Zeos (Pee Shivers) Pantera
Somebody please get this man a Radiance so he gets the full set reviewed
hehe, probably lacking in the wide soundstage and too narrow - he needs to visit Disney one of their many sound halls😊
“The bass on these gives you the pee shivers”. The single best one liner ever uttered in any headphone review, anywhere ever.
I’m still laughing holy fuckkkkk ⚰️
Zeos hasn't listened to biodynas in a while...
I've tried them today and I totally fell in love with them. It feels like the sound is hugging you, not being distant
Focal: Introducing the Celesteves. Celestee but with soundstage.
There is nothing wrong with the soundstage width
Width changes with each song and how it was mixed
Width changes with the amp (push/pull or common ground and type of feedback)
Width changes with the headphones and speakers (materials/tuning/impedance)
With changes with phase and left/right matching accuracy of each and every component in the chain
Everyone simply needs a width control knob next to their balance control knob
Problem solved!
IT'S NOT THE HEADPHONES!!!
It's YOU!
...followed by the Celestesteves, Celestee but with Steve.
I've had my pair of Celestees for a year. Love them because it's like listening to a pair of nearfield speakers.
Love the m50x mention! I think I’ll watch that video again, that was a fun one.
Yes, need my soundstage.
@Zeos why not mention the Elegia? this is what replaced the Elegia so wondering how they compare
How do they compare tot he Aeon 2 Closed or the Aeon 2 Noire considering they are in roughly the same price range.
“I feel like Celestee with two ‘e’s is incorrect...”
*It’s called being French Z*
even Celestee/Célestée is incorrect in french. Made-up word. :P
Celestee with ee pronounced in France like « cup of tea » . This word doesn’t exist in french neither in english, it’s just a brand. So even the name is « fabriqué en France » (made in France) :-)
Would swapping the pads maybe affect the soundstage for the better, or are tubes the only way to go?
The best thing about the Celestee is that it made the Elegia $400...
Just got it from adorama. Very excited to try it!
Yeah, mine coming tomorrow, and I got balanced cables and a balanced dac/amp on the way. Can't wait!
@@tosvus where did you buy the cables? They were all so expensive that I had to make my own.
@@user-dc3pd7us6e I ordered them from Hart Audio Cables. They are pretty reasonable, and seem universally liked, so I'm optimistic. Still got a bit expensive as I ended up ordering two different cables (this one plus one for my HD6XX) as well as 3 different amp connectors. Hart Audio by default gives you a 4.5 feet cable that ends in a mini xlr on the amp side, so I paired that with 3 feet amp cables of various types.
agree, got a set for $360
I have the same issue with Stellia. I would rather have Elegia’s mids forward tuning for quiet listening.
Zeos, can you do another gamer audio guide?
When are you going to review Focal's speaker towers Z !? I want to buy the Aria 948 for a home theater setup and would love to see you review these speaKers before i make this purchase
Would you recommend the Celestee or clear professional? I’m debating on either of these.
Is the ath-r70x that bad bro? Having them on now lol, what would you recommend for studio use.. or is ath-r70x good enough?
I hear you, if you can properly hear where sounds have been placed when songs were mixed, it can seriously kill the experience. I love my Amphions for mixing but listening to stuff for fun is actually painful for the same reasons that you described in this review.
Yup, same deal with my ATC mains. They are unforgiving for listening, but precise for mixing.
its a pleasure listening to you, i only feel what the headphones are like after i hear you talk about them.
I looked up the Neumann response graph, looks like there is a valley of the higher mids.
I bought a pair of my Dekoni Audio Limited Edition Stellia Replacement Ear Pads, for my Focal Celestee and I must say it does give yhe headphones a livelier an slightly more open sound stage, and adding also adds a little more bass. I actually prefer listening to the Celestee using the Dekoni pads. I also own the Focal Elegia using Dekonis and the Celestee is just cleaner, clearer an has puncher bass. I much prefer the Celestee over the Elegia. I listened using the Topping A50s-D50s Stack.
is it worth it? are you feeling the same?
Hello Zeos. Can you try with the song 'Crossing' from Yosi Horikawa (maybe include it in your sound demo). I'm listening on a DX220 with Amp9 tube module (KORG Nutube) and I find the stage very adequate. Not the largest but compared with my Sundara on the same device and I hardly notice a difference. Maybe it's due to the amazing imaging (like you so well reported) but all Yosi songs sound very good on the Celestee.
Why no comparison to Elegias?
SMSL SAP-1 ! So excited
These are $600 aud here in Australia (about $390 USD). Seems like a decent deal. Is there anything close backed in that price range you would recommend over these?
