- Today at Alf's Mustang Garage, we are back to rebuilding this 289 Ford small block Windsor. In this video we demonstrate how we prep our engine blocks for paint and then paint them. Special thanks @UncleTonysGarage for an outstand demonstration of how to prep and paint engine blocks.
The book I recommend you buy for your build. You will not get all the information there is to know from watching these videos. This book will help guide you through everything. www.npdlink.co...

We want your thoughts and comments below. What kind of project are you working on? What Mustang are you daily driving?

Great paint/prep work on the 289 Block.-
Thank you!
Good Morning Alex! I am amazed how good the block looks. I have been using rattle cans in the past. Did not know Eastwood paint was so much better and I love the NO primer application. Prep was another good part of this video, I learned new stuff today!!! Yaaaay. Hope everything is well at your beautiful shop and your making lots-o-money. Be safe and will look forward for another Video in the future. Blessings to you and yours from the Mustang capital of the World, Dearborn, Michigan. lol
Awesome! I'm glad we all learned something new. Some for me, appreciate it.
Great stuff, Alex! I appreciate the nuanced tips & tricks like heating the block with a torch. Will be following this series as I prep for my 289 build (among the 2,000 other things I need to complete on the car :D ).
Awesome! Thank you. I'll be watching for your video.
Looks great, now I know who to call when I need to paint my block! :)
Yes sir!
@@AlfsMustangGarage too late, you already installed it lol
Good job guys! I love that blue. I can't wait to get my engine done.
Thank you!
Oh, Alex? Did you catch Andy Kruse new 347 stroker he dropped in and fired up yesterday? It is beautiful and sounds amazing. Andy is a great guy with good sound professional info for us old weekend warriors also, like you Alex.
Yes! I follow Andy and was way excited to hear his come to life. He is a way cool dude. We just fired the engine on this fastback today here at our shop. Video will come soon.
Alex that looks amazing
Thank you!
The block is looking great.
Indeed it is
Good day! I need your help. I think your channel is the most informative around. I have a possible over heating 64.5 mustang. Need some ideas. Thx
Thank you. I would say start with basics. Confirm it's actually overheating. How is the thermostat? Is the water pump flowing? Do you need to add a fan shroud? I hope that helps.
Looks a good solid tough paint, good job.
Thank you!

Hi again Alex!!! Do you have any videos on upgrading my 67 Mustang fuse box to non-glass fuses and more places to add accessories? I upgraded Alt to 110 Amp single wire also spring of 2022. Thanks brother! Appreciate you.
I'm afraid I don't have any videos on that. I usually just run accessories off the accessorie post of the ignition switch.
Watched UncleTonysGarage video and then said "I wonder if Alf's has one." And here we are. Great video as always. I'm planning to paint my 66 Mustang I6 soon all over. I'm going with the POR-15 products cause they've always done well by me. You've got me actually looking forward to it. I'm removing the head, pan, and exhaust manifold so I can treat/paint individually but hoping to leave it otherwise intact. Mechanically the engine is in GREAT shape and runs fine. That sound like a plausible/good idea?
Oh ya if you're just looking to clean things up that's a good idea. Por-15 does make great products too. And ya uncle Tony has some very good content for sure.
@@AlfsMustangGarage Yeah she's just had about half the paint wear off after all the years. Trying to freshen it up and remove the bit of rust while I've got the head and exhaust off and it made total sense. Thanks for your vids, especially on the I6!
You're very welcome, good luck!
Thank you for another excellent video! Can you use the propane torch trick on an assembled engine without any concerns????
I don't see why not. Just as long as you keep the flame away from anything you obviously don't want to get hot. but the trick is it has to be bare metal.
What is the approximate cost of rebuilding a 289 v8, doing what you did to this one?
Disregard the question on paint? I went back and watched the 2 video thanks
No worries 👍
Is the Old Ford Blue the same as the factory Corporate Blue for the 289's?
No, the corporate blue is a bit darker. But depending on where you buy it from, you may get a few different shades. Generally speaking, corporate blue is darker.
Mr Alex
I am in the process of painting my 65 289. Planing on painting the block and heads black Not sure if I should leave the intake and water pump plain aluminum. What are your thoughts.
I think if you have an aluminum intake, keep it natural. The aluminum water pump kept natural would compliment the intake manifold.
Did u brush paint the oil pan and valve covers.
Yes but we kept the valve covers chrome.
I know this is not on topic but I'm wondering I have a 200 inline 6 from a 66 Mustang base coupe I put in a new oil pump but I'm still not getting oil to the top of the valves I primed it with a drill it's definitely moving oil it's just not getting up into the valves could you help me thank you love you Channel
Is your drill turning fast enough to get the oil pressure built up enough to get to the top?
I'm not sure, I got a opg in going to hook it up this wkend how much pressure would be enough? Oh ty for replying
I did have it running and it wasn't getting to top
If you connected a mechanical oil pressure gauge to the port where your oil sending unit is, I would expect to see 50 psi. If your not getting oil to the top with the engine running, I would advise to connect a mechanical gauge to see where the oil pressure is at. Could have a worn out pump.
I have a mechanical gauge will hook it up this wkend, I drive a truck only get to work on it 1 day a week,sad....
Remember to wear gloves and respirator when using Acetone.
