- Laura Bayley, the most prolific British actress of the period and the wife of director G.A. Smith, shows her flare for clowning in this uproarious black comedy. Mary Jane learns that lighting your hearth with a tank full of paraffin may not be the safest of household chores, in a stern tale that could have come from the pages of 'Struwwelpeter'.
As in much of Smith's work, the film delights in its trick effects, including an explosion and the apparition of a ghost. (Alex Davidson)

I think it's funny that there are at least 2 cats randomly running around the sets.
I'm AMAZED the quality is still this good, discovering these short film for the first time, the film stock today has lost alot of the warmth and visual flair that only black and white can deliver
I love Mary Jane's character - even for a silent performance, reminds me of Lucille Ball. That smile to the audience - hilarious and brilliant.
Saw this in Film History for the first time this week... It's become a firm favourite!
All this going on and the cat could not care less.
Rest in pieces:D
Laura was a comedy Queen
That wink at the camera made me think of Kirsten Wiig.
I died when she came flying out the chimney XD
lol
pretty good special effects for 1903

Classic. One of my favourite silent films. ^^
I stopped in to the Musée Orsay in Paris and this video was one of their exhibits-so cool to find it online!
Totally love this excellent comedy pioneer
i laughed out loud from this. yup still funny over a century later
Rest in pieces!
Her smiles to the camera from about 0:55 to about 1:10 remind me of a Kristen Wiig character.
Need this in 4K
Rest in pieces
Booom,totally love this comedy !!!!
@BassGoesBoom1 you should watch George Melies stuff, it's from 1896 to something like 1905, he uses some brilliant effects.

JAMES PICKETT JR KING !!!!
This is making me want to play Red Dead Redemption 2.
De los primeros videos donde se ve un acercamiento al rostro e interacción con la cámara, por parte de la actriz

MARY JANE who LIGHTED THE FIRE am i the only one who gets this xD
No.
But we feel we didn't need to comment on the error, as it was done on purpose. To keep in theme with the era.
People, this was filmed back in 1903 and public education really wasn't that much to speak about. Our great grand parents spoke and probably still wrote like that and it was grammatically acceptable for the masses.
The Phoebe Waller Bridge of the 20th century
2:10 me pouring myself a mixed drink
First film ever that used continuity editing in one scene..
😂😂😂
When she yawned I could already picture her decomposing dead body that time long forgot...
(oh the irony, now that I saw how the movie ended :x)
Hilarious
1900s cinema snobs: *movies are all just special effects these days*
Miranda Hart should do a re-make of this.

This is like a lot like a modern Hollywood movie...
except, it doesn't have dreadful acting or dialogue composed by a young child.