I really like these headphones but be warned if you use ifi "X bass" the speaker rattles on some bass heavy tracks.
I ordered them just because I can deal with a narrow soundstage if I get pee shivers.
Gods, those are pretty. If they had these in open and soundstagey, I might spend $1K. Or just make the Clears in this colorway.
What about the $300 Focal Headphones?
nice to meet you steve
Do you think you could re-review DT 770 Pro's? I bought them recently with the impression that they're the best sound quality/audiophile headphones under $200, but your review was in 2014. Do you think that still holds? Where do they stand in comparison to the m60x headphones?
Hi Guy, I think the dt770 250 ohm is like a mini th900 with the correct pad swap. End game worthy for some and if you enjoy it then that's what matters.
Commented by a dude with multiple totl headphones
Harvey Korman - "Wait for the shake!" - History of the World Pt 1
Regarding wireless headphones - not necessarily noise cancelling but what are your favourite under 500 dollars?
Probably the drop pandas, but I haven't owned them so idk
How do these compare to the Elgia?
Morning Z! Rachmaninov prelude in C Sharp Minor, Czech Philharmonic. Do you hear the French horns distorting in the headphones?
an excellent question.
I should ask that to people in general
Please what is better choice for metal music celestee ot elegia (or fostex) (oooor audeze)? Thanks!
Clears
Are these better than the elegia in soundstage
Does stellia have soundstage?
Where is your ZMF VC?
nice
Sent with Beats Solo 2
For the record i wasn't yelling at you. I love the confabulations. They entertain me.
Please try a pad swap for soundstage on these
yooooo! koss p/21 review? 😳
Nice review. Top notch clarity and intimate staging seem to be typical Focal attributes. I like Elegias for gaming (immersive, cinematic, fun sound), and also used them for a long time as a listening reference at work, because they're such excellent closed backs. Sounds like Celestee is similar in a lot of respects, but with better bass, and probably somewhat different tuning.
Now that I've been into headphones for a long while, I tend to agree that a little bigger staging adds more dimension to music than the typical Focal sound. It's part of what sets Susvara at a level above and beyond Utopia, for example.
I tried the Elegia.
I've found it quite fatiguing. Like putting my ears close to some powerful speakers.
I'm actually afraid to try the clear MG
Sounds like you just turned the volume up way too loud. But nevertheless the clear MG sounds pretty different.
As someone who likes
Deep low end
Closed backs
The colour blue
Not much soundstage
These seem perfect for me. Now I have to find a way to get 1k$..
Genuine question, why do you prefer less soundstage?
@@ManWithFace I just find that I like more intimate and aggressive sounds. I want to know every detail and bring it as close to me as possible so Ican basically "feel" it. Having large soundstage removes that intimacy for me and is why I didn't like the sundara as much, as everything felt too distant. I thought I would like the gl2000 for this reason, but the fact that its very open and bass lite killed it for me.
I get where you are coming from. Although I have opens, semi-opens and closed, a great set of closed backs would tickle my fancy. "Intimate and aggressive" is a good description. Sometimes I want to crank it up and feel like I have the best seat in the house at a studio or lounge......not the best seat at a 10,000-20,000 seat arena (if that makes sense). I need to feel it...not picture it. I personally don't want the widest possible sound ALL of the time. But I like the option.
Me too, i don’t have crazy wide soundstage headphones but i have the legacy 3s and that is like a 180 degree soundstage and hate that
Just bought the Celestee and it is amazing. It’s what the French is all about - close and intimate
So, according to Zeos: Cadillac Brougham > Mazda Miata if cars are sound
The Audio Technica ath-awkt is King of sound stage. But is very picky, it prefers certain genres, like Jazz, acoustic, ballads with female voice. No other hps in my collection sounds this beautiful......the Denon D9200 is a crowd pleaser......
Tried these a few weeks ago. The best thing about the Celestee is they don't clip like the other Focal headphones do for some reason. Still preferred my LCD-XC to the Celestee as far as finding an end game closed back. XC just has the better detail, punch and slam. With that said the Celestee are still a very good closed back
Almost 700g without cable. That is the definition of uncomfortable...
@@omeee This new Carbon Fiber XC is actually really comfortable. I tried an LCD-X last year and hated the weight and comfort... but this Carbon Fiber XC must have a newer headband or something because I'm fine with their weight and the pads are like ear pillows. With all that said some will still not be able to handle the weight, especially if you want to listen to a headphone all day... Which I never do.
