as a person with visual impairment, (Far Sighted can't see anything within 5') I would like to see Garmin utilize the Bluetooth feature by allowing the cyclist to pair the Garmin 1030 with a Bluetooth speaker like the JBL Charge. That way the $600 computer could call out turn by turn navigation.. It would also improve the safety of the cyclist because they wouldn't have to look away from the road to know when to turn.. THAT is just a simple solution from a visually impair rider. And it would improve everyone's cycling (navigation) experience.. Garmin Design Team does have coders..Don't they..? And most with visual impairment that still ride need the largest (1030 3.5" display) without all the fitness features.. ie: the Explore 2 enlarged would be a great addition.. And i think that many who only want easy to see navigation would appreciate not having to spend $600..

Also a new processor which is supposed to be 2x faster, I had a 530 for a short while before getting a 1030 and the difference in performance is pretty noticeable. The 1030+ is now using same processor as 530/830

There’s now a streamlined setup process that’ll migrate your old Edge settings and sensors (even from an Edge 1000), plus you’ve now (finally) got free global detailed maps for anywhere you go (except Asia). And the LiveTrack now will actually show your route to the friends/family you share it with. Plus lots of minor changes like re-routing quick-select options when you go off-course - according to DC Rainmaker

What are you waiting for, did I take a Garmin 830 or 1030 Plus, I use bicycles for long exercises and I want to display the exercise well in the Garmin screen, what do you say to my friend?

Nice review. Processor is als better and faster and touchscreen reacts much better on the 1030 plus than on the 1030.

I am tempted by the Roam. Difficult to justify buying another GPS when I have three already though...

Sportive Cyclist I purchased the Wahoo Roam first. I was disappointed with it shortly after I started using it. The first thing I noticed was the average speed . After some of my rides the average speed recorded 34 miles an hour. Note: I doubt I’ll ever have that average at my age. Note: I was using the Wahoo sensor, and it was calibrated.
Some other dislikes that I encountered are below.
      1. Buttons are difficult to press.
      2. Difficult to navigate within the GPS map using buttons - arrow concept. A very slow process compared to the Edge 1030 Plus touch screen.
      3. Can not control brightness. - Only “Auto” is available. - Terrible when adjusting settings indoors.
      4. NO street names on the available maps. VERY disappointed over the lack of this feature.
      5. Limited “on board” memory. In the U.S., if you want to use the Roam in another State, you will probably have to delete the current State due to the lack of memory. - It is terrible.
      6. The Roam display looks like the quality of a digital pocket game from the 1990s.
These are the reasons why I replaced, and purchased the Garmin Edge 1030 Plus. The touch screen on the Plus is as good as an iPad. Also, you can adjust the sensitivity levels. The battery life is great, larger display and functions like a smart phone. Regarding memory, all maps in the U.S. are pre-installed. 32 gig of memory on the 1030 Plus. There is no comparison, other than the price.
If the 1030 Plus is too expensive, there is the Garmin Edge 830 for only $20 more than the Roam. It is pretty much the same as the 1030 Plus, but slightly smaller.
I have not had any crashes or lost data using my road bike (Approx. Four weeks of usage everyday). I am very pleased with the Garmin Edge 1030 Plus.

Dane801962 the average speed thing is a bit strange. Was it ok with just gps and no sensor? And the memory thing I don't understand I've got all of Europe loaded on my roam no problem at all! The other things you mention are some of the things I like about the roam no accidental button pushes and an un fussy screen with just the information you need but that's all just a matter of personal preference I guess. I found the touch screen on the garmin a frustrating nightmare especially with sweaty hands or rain on the screen!

Badgers Eyebrow you are correct regarding preference. I found It more difficult to press the buttons on the Roam, because they were too stiff while riding. I had to press them just right (centered). I have heard a lot of complaints regarding the older Edge touch screens such as the 520, but the 1030 Plus has been improved. Based upon my experience with the 1030 Plus, the touch screen is great, especially with wet/sweaty fingers. Also, the sensitivity is adjustable.
I should add, the Roam is better regarding anti-glare. The 1030 Plus does have glare, but the brighter display does help.

Nice video, particularly the old casquette section. I’m still using the 510 to good effect.

Good man Paul. In making this video I realised I have no idea where my 510 is. I had to use a clip from an old video. I think it must have gone to the Great Garmin Graveyard ...

Great video. Question - I only have a Chromebook and Garmin Express won't work on it. What features do I lose by not being able to plug it in to an actual computer?

    • @Sportivecyclist
      @Sportivecyclist  4 года назад +1

Hi Tod - thanks for your comment and the kind words. Any other week, you would say you lose nothing by being unable to attach a Garmin bike computer to your computer, and generally that's the way things are going (or have gone). All the syncing/uploading of data takes place wirelessly, either using Bluetooth or wifi to sync with the Garmin Connect app. However, Garmin was held to ransom over recent weeks by hackers, which meant that the uploading route via syncing with the app wasn't available. People had to go back to using a USB cable. This was something of a freak occurrence though. Going forward it'll be back to wirelessly syncing. All of which is to say you don't lose anything material other than a backup in the case of Garmin being hacked (I'm sure if you were desperate to upload in this circumstance, you could find a computer to attach to).
