Whether it's that case or the cases of super rare shows, tours with few dates or one-night special shows that are just too far or too expensive to attend, I support it.
Someone here in the comments said maybe a good solution would be for bands to have a no-phone policy and have a designated person record the show (not necessarily fancy quality or pro-shot) and sell that. If I remember correctly, KISS used to do this, but it was only audio. They made a recording of that night's show (I believe it was soundboard mix) available for purchase at the merch booth. I don't know how long they did that, but I do remember seeing that back in the mid 90s. Not an entirely bad solution.
It's the simple and very common solution of "welp, it's gonna happen anyway so might as well control it and benefit from it"

@ I’m absolutely for moving into a no phone direction for shows. It would be at least nice if Apple Watches were not excluded for people who would want to at least keep tabs on these kinds of things. It’s stupid to look back on how it was then, because we are not in that time. As crappy as it is most things we depend on come from our devices and while I think it’s a great thing for them to be stored away and having a good time at a show, complete smart device lockup isn’t a good direction

Great comment, I love Ghost and I never record any videos or take pictures during concerts because I enjoy the moment. However, I recently got a baby and she would be around 6-7 months by the time Ghost plays in Germany. When I saw the news we contacted my parents-in-law that happily agree to babysit so today when I saw the no phone policy I decided not to purchase the tickets. This is my personal situation and I totally take ownership for it, being a first time mom has a bunch of challenges and fears and I wouldn't feel confortable if my phone wasn't available for me just in case of any emergency. Also with "this security bag" (at least this is what Ticketmaster policy in Germany says) that they would put the phone inside, I also started to wonder how long would it take me to take my phone out of the security case/bag. So I understand why the Band is doing this, but for me this time is a no. Once the baby is older I will take her with me to the show

1: it is so annoying when the "sheep" are holding a brick that shines, and you can't see the show, if you stand behind them.
2: years before, you could only see hands in the air! that shows the excitement, and joy of the people
3: PROBABLY, the "sheep" holding the shiny objects are just tryna make a "TicTac" video, or to show off where they were.
4: IMAGINE the artists' POV. You step on stage, and you see little BOXES, instead of faces. Inhuman experience. Think about it. Just a little!
You don't go to the Theatre with a camera right? Same thing. FINALLY an author that says NOOPE to the stupidity of the masses!
Anyways, the people who make the show, can decide what they allow, on a concert. It is their rightous right.

Thought I would add my two cents as a woman who often goes to gigs alone, I rely on it for my safety when at gigs so it is important for me to know what's going on, if I need to leave early because my train may be cancelled and I need to leave to get home a different way or be stranded somewhere overnight, that can be dangerous. But the main reason I would be worried is that the gig isn't just two hours, you're in the venue for a long time and when alone that can get pretty boring just standing there staring in to space with nothing to do or look at, I think I would get some weird reactions if I took out a book in the middle of the crowd! I often put in some earbuds and watch RUclips between sets or while waiting, I think not being able to do that would alone would put me off as a solo gig goer. For those who may comment that I should talk to others, lets face it, most people do not want a randomer pestering them for longer than a quick chat while at a gig.

    • @magical571

" For those who may comment that I should talk to others, lets face it, most people do not want a randomer pestering them for longer than a quick chat while at a gig."
You don't even need to justify yourself. in your case, it seems like you may be open to the idea of talking to those people, but for many with other types of personalities and mental health issues, it is good that we do not live in the rock ages, and that they can, for example, bring their headphones until the concert actually starts.
And as a woman too, yeah, being stranded there alone with no contact isn0t a nice prospect. and to the people being like "well in the rock ages", yeah, and i don't want to be murdered and dispossed of in vlad tepes backyard like in the rock ages either lol. and the modern ages, those with bad intentions won't give me a headstart home if they notice i'm a little disconected.

Maynard had a really good response to those who felt too vulnerable without their phone at a concert, and I'm quoting him here. "If I see your phone out, I'll kick you in the vagina. And if you do not have a vagina, we'll have our techs install one for you, then I'll kick you in it. Put them away, enjoy the show, we're going on an adventure together."
I'm all for it, phones distract from actually enjoying the show, otherwise one might as well just sit at home and watch someone else's recording on YT.

I get not wanting a bunch of people just recording the whole concert but the locking them up is a bit extreme in my opinion. I respect the band‘s right to enforce their new policy. That said, I think I’m done with GHOST concerts and merch purchases if they go this route. I still will always love GHOST, but I think they’ve lost me as far as me investing in them is concerned.

Conceptually I get being upset with it. Practically, people brought it on themselves and I hope more bands get into this. I saw Babymetal live and the crowd was almost still. Nobody was there to enjoy the show, enjoy the music, dance, etc - Almost the entire crowd was still for an hour with their phones up recording or live streaming, there were two people I noticed double fisting phones. Since that I really stopped going to as many rock shows. I'm 6'4 so luckily I can kinda adjust around people's bullshit but it really takes away from the fun for me when 70% of the crowd paid $X just to live stream a concert for internet points.
"So what if people want to watch a show through their phone screen? Let people have their fun" What about the people behind them who also paid 100 some bucks who DON'T want to watch a live concert through someone else's 13 inch screen? Why does your need for internet clout supercede their desire to actually enjoy a show they paid for?

I'm a big Ghost fan, and I'm not particularly a fan of the no-phone rule. But they are:
    - about to reveal a new Papa Emeritus
    - probably a new album
    - and I wouldn't be shocked if a 2nd movie is already in early--production from how popular Rite Here Rite Now was.
I think this tour is either going to sneak in the songs of the new album at various shows, or they're doing another movie, or both. This era of Ghost is so based in the web series and I really think the lore has something to do with the phone policy.

If I could go back I'd have recorded my favorite concerts. As is I remember the details only vaguely and have nothing to show to other people aside from saying "it was so cool". So the incident barely exists anymore in my own mind and doesn't exist at all in anyone else's mind. A video would preserve some of it for a lot longer.
Professional recording is always best though and if I knew a show was going to be recorded and release later on disc then I wouldn't bother filming anything myself.

When I saw Judas Priest, everyone in front of me wanted to film Rob Halford entering the stage on his bike, and I could barely see what was happening. The same happened when I saw Batushka, if you're in the back at one of their concerts, you just can't see the band properly because of the wall of phones that forms.