@@JTB-- Interesting, great that you enjoy that headphone. Will have a listen some time. For me comfort is priority no 1 and anything over >500g I've tried starts to get annoying really fast. Would love to have something like a Focal with 300g.
Z, my dude, how do they compare to the Focal Elgias since they’re review is fresh in your mind? I’ve had mine for 2 years and I’m thinking about upgrading to those but I’m having second thoughts, and we’re talking a lot of money >
I have same question!
For one the Celeste have more bass. I know that for certain. And possibly a less present treble presentation that never steps over the line. I own the Elegia but only spent an hour with the Celeste.
less tiring listen with celestee for me
Needs more SoundStage.
Considering the problems he has with the French language, it's a good thing Sennheiser doesn't name their headphones.
Hi Steve!
this man talks like hes not taking his adhd meds and i love it
Z I fucked up and got the Kabaneri tea, still pretty good but gives me a ton of heartburn.
This goes down to the core why I will not follow a DMS advise when it comes to Headphones. That is also why he doesn't get the X2s, F-Tire Reviewer in my list.
Hi x55 are best studio monitors and they have fuckin great soundstage!! You should review them Zeos!! I use them and I know what I'm telling you..
Samurai Champloo was brilliant, Nujabes made some great tracks for the show.
I have a pair of these and after 10 days of listening to them I find myself on the fence about either keeping them or sending them back. For me $1000 is big coin so I want to be sporting a giant Woodrow when I listen to music. These have impressive technical abilities and detail retrieval but it's pretty much in your face. I don't hear a lot of width or depth and it's just a shame. I want to love them but in the end I'm not sure I will ever really want to listen to them full time. I enjoy my LCD-2 and HD-600's. I own a pair of KEF Space One which are closed back as well, and while I haven't compared the two yet I believe the KEF to be a wider sounding pair of cans, and I got them for under $130 when I bought them. Maybe I just don't care for closed back headphones in general but I kind of have a need with an autistic child in the house.
They went back. I bought a pair of Dan Clark Audio AEON Open X. Just got them yesterday so no opinions on them just yet other than that they are certainly wider sounding and do female vocals really well. We'll see what happens as I get more time with them.
@@tomdavis6371 awesome update how you like them I was considering those but I picked up some elega for around 500 usd love them I believe those around same price point atleast the drop ones are was looking in to open back headphone soon
@@gabrielmoreno5775 I really haven't owned them long enough or heard them enough hours to properly get to know these headphones yet. At this point I know that they are a bargain at this price point and that I will be keeping them. There is definitely something magical going on here so far as I have determined. This is my fourth pair of Planars, I also own the HiFiMan Sundara with non-stock pads, the Audeze EL-8 and the Audeze LCD-2. The LCD-2 is a superior headphone to the AEON in every way, and it should be at $1100. And that's OK. The AEON are super lightweight and unbelievably comfortable on the cranium. They are built really well and sexy as hell. They do soundstage prett darn well and vocals are outstanding so far as I can determine at this point. I haven't picked up on much bottom end here thus far but have repeatedly been told to give them some time, not that I have ever bought into that kind of thing. Having decided at this point that I will keep them certainly gives me time to see if there is anything to that theory of burn-in time though. They come with a number of inserts which they refer to as tuning pads but I have removed them in order to just hear them un=molested first. I'll play with the inserts as I have time. As for the accessories, I have the stock cable which is nice enough and they come with a decent clam shell type carrying case which is decent enough. Mine has the Dan Clark logo on it rather than the Mr. Speakers logo, same as on the headband strap. I wish I could have been more helpful but I have heard them for just a few hours so far.
@@tomdavis6371 Hello!
So what is your opinion on DCA? I have ath-ad2000x and I really love it. But those are open headphones. As closed ones I have K 371 which lacks in sound detalisation. So I thinking about changing my k371 to LCD-2 closed/denon 7200/DCA A2 Noire/Fосаl Celestee.
I'm not sure if you've heard about taxes Zeos, but there are over 1000$
So ignoring the sounstage, these are basically amazing. Sold.
I wasn’t impressed with anything about the Celestee. Comfort wise they suck, they bleed lots of sound even at moderately low volume, they are shouty, and give you that in-your-head soundstage. They kill the atmosphere of epic tracks. I sent mine back
@@dmitris77 k
I like them and I own hd800s as well the sound stage isn't bad at all. In my opinion.
