I have the CX90 PHEV and can clarify some things for anyone interested in the vehicle.
- It does come with a spare tire, it is located under the bin with the charger and tools
- It does 26 miles, but during winter conditions the range could be cut by half if it's too cold.
- The battery is never fully depleted, when it says there's no more EV only range it goes to Hybrid mode, so you're never gas only and it will still make about 26-27mpg, which is practically the same of a Grand Highlander.
- When the dash says '1mi' left but the SoC shows way more, it means the vehicle can't go fully EV for difference reason than only the charge level. It can be temperature, it can be the heater and plenty of other reasons.
- The PHEV is in fact quicker than the inline 6, doing a better 0-60 (under 6 seconds), however if you drive EV mode only or normal mode, it will fell slower to respond. It's not mentioned in the video but if you go sport mode, the vehicle will be always fast to respond and very quick.
- There's a speed limit on EV only mode, it's about 140kph or 87mph.
- If you can charge and the daily commute can be done in EVonly range, it's a great vehicle, I do this and my record so far is 2700km (1677mi) without having to refuel.
You are spot on. I have a CX-70 PHEV and every point you make is accurate. My record on a tank is 1,087 miles. I was pretty excited. My office is exactly 20 miles from home and I can make it there with approximately 8 miles left on the battery because my commute involves traffic so it recharges a bit through braking.
We have a CX9 and test drove the CX90. These cars a so well built. Good thing about the hybrid is that it’s the best of both worlds! Possible to get 50mpg when driving 40miles to work. When the battery runs out, so what.
Tommy is literally the Ned Flandres of automotive world.
Haven’t owned a PHEV but I feel like if you actually make a point to charging up the battery every chance you get then it would be good for both cases an EV and gas car.
Mary cracks me up. Good vid y’all ❤
Thats a great $42,000 SUV
this one is 59k
Some people don't get the joke.
@@BTC909hahahaah seriously
Explain it
To be honest i hate mid size 3rd row SUVs. About 90% of them have an unusable 3rd row that is trash for adults and teenagers. Not having the 3rd row is a huge plus for the CX-70. The cargo space is actually usable and convenient unlike the CX-90 and CX-9. I have owned 2 CX-9s.
Question for TFL or anyone…which costs less? Charging on level one for around 8 hours or charging on level 2 for around 2 hours as shown in video?
Went with the base 280hp turbo 6. No regrets. Plenty of power, noticeable improvement over the CX9. We use it primarily for long trips, often in the Rockies. Forced induction is the only way to go above 5000'. Fully optioned Premium Plus under $50k out the door. The Turbo S and PHEZ are a $7,000 option. Ridiculous. P.S. Get the artisan red metallic.
Mazda red is gorgeous!
I agree for a gas car at elevation (I live at 6500’) forced induction is a must. I’ve tried hybrids here and they’ve been lame (though Plug-ins have gotten marginally better). I’m now full EV and at high elevation it’s 1000% better than forced induction gas cars. Driving up Pikes Peak with zero performance loss is pretty incredible.
I think an important thing manufacturers don’t mention is on PHEV the fuel and oil refresh mode. In my jeep 4xe F&O refresh locks you out of electric fully for atleast a few days depending on how much you drive. It happens a ton in colder weather as well.
The phev in sport mode is actually fairly quick. Wish it had more range but it is a heavy vehicle.
10:52 Tommy delivered the vocals. He can do better then that. he was not warmed up. good job guys. Kase your turn.
i have a cx 90outside temperature affects the range, do the test again in the summer and compare
And he admitted it wasn’t fully charged
Most are getting north of 30 miles on electric only but cold weather aint going to help
I'll keep my 2015 cx5 thanks. Simple, light, quick. Cheap as chips to run.
Enjoying my cx-90 phev for 15 months so far.. i do wish for more than 26 miles EV ( temps above 50F), but under 30F, it drop to 13 miles. Plenty of power when ICE is boosted by battery.. my dealer service has been excellent , and while the Premium Plus is $60K - you dont buy, you lease and get an instant $7500 EV rebate. Then wait a month and you can buyout the lease at $52,500 or less...
I do love Mazda. My wife's CX-5 has been a great vehicle and for a crossover, it is fun to drive as well. Not a hybrid fan for long-term ownership but not too bad for their first US CX-70 hybrid attempt. At least the new CX-70 does have the dreaded piano black in the console area... The price like with most new vehicles now and especially hybrids is crazily too too high!
Having owned 2 PHEV's... a Honda Clarity and Wrangler 4xe, I can say the EV mode worked pretty well in the Honda and got me about 42 miles. In the Jeep I do good to get 20 miles. The drivetrains on both were very complicated and have a lot more points of failure. I went with a full EV on my following purchase, that sold me on EV's. Don't plan on buying another combustion car. Noticed the Mazda has the same charging cord that came with my Honda Clarity. That unit is made by Panasonic and will run on both 120/240v power. You will need to make a convertor cable to go from NEMA 6-20 to 5-20 to use it on 240v power. Charges at 12 amps on either voltage.
