I maintained and repaired many of these hydraulic jacks as well as tripod jacks used to lift up aircraft while in the service. This video took me back over 40 years. Thanks.
Thanks for the explanation of cold bluing. Other channels say things along the line of “it turns the metal black so it won’t rust,” and I knew that wasn’t the whole story!
Thank you, glad you liked it! I will make a whole video about cold bluing on my second channel soon, I am already preparing it! Check it out if you like, my second channel is @DrHutsLab
What an amazing piece! I have never seen anything like it. I can't imagine how much time went into restoring it, let alone your skill and talent. Bravo!
As allways i really enjoyed your video. Truly professional and entertaining. My only complaint is that we dont see as much of your work as i would like. Great job thanks.
Thank you very much! I really do my best to post as much content as I can, but I also want to present you guys high quality content and that takes time. Also I go to medical school, so I am over occupied most of the time 🥲😅 thank you for your support!
I want to add to my previous statement that many of the other ground support equipment mechanics I worked with did not like working on anything that did not have a power plant. They felt it was beneath them. I felt that if I did not do a good job that the jack would fail and the load it was carrying would fall on whoever was under it. That person would be terribly hurt or killed and of course the load which could be a vehicle or aircraft would be damaged. I commend you for your excellent work on bringing these abused and often forgotten pieces back to working condition.
Another excellent restoration. I also really respect the quality of your filming and editing. I know how difficult it is and your camera work is so clear, well lit and edited really well. Thank you Sir.
@@DrHutOfHandcraft You do not have to thank me. Your content makes us want to set up a personal workshop! But we need, apart from your chemical and mechanical knowledge, to have a lathe! Hehehe
@@GilsonJr.Whitout.Numbers Thank you so much for your kind words! Btw I also started without a lathe, everything comes with time 🙂 Good luck with your workshop!
You have an arbor press, and now with the jack you can build a hydraulic press! You are going to medical school? And restore machinery in your spare time and make videos about it. You are a man with many diverse interests! 🙂
magnificent, it’s very pleasant to watch when a master restores the smallest details to perfection. tell me what about the emblem? why didn't you restore it?
Another valuable and useful tool brought back to life with some chemistry thrown in - a perfect combination for me. Awesome job done. Quick question. I notice the nut at the top of the device was really quite gnarly and battered and was wondering why this was only cleaned up but not aesthetically improved by machining on the lathe or some degree of filing? Great video, though.
Thank you! The marks on the nut at the top were casting marks and I just decided to keep them as a contrast to the freshly painted part. Also I like the look of cold blued parts with casting marks 😄 It was just aesthetically pleasing for me so I left it like that 🙂 Thank you for your comment!
Fantastic work, dude! Really well done!!! 😃 About the toy car, perhaps it's time for you to invest in a rc car, hum? 😉 Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
With “good” condition I meant it was not in condition for dumping it at the metal waste like someone did. Of course you could do it like you described, but as you can see in the video the paintjob was in bad condition (probably due to poor paintjob before) and the zinc plating wasn’t in great condition also.
Noble rust isn’t a chemical term. Tbh I don’t even know if you can say it in english like that, but I have seen people explaining cold bluing and saying that the black layer is “noble rust”, which means “Edelrost” in german. “Edelrost” is a even and wanted rust on steel surfaces for optical reasons and also further corrosion protection. It is literally rust but not always naturally occurring, you kind of make the part rust to have that desired finish. Also “Edelrost” has a even surface unlike natural occuring rust. You could probably translate it into (desired) patina. If you have more questions feel free to ask :)
Skills, + a sense of humour. All credit to you Sir, & thanks for sharing !
Glad you liked it :) Thank you!
Another item saved from the landfill.. cracking restoration 👍

lol, loud music at the end!
also you should print a little sticker for the front :)

Using pipe wrench backwards. Pipe wrench designed to pivot tighter as turned. The way you were using it forces jaw to pivot open. Hmmm…..
I know, I did it the right way at the end of the video :)
I wonder why it didn't work in the first place 🤔great video BTW
Because there was no oil in it 🙂 I explained the basic physics of hydraulic jacks in the video description, check it out if you like
Y bueno, al final no se sabe de qué capacidad es este gato de levante... Asumo es para 5 toneladas. Es correcto?
Yes, it says 5 tons in the title of the video
You can still use that jack if you have a truck, but nice restoration
I don’t have a truck 😄 thank you
pipe wrench was backwards at the beginning.
Don’t really know what you mean
@@DrHutOfHandcraft if you turn the pipe wrench around it will grip better, like at the end
@@JerroldKrenek ah now I understand what you are saying! Yes you are totally right!
😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤

You said it was dirty but in good condition. Why not just clean it, fill it with oil, bleed it and put it use?

Of course you could do it like you described, but as you can see in the video the paintjob was in bad condition (probably due to poor paintjob before) and the zinc plating wasn’t in great condition also.
I've heard of "noble rot," but never "noble rust." For the chemically illiterate among us, would you expound on that a bit, please?