@@thelonepainter4760 same here my guy, I've had mine over a month now, I think I actually prefer its sound overall
Not really, you're better off hifiman ananda nano
They only come in the nasty blue color? If so, I'm doubly happy I got the Elegias! :D
So my dude, best closed back with ok soundstage? Open back aren't really an option for me. Cheers
The Elegias are actually pretty good with Soundstage. Predecessor to the Celestees, and can be had for 400 at Adorama! Just got them today, and already really like them. Waiting for a better dac/amp and balanced cables though!
@@tosvus Hey thanks. I ended up with some Celestees which are very closed in every sense of the word but sound great. Then I grabbed some Grado SR325x when they launched, sound amazing I have to say and very open. I was not a fan of the thin sounding previous Grado models but these are truly impressive in the low end. Thought I’d build out my headphone quiver a bit more as I couldn’t find a do it all headphone.
Mr Z, which are the best closed backs in your opinion?
what's your ceiling?
@@masterxyr no ceiling.. Just asking abt the best sounding ones..
Also, comfort (and weight) are important as they are in use for many hour every day

well I recommend the Elegias (which I own and know), especially now as they can be found for half-price. Above that its mixed everywhere. Some say this others that. bggr said the stellias and empyrean were a joke for the price...
happy music :)
I haven't seen them in person, are they navy blue or french navy?
They are dark matte navy blue. Looks better in person then photo or video for sure.
@@simonguilmain8834 thanks. They're very pretty.
They are half price at a local store, literally $350 usd cause they wanna get rid of them, discontinued. He said your hifiman anada nano are better overall
Zeos' desk pad looks like a guy from one of my favorite bands... The Dead South a Canadian blue grass band and they kick so much arse. If you've never heard them I suggest looking up: The Dead South - Live at House of Blues (Full Set)... Watch until the end as it's epic!
Yeah, dms said that this is like a super version of k361..... which make them neutral af
I’m not into NPR, but these sound like the NPR tiny desk concert of headphones.
I just got some pre owned Elegias for llke $580 which isn't as good as the $400 adorama closeout sale, but damn are these worth way more than the price tag. Also considering this is the new Focal, I think I got the better end of the deal.
Hi. Have you ever compared the Elegia to the Clear original headphones? Thanks
@@keithb5612 the original Clears are slightly more open, with a more detailed and dinamic sound.
@@keithb5612 I actually now upgraded to the Clear MG, and have them paired with the Topping A30 D30 pro stack. There really sound excellent, dynamic, thumping clear bass. Just overall awesome sound. I use the Elegia as my closed back alternative on the IFI Hip-dac V2 which helps elivate the bass on these.
@@RayCabrera1 Thanks Ray. Enjoy the music.
I’ve been saying this for a while now, Focal closed back hps are flawed. But don’t worry they will have more of the same in 4 months 😂😂😂😂
to me, seems like Zeos tried to find fish from his backyard. For the soundstage, he shouldn't try the closed backs. I am sorry if he compared to other closed backs.
“Claustrophobic Clarity.” - Focal, maybe.
Damn. I just wish there was a place I could go and listen to the entire goddam Focal lineup so I could tell which one I like best. I keep watching these reviews and all I get is frustrated. I know they are all good to a certain degree but I can't tell which one I'd really like best from everybody just talking about them. Soooooo frustrating. I don't want to buy a $1000 to $1500 headphone just to try it out. I hear what Z is saying about the Celestee, but maybe I would still like it better than the Clear. Or maybe not. Ugh.
@redstang5150 did you ever find which headphones you prefer? May I ask what you like about them?
@@hmmnope9231 I ended up really tired of being on the fence and just got the Clears. Their price finally went down since the Clear Mg had been out for a while so that got me to pull the trigger. Plus I have seen so many good reviews of the Clears I figured I just couldn't go wrong. DMS did another review of them and that also convinced me that at a minimum I wouldn't be disappointed. And in the end, they are really great. Pardon the pun, but they seriously are the clearest headphones I have and they are the ones I use most often. I still like to switch up, but the Clears are the overall best.
@@redstang5150 Wow! Thank you! That helps me a bit in deciding if I should buy some expensive headphones! The most I would spend is $200 and I went down a rabbit hole on how expensive can headphones get, and if they even get better.
@@hmmnope9231 Sure. The REALLY hard thing is to then start trying to assess value to them, like is it worth it to spend about a grand on those Clears vs. something else? That's a personal decision relative to your bank account. I can only say that you will probably really like them. I have the Senn HD599se's I got for around $100 (amazon lightning deal) that I really like too. Are the Clears worth an extra $800 to me? UGH that's so hard to judge. Not if I needed that money to pay rent. At the same time, I don't regret the purchase at all because they're really good and it informed me as to what you get for that money. If you have the discretionary money and you like headphones you'll definitely appreciate them.