My rav4 prime has been nothing but perfect, but I do wish I had double the EV miles
Mazda put remote start behind a subscription. The new vehicles are literally worse than their vehicles from five years ago. Pass!
Watch the Savagegeese review. I wouldn't buy a 70 or a 90.
@@BTC909he hates everything he is NOT a good care reviewer to recommend other than for some grumpy laughs 😂
Have either of you driven these vehicles as you make sweeping statements about them? 😅😂😂😂
@ Have rented two CX-90s for work, have ~2 months of seat time. And I own an older Mazda. You know where to put your emojis, dork.
So did Kia. My old man has a 2020 Telluride and is annoyed it is not included past the 2 years they give you. Still love my 22 Mazda CX-9 Kuro. That remote start app was great when I had it. It was very convenient. However, it is a pet peeve of mine for sure having to pay beyond 2 years. 10 bucks a month to start a car remotely is ludacris. Those companies should never have strayed from the standard keyfob start!
On the CX-5 at least, the screen is a touch screen for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so the screen is capable, just not the Mazda built-in software.
Nice video! I'd go with the sweet I6 in the base CX-70 and save $14K. Tommy's Mom is still concerned about his sartorial tastes. :)
I have a Alfa Romeo Sprint PHEV EAWD and I get up to 75 kilometers ( max 83 kilometers ) on a smaller battery and I paid a lot less for it then the CX-70.
When I test drove one I thought the seat cushion what too short. No support
Mary throwing jabs 😂
Do a Denver 100 with it.
I wish we had more plug-in hybrid sedans. I love my Honda Clarity although I wish it had a bigger gas tank. Still, I can get 650-740 miles of range on a 7 gallon tank.
20 miles from a claimed 26 is not too bad considering the ambient temperature
is there gonna be a Mary review of the land rover she's been driving? cute seeing it in background
1:44 dang that music came in hot
What Tommy said 13:50 about the federal tax rebates is true. However, you can lease it and the 7500 federal tax rebate is given back to you from the dealer. I am buying one this week with rebates totaling $10,500. Plus discount off MSRP puts this in the $46K-$48K range.
Thank you for the video you 2 are awesome, Mary you need to be in more videos you are very entertaining.
Should’ve tried sport mode. So fast
Mazda is having problems with their PHEV's. Not sure I would purchase one. Tommy would never buy this car (even though he says he would) because it is not financially feasible for only 19 miles of EV range.
19 miles is not enough, just buy the hybrid and save $10,000.
But you admitted it wasn’t fully charged. 1:44
If only the Mazda MX-30 R-EV was more than a compliance car in the US. It would have had the 40 miles on battery you wanted.
Take a Hybrid and a Plug-in Hybrid up the Ike Gauntlet and see what happens.
That range (even if it got what it says on the paper) is pretty poor for a brand new model and the mpg isn't that great outside of that either. Not a fantastic whack at it, Mazda.
Agree 100%. If the Leaf is the worst EV the Mazda qualifies as the worse example of a PHEV. They typically get 30+ miles on electric only and have gotten better over the years.
Check out that Saab! 3:22
You get a $7,500 tax credit plus state incentives if you LEASE it. Loophole!
Plugging in the LEAF will give you much more range than the PHEV battery. Quit dissing the economical LEAF.
As a hybrid owner in cold Canada. Even a hybrid you will never save enough to recomp the cost if you do highway driving.
Please show math. There’s many models that disprove what you’re saying. So can you show math that supports your counter argument? 😊
depends too much on electricity prices/ gas prices and which car you get to decide. we do a lot of highway in our c300e, but it goes 60 miles. so not a problem at all. we have solar panels so free charging, an european gas prices so it definitely works
There’s something about Mary.
Every day commuting to and from work by car, I firmly believe that electric vehicles are still the superior choice and you don't have to spend 60k.
42k tops
Just get the ice version. The gas money saved will be no where near the expensive repairs later. Not including wasted time plugging in and risking fire burning down your house. Hard pass.
I'm with Mary, 20 isn't worth it.
I have a 2025 CX-90. Very unreliable car. Experience dealing with Mazda is dismal.
26 Miles on electric is a joke. My 2012 Volt gets almost 40!
It weighs a bit more than a volt lol
The late lamented Volt had 53 miles of range, that was TEN!!! Years ago. Why did they release a car with half that range now. Even the 53 in the Volt had wasn't enough. I had one from 2016-2019 and it was frustrating because I had to put in so much effort to keep in electric mode. I avoided highways like the plague because when I stayed on back roads I could stretch it to 72 miles in the summer and 60 in the winter (if I didn't use the heat). When it was really cold I just ran it as a gas car because heat is free from an ICE and the range was so short if you used the electric heater that you might as well do the whole trip on gas. I switched to a Tesla in 2019 and would never go back.
