    Great review! Very attractive HP. Definitely a great option for closed back. Open back fan and have Elegia if needed. Chased the dragon and spent way too much $ and glad to have finally stopped after getting the Clear. Added the RME and completely satisfied. Miss my Arya's so may add them later. In the meantime surprisingly enjoying the M570 which IMHO is the best buy currently available. Far from perfect, but for $200 a steal.

    Is it possible that headphone companies intentionally make parts of the product imperfect (eg: choosing to include unwieldy cables) so they can "solve" a problem they themselves created in their future products, thereby giving people an incentive to upgrade?

    Excellent review. I suppose if one can get around the lack of staging, this one would appeal to those who found the Clear to be too bright and a bit shouty. I thought this would just be an updated Elegia but it seems to take some strengths of the Clear and draws those in as well. Focal definitely is ahead of other companies in the integration of their product tiers

    • @Assimilator702
      @Assimilator702 3 года назад +5

      I would 100% consider this an upgraded Elegia. The Focal family of headphones have much more in common than not use to the unique design of the drivers and all they have in common. After all we’re talking about frequency response. All the other Focal uniqueness and benefits are still present in all the models. And yes Focal is extremely far ahead of the curve compared to totter headphone companies. That is mainly due to the fact that Focal is a speaker manufacturer and design and build their own drivers. You ever hold a Focal headphone driver in your hand? They’re designed like high end speakers and built like tanks and not like the usual flimsy headphone drivers that weigh nothing.

    This is a great review. Literally everything I wanted you to do, further in to the video you did. Like I was watching and hoping you would compare the freq-response to the Radiance which you did. Then I expected a separate comparison later which you also did. It's seldom you get a video that gives you everything you want. You're quickly turning into my favorite reviewer despite having having wildly different music preferences.
    I do wonder though how these 2 stack up with EQ against each other. How would they compare with harman 2018 EQ and then harman combined. I'm aware they are new headphones so I might have to wait for that answer.
    For me based on what you said I would have to go with the Radiance. "Better" bass with wider soundstage seems right up my ally.

    There's a strong possibility my $600 headphone limit just got exceeded?

  • @klaushaunstrupchristensen7252
    @klaushaunstrupchristensen7252 3 года назад +14

    Great! I have this belief that the 300 Hz dip has crept, wrongfully, into all types of audio reproduction, because loudspeakers will interact with the closest room boundaries. The reflection of the floor between listener and loudspeaker leads to a substantial dip in the frequency response around 250-400 Hz. This was studied in depth in the 1970’s by the late great Roy Allison. Anyone interested in the loudspeaker room interface should read Roy Allison’s papers, which are easy to find online. By the way the papers are easy to grasp. So how does this matter with headphones? Well.... I theorize that because we have become so accustomed to this dip in the frequency response, we actually prefer it to be there even though it is a distortion. Beware that at the concert hall there is an identical dip in frequency response, so the distortion is compounded thing. First there is a dip in response created at the concert, then there is a dip in the listening room increasing its depth. This means that with recordings made with very close miking, this dip in response is actually desirable, because it recreates the dip lost with the close miking technique (semi anechoic thereby no interaction with anything ). Well audio is difficult and strange, but it’s part of the fun. Greetings from Denmark

    • @DBSTH0R
      @DBSTH0R 3 года назад

      @@dill6078 Well, they do seem to have a more correct tuning than Clear + better materials & slightly better cable. I especially like the added bass. Not that the Clear is lacking, just that I got used to it. Much like you do with a car which has more power than the one before it. :) Especially for the music I'm listening to.
      If I was buying today, I'd get these over the Clears no second thoughts. In spite the low impedence. Having 2 versions of the same headphone at this price range isn't really appealing to me. And selling Clear Pro to replace it with Celestee I am not sure about - Focal apparently doesn't allow warranty transfer.
      My current thought process follows what Andrew said: that it is good to have several headphones because our brains adjust to the FR of each one after a while. Because of that I am now eyeballing Verite Closed (my use case scenario shows I need a pair that blocks outside noise). And Arya is also tempting due to the apparent synergy with my setup...

      I think the general feedback is that the Elegia was a pass @ MSRP but a solid value @ the $400 Adorama close out price. Just by resolve comparing this to a closed back Clear says all you need to know about the tuning and technical performance. At $1000 I would go as far to say as it's a good value even compared to the $2k+ Stellia. If $1k is too high then wait 3-6 months on headfi and pickup a used pair under $750.

    Hi there, thanks for your reviews (have subscribed). really useful. I'm currently using HD6xx and would like a closed-back 'upgrade', so looking at the Celestee and also the Elegia. With the Elegia being widely available in the UK for £599 and the Celestee at £999, would you say the extra money is worth it? I'm out of work at the moment so selling some bits to afford these and don't want to waste £300. I would hope for a slightly larger soundstage than the HD6xx with better extension in both directions. Better imaging and detail would be a nice bonus. My musical tastes sound very similar to yours. Any advice appreciated and keep it up!.

    I bought mine Sunday and they are due to arrive tomorrow. My collection is modest compared to others, with this being just my second pair of cans with an MSRP at about the $1000.00 price point, the other being the Audeze LCD-2. The remainder include the Audeze EL-8 Open Back, Sennheiser HD-535, and 600, KEF M500 and Space One, HiFiMan Sundara, and Sony XB950BT. I can hardly contain myself waiting to hear these but I do wish they would include a 6+ foot cable.

    • @tomdavis6371
      @tomdavis6371 3 года назад

      After listening for four days I like them more than on day one but I am still kind of trying to get accustomed to closed back headphones. My Space One are closed back but it's been a while since I've listened to them. I'm not a fan of the included cable, primarily because it's too short for my needs so I decided to purchase a seven foot cable from Periapt which is a bit of a more robust and I suspect better quality cable than I usually purchase from Amazon for about $16-18 each. I am not personally interested in spending hundred of dollars on cable unless someone were to offer me a trial so that I could hear with my own ears how I could possibly justify the ridiculous cost.

      I have the elegias and I wear glasses and I didn't notice any loss in quality as a consequence of it. They're not bass heavy but they do have bass ...it's balanced and tasteful bass to my ears. Get the Elegia now while they’re still available for a low price. I have the Elegia and the bass is reduced a touch with glasses so I won’t wear glasses while wearing the Elegia. For my head a bit more clamp would be beneficial. Luckily the Elegia work very nicely with the Dekoni Elite Sheepskin pads which increase the bass slightly but not by much while the treble and midrange is not negatively impacted. When you feed the Elegia some juice the low end wakes up a bit. They sound amazing on the Asgard 3. I bought my Elegia from Adorama for $423 shipped and they were brand new and sealed.

    • @dill6078
      @dill6078 3 года назад +1

      I'll throw in my 2 cents since I just got the Celestee and had the Clear for a few days. Both sound awesome... but the Clear clipped on certain tunes. Bass heavy music at high volume would clip the clear a lot. Clipping/distortion etc... has NEVER happened with the Celestee and I've tried. Focal even admits this about some of their drivers. Now with that said... the Clear should not Clip if you listen at "Normal" volumes. But some will want to crank their headphones volume up high for certain genres of music now and then and on occasion the Clear and Elex will clip.