@@redstang5150 Wow! Thank you so much! This helps a lot!!
This looks nice........ Wait i just sale the price.
Not for me
Clear or utopia pads for more stage?
Considering Focal tuned and released these headphones with leather pads my gut tells me to not experiment with anything that deviates to far from the stock pads. Maybe some Dekoni Elite Sheepskins would work.
I have tried the Elex pads on them but that changed the sound too much and I didn’t like it.
Another headphones that were not sent as freebies.
oh maybe ill try that tea oh its 70 dollars
nevermind...
Did you remove the phoenix fromthe wall?
Just to use them.
@@ZReviews bought one because of you and couldn't be happier. For accoustic, pop and hip-hop and some orchestra they are sweet.

Focal Celestee pizza headphones.😊😋
Got ride of the HD820s for these.
Can you try to make these wider with opamps or surround software????
Does the celestee really sound better than the hd820?
@@DuranInternational I know sound is subjective. So for me the HD820s aren't worth the price for what I listed to. The bass was lacking for me. By "lacking" I mean there wasn't any low cool sounding bass and it wasn't punchy or slamming. I also own a pair of sennheiser hd800s and those are great open back heaphone. Also the HD820s had alot of sound stage, but it was weird because the sounds were far apart from each other but I couldn't really tell where everything was coming from(if that makes any sense lol). So I returned them and got these. The soundstage for the calestee is I guess narrower, but not like in a small box like Zeros says it. These headphones shine when it comes to detail and sound placement. Also for me the bass hits hard on these. So yes, I would recommend the Celestee over the HD820S.
@@thelonepainter4760 thanks I have the celestee and wanted the 820 as well because of the design, thanks for saving me money lol
@@DuranInternational No problem! Glad to help!😊 By the way I got some op amps and answered my own question up top. The op amps do make the soundstage wider on the Celestee and hd800s. If your looking for a wider range headphone go with the hd800s, but they are open back not closed back like the HD820s.
@@thelonepainter4760 thanks I recently purchased the focal clear mg a few days ago

They are definitely narrow, but I still love them.
Try a different cable. Periapt balanced gives a decent sound stage imo and the sound is definitely better than with some other cables I have.
@@midi6700 I've had periapt cables in the past, but I make my old cables. I don't notice a difference in sound in cables personally

Soundstage is a personal preference. Something a lot of people tend to forget: their idea of “better quality headphones” is bigger soundstage. Also, some (in fact quite a lot) of music doesn’t need or want a big soundstage.
You're the hardest working youtuber out there
I need a vacation.
Probably the most important comparison should be to the Elegia, since Celestee is basically replacing the Elegia, and yet there wasn't a single mention of Elegia in the review. Thumbs down.

I would buy focal in a second if I was confident the driver wouldn't fail on me within a year. Far too many driver failures with elex and elegia
early Elear / Elegia models had driver failures. They had a revision and fixed it. Alle Clears for example do not have this issue. Elex got the crap drivers that still existed, what do you expect for a 600$ Focal?
@@omeee I hope you're right. I'm seriously considering getting the Mg.
@@omeee I expect a $600 headphone to fucking work lmao
@@D6isD6 They do work but where do you think they cut cost? Made in France, build quality like a 2000$ headphone. Do you expect they put the best drivers they have into elex? They put in what they had lying around. Maybe nowadays the drivers in the elex are the reworked version that are not prone to failure.
edit: The MG has a completely different driver. But they learned their lesson I guess.
@@omeee They don't have $2000 build quality, that is absolutely hilarious.
It's a luxury item, it costs less than $100 to manufacture and is marked up to cover French wages and advertising.
Having drivers fail regularly on any product above $100 is embarrassing. Cheap versions of expensive drivers should still be of very high quality, not shit tier that break immediately.
There is a game called Celeste and one called Elex
"Seh-les-tee"
I literally just commented because I can relate on the pee shivers
Real talk... z hates the celestee for no soundstage yet pimped hp3 for a year which are open backs with no sound stage. I own hp3s and can confirm this.... soundstage is not critical to my preferences.
the zeos effect is out of pocket now..... the damn TEA is out of stock :|
Celestees do have sound stage! It is a decent average sized sound stage. The thing is that they are cable sensitive. So far getting the best sound and sound stage with balanced Periapt. They sound like compressed DR and less sound stage with balanced Mimic cable for example.

Why on Earth do Some Audiophiles think high end 🔌cables like 3.5 to a 3.5 or 3.5 to quarter inch dont make a difference in audio quality?