From a technical standpoint there is no point to PHEVs. If you have a place to plug in a PHEV then you have a place to plug in a BEV. If you don't have home charging then a PHEV does nothing for you, you might as well buy a regular hybrid. The only reason they exist is psychological, people who don't own BEVs are afraid they won't be able to charge. For those people a PHEV makes sense as a transitional car. But for them an EREV should have 100 miles of range. That's enough to do almost all of your local driving without using the engine without having to use the tricks I used with my Volt.
Okay, I got it 19 not enough 😢😌
What you said in the first 40 secs is dead on. Should have just stopped the video at that point.
Check out some reliability reviews; this model is not very reliable
I went for the i6 and it's a fantastic vehicle. The PHEV is great for people who do less than 20 miles range daily. The cold weather does suck, but they also don't have the battery tech for heating and prewarming because the gas engine is there. Theres, no point to put all of that in for a small battery, when you can just kick the gas engine on.
I will never understand also why people bitch and moan on the prices of these, when they're into 60, 70, 80k trucks or the domestic piles like ford or jeep that take an absolute bath on depreciation and expected longevity. The grand cherokee 4xe is MORE money for a base model (60k base vs 60k for a 70/90 loaded) and is regarded as one of the worst choices for reliability and longevity
because EVs are cheaper. and the price is a joke. this has the worst of both worlds including reliability
@@z1az285 you can get an ev that goes 450+ miles for under 60k that you can refil in 3 minutes?
@@Suction_ i don't need a EV that goes for 450+ miles. A EV with a 300 mile range is more than adequate for my requirements, or a regular hybrid that yields more than 50 mpg (range 500 miles). i have three years of extended warranty left on my Subaru and there will be plenty of models in the $30k -$40k price range to choose from after that. certainly not this one.
@@z1az285 if you run this as a normal hybrid you'll get 55+ MPG. Theres a guy in the group who runs it in ev only in town, gas on highway, charges it at work and then vice versa on the way back and is averaging somewhere between 60-65mpg on a 32 mile round trip. That demolishes every other traditional hybrid within that class and has nearly double the power of the competitors
@@Suction_ Sure, that's awesome to hear but Mazda isn't exactly known for reliability especially with their electrical issues (not too different from Subaru TBH though Subaru is a tad better), but the price is way too high for my liking and depreciation plus the cost of the extended warranty makes no sense to me personally. My budget is $40k, and i have three years to see what the landscape looks like. especially with sodium ion batteries on the horizon. the CX 50 light hybrid makes more sense to me price and fuel economy wise but will definitely need an extended warranty as well. ah well, just have to wait and see.
Plug in should make it 50 miles in any temperatures
Why??
@reserva120 the offset the cost of it being in the car
Not a BOT, not first but I am a TeamTFL fan!
What happened to zoom zoom? Did electrification kill zoom zoom? 🤔🤔🤔
This is just a rental car imho
You’ve never driven it but are making definitive statements? Ok 👍🏾
That $1000 for home charger will buy a lot of gas and convenience over the electric savings at only 20/day. Years to pay the difference. Not worth it.
19 miles just seems dumb. I get the idea, but the extra steps and mental effort is not worth it.
bad news 3 powertrains to maintain. ice, ev, and connection between (tranny). more parts, more breakdowns.
NOT in a Japanese car
@@Georgewashington-o7m what Japanese hybrid is not built like this? name one.
umm the Leaf is NOT the worse EVs, anything from korea or china is, troll
Worth EVERY PENNY
Not worth it
not a snowballs chance in hell. the worst of both worlds especially with Mazda electrical issues and reliability.
once the battery is depleted these large PHEV have horrible gas mileage despite having a small engine. Rav4 Prime on the other hand gets great mileage even after the battery runs out.
They are not even closer in size
60 grand for a Mazda!!!!????
That is ridiculous. That car will be sitting on the dealer lot for months, perhaps years without discounts.
But, but a so & so is also 60K.
too expensive...I HATE mazda NA. They dont take care of customers with the MANDATED airbag replacements. They will NOT travel to you to replace airbags so you can just take your chances driving with KILLER airbags.I had to sell my mazdaspeed6 for way less because of it. They will pester you with endless unsolicited phone calls and letters with graphic pictures of airbag carnage but will not travel 40 miles to fix. Mazda Ann Arbor is even worse than mazda NA. Never again.....Never buy mazda is my advuce to others.
You hsve no clue what you are talking about
Cool review. Is Mary married?
no
At that price I would just go get the new toyota 4 runner.
