"Gott erhalte, Gott beschütze" or the "Österreichische Kaiserhymne" was the National Anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The hymn was originally "Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" and written as a personal anthem to Emperor Francis II of the Holy Roman Empire, and later of the Austrian Empire. The lyrics were written by Lorenz Leopold Haschka and the melody by Joseph Haydn in 1797. In 1854, the anthem got new lyrics, which were used until the end of the Empire in 1918. The anthem has the same melody as the German national anthem "Deutschlandlied", written in 1841.
DEUTSCH: Die Österreichischen Kaiserhymnen, auch Volkshymnen genannt, waren ab 1797 Hymnen des Hauses Österreich und von 1826 bis 1918 die offiziellen Kaiserhymnen des Kaisertums Österreich, das seit 1867 die Länder der ungarischen Krone nicht mehr umfasste (Österreich-Ungarn). Die Hymnen lauteten stets auf die vom österreichischen Komponisten Joseph Haydn im Auftrag von Kaiser Franz II. komponierte Melodie. In der Habsburgermonarchie gab es keine National- oder Landeshymnen einzelner Kronländer. Vielmehr wurde der Text der Kaiserhymne dem jeweils amtierenden Kaiser gewidmet, so dass sich der Text bei jedem Thronwechsel änderte. Auf die Melodie der früheren österreichischen Kaiserhymne wird auch das 1841 von August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben gedichtete Lied der Deutschen gesungen, dessen dritte Strophe heute die deutsche Nationalhymne ist.

Az első szövegváltozat Lorenz Leopold Haschka (1749-1827) 1791-es szerzeménye, a frissiben trónra lépett Ferenc császárt köszöntötte akkor még Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser kezdettel. Nyilvánosan először 1797-ben énekelték, zenéjét pedig igazi nagyság, maga Joseph Haydn komponálta nyugat-magyarországi horvát népdalmotívumok felhasználásával. Jelenleg Németország himnuszának ez a dallama.

Celui-ci s’étant prononcé en 1804 en plus François I, empereur héréditaire d’Autriche, l’hymne resta après son abdication de la couronne du Saint-Empire romain en 1806, à part quelques modifications du texte pour accommoder les deux premiers de ses trois successeurs sur le trône d’Autriche, l'hymne dynastique et impérial de la monarchie autrichienne impériale jusqu’en 1918. La désignation Gott! erhalte reprend les premiers mots, communs à toutes les versions du texte en dépit des modifications successives. En 1841, sur l’île d’Héligoland, à l’époque britannique, un certain Heinrich Hoffmann, natif de Fallersleben, renversa la technique d’origine en composant le Deutschlandlied, poème patriotique allemand dont le troisième couplet est l'actuel hymne national de la République fédérale d'Allemagne.
Context: 100 years ago, the Armistice of Villa Giusti was signed between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. This armistice led to the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and later Blessed Karl I and IV's abdication as Emperor on November 11, 1918. The abdication meant the end of 600 years of Habsburg rule of Austria.

Maybe this is not the right place, but I would like to thank the Hungarian Trucker who saved my life. The wind was force 10 and was traveling with a motorbike the 26 of October 1996 in Germany from Karlsruhe to the north. I had to travel behind him and he was always careful knowing that I was defending myself from the wind.

@@jindrichplantagenet1467 The problem was Emperor Franz Josef. He was old, ruled absolutist in a time full of changes, he was not a fan of industrialization and very conservative. A compromise with Bohemia, as it happened with Hungary, was rejected by him. His successor Charles I. was much more committed. He wanted to transform Austria into a federation and give freedom to all nationalities within a confederation. But by then it was already too late. It would have been a completely different scenario if Franz Josef had died earlier. However, it is not possible to say what kind of emperor Franz Ferdinand (who would then never have been shot in Sarajevo) would have become.

It is a great great pity that the Habsburg throne, the true and legitimate government and ruler of all Austria, Hungary, Czechia, Southern Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and all the lands of the great Austrian empire (or later Austro Hungarian Empire) is no longer.

When attending a Catholic Mass in Germany once with my mother, the choir sang the Tantum Ergo during benediction, using the music for Deutchland Uber Alles, as it perfectly fits the words.

Sorry guys. There is a mistake here. It’s never been the Hungarian anthem in the last thousand years... Hungary has had two anthems so far. One lasted 800 years, until 1848, and it is still being sung by catholics on special occasions ( Holy Mary, Our Blessed Mother ).
The anthem that is known as the Hungarian Anthem today, was written in 1823 by Ferenc Kölcsey ( poet ) and its music was composed by Ferenc Erkel ( musician ) in 1844.
The Hungarian Anthem ( we call it Hymnus ) was written, in the era of the Hungarian enlightment as an opposition against the aggressive teuton influence, because we simply did not want to sing about the austro-german superiority, as Hungary was a majority within the Austro-Hungarian Empire in terms of population and we were also fairly powerful politically. We are too proud to bow for an anthem like this, since we’ve got quite a bit of a cultural heritage that includes our folk music and unique language.
So we never sing anything like that unless we got very drunk and try to take the mickey out of the germans. Due to our thick accent they are usually unable to recognise a word of it.

The anthem was translated to Hungarian though (along with other major languages in the Empire).
Technically speaking, the song was an anthem of the Habsburg Monarchy, rather than the anthems of the Austrian or Hungarian nations.

That was the exact reason why Ferenc Erkel and Ferenc Kölcsey wrote the Hymnus, because they should have had to sing the anthem in german.
The story goes like that. The verse was already written (1822) in the 1840s. Ferenc Erkel’s two sons had a gathering at their school ( end of the academic year ). They had to sing this anthem in german. It had wound Mr Erkel up so much that he sat down at his piano and composed the tune for the Hymnus at once. He didn’t even eat or drink.
There is a lot of misinterpretation in the Austro-Hungarian history, so I’m not surprised at all that falsified stories circulating.
Whatever they say, we did not like the empire as it had a huge destructive effect on the Hungarian economy and politics. We waged a civil war against Austria in 1848/49.
One thing is certain, though. It’s never been our anthem.

Niederösterreich war eine Provinz und ist heute ein Bundesland. Die Melodie wurde von einem kroatischen Volkslied inspiriert, na und? Es wurde inspiriert nicht kopiert. Haydn hat den Song auf Grundlage der Melodie in Wien für den Kaiser komponiert, was in Niederösterreich lag, Kollege. Die Habsburger mit ihrem Stammland waren seit Jahrhunderten die Kaiser des HRR. Und nach dem Zerfall 1806 war es die Kaiserhymne des Kaisertums Österreich. Erst 1922 wurde es zur Deutschen Hymne. Was gibt es da nicht zu verstehen?
