Going to be making another video with more games and more in-depth. As well show the better alternative to cpu boost off. When you limit your fps, with boost on, the cpu will pull more power. So in instances where you are instilling an fps lock, cpu boost off can save battery. However, there are better ways about this.
Thank you for the testing! It seems like other videos I’ve seen seem to think disabling CPU boost didn’t gain much in the way of average frames but may have helped the 1% and 0.1% lows for smoother feeling gameplay. Did you notice this at all? But good to know that it probably doesn’t make enough difference to worry about turning it on and off constantly.
There was one instance in gears 5 where it did but that was the only one in my testing Edit: I did do full testing and have all the results. But like I said in the video negligible
I ran into a big problem involving CPU boost, where on boot up, the CPU would immediately boost up to about 4.3 ghz regardless of power plan and generate a huge heat spike because the cooling system wouldn't spin up. The heat would cause the device to freeze and then die after barely 20 seconds of uptime with no BSOD. Disabling CPU boost solved that problem and has made me very cagey about re-enabling it. I may try the Efficiency boost option, but since there's little to no difference in most games between CPU boost on and off, I struggle to see why it's necessary.
That's definitely not as normal and would point to something being wrong with a driver or windows itself. I'd suggest reinstalling all drivers and see if that fixes it. Use only Asus supplied drivers.
Personally I keep it on but did consider turning it off for the sake of battery life...this video settled the question as to how much real-time battery life I would be gaining at the expense of potentially lower quality gameplay? 5-10% more battery life is not a world changer in comparison to 50 mins of lower quality gameplay.
This is a tough situation, however what i find interesting is when it is off i was seeing at least 5 degrees C cooler on temps, now maybe that part can be thrown out by custom fan curves but i still found it interesting. I personally use my ally plugged Max power in custom mode, with 90% fan when temps are over 60 degrees, it has kept my ally cool and i never really see temps over 75-80 degrees c at worse case scenario playing games like red dead or gta 5.
@@NameForgotten1 lmfao you're still on about this. They did not perform better nor did it "use less power" Just stop before you hurt yourself in your confusion. Edit : and generally most people just show a clip of them playing god of war with it on then off. Non repeatable tests.. Edit: much like the video you posted...
It literally does not... Here you go my pinned post. All results just for you. Temps were negligible that's why I didn't bother recording them on this data sheet. I don't know who taught you numbers and margin of error, however it did not perform anywhere better. Then please explain to me how using your settings I got better results than you (the exact same 41 avg) boot cpu boost on and off. Guess what because it doesn't make the difference you seem to think it makes. At desktop sure you save clocks. In game, no you don't... !
can verify that with CPU boot off, the cpu will still boost up to about 4000 when it detects a demand. with the cpu boost on, the cpu usually sits at 4500-5000 and eats up battery stupid fast.
It would be cool if Asus limited to cpu frequency with a bios update, disabling Turbo Boost limits it to 3.3ghz, they could instead cap it to 4ghz, so it would be enough for cpu demanding games, but not too much like the current 5ghz
How do you run games when the screen goes black while the sound is still on. Afterwards, the game crashes stating “Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost. Any advice I’d greatly appreciate it 🙏🏻
Don't have a strong opinion about it on the Ally (yet) but turning it off or keeeoint it on "Efficient" has had a big impact on my laptop - particularly on thermals and acoustics. Those would be important factors to consider here as well.
Personally, I did not notice any sort of thermal difference in my testing, at these wattages. The only time was when I was able to make myself cpu-bound in hitman and totk. It would be beneficial for desktop tasks not having it blast up to 5.1 GHz, however that could potentially limit your download speeds as well. Depending on how fast your connection is. Oddly when I set it to be efficient, it clocked in lower than off. I understand people's point of contention with the fan, yes in certain instances it could result in reduced fan speed but nothing that couldn't be addressed or made better by a custom curve. Apparently there is a minimum floor for the fan curve now in 322, but I have still found myself to thermally throttle in turbo mode 30w boost. All of these tests were completed at 30w except for the battery life with the third preset fan profile applied in the curve settings.
According to all benchmarks I've seen on You Tube working with CPU on Rog Ally something not, really, necessary, just because CPU load is about 30%....Even in your CP demo we have 22% of CPU Load. Instead GPU load is almost 100%. So, why do we need to tune CPU in this situation? If CPU is under low usage it will never go to Turbo mode.
It won't go into turbo mode which is fine. When not needed. However as we've seen in recent releases (Alan Wake 2, Jedi Survivor, Starfield) they often times will call for and above the base clock speed. Same thing with switch emulation or higher end emulation. They are CPU hungry and you will get much worse perf with it turned off
I would love to see you test Dead Island 2 On vs Off. I had amazing gains from disabling Turbo since its a GPU bound game and Turbo enabled appeared to prevent the GPU from boosting aggressively. It was roughly a 8-15fps gain for me , so I'd be curious what your observations are. I also get lower performance in some games with 30 watt Turbo enabled.
No problem, in further testing if you are limiting your fps you will save power. But if you are playing unlocked you will see no difference. Another video will be coming this week
Hey man under processor, power management, it says processor, performance autonomous mode. Then it gives me the option on battery and plugged in. It doesn't let me choose aggressive at all. When I did the H key thingy, I made sure to do it as an administrator though. Cause I forget that stuff Sometimes. Help would be appreciated
At all? Try flipping through gamepad mode and desktop. Then try turning the embedded controller on and off. If all else fails re-download all of the ROG Ally drivers from their site. Namely the software stuff.
In which case? It shouldn't be. I've tested this in re4, Forza, gears, cod at different tdp levels. The GPU should be allowed to boost normally, if not "slightly" higher if we are cpu bound.
@@carlopanarelli7798 no problem! I know I could have explained the clocks better. But essentially in a cpu bound situation, such as TOTK or hitman 3 of will strangle the tdp because it can't go past 3.3
@@carlopanarelli7798 barely noticeable in my testing. See furmark and heaven benchmark. Keep in mind those are not designed around direct x 12 with modern game engines in mind. Ray tracing, lumen, fsr, DLSS etc. All of these things rely on the cpu some more than others. Having the extra cpu grunt to do these things far outweighs the potential 100-300 MHz you get on the GPU.
Thanks for the video. I am one of those mad lad who use the Ally as a PC (upgrade to Win11 Pro so that I can RDP into it). After the CPU Boost off I can clearly feel it becomes less responsive with Office app with it called for CPU heavy taskes. This video confirmed my suspicions.
what if i already disabled CPU boost before by editing the regedit to 2 and change power plan to disabled? if i want to re-enable, do i just switch power plan to aggressive or i can just edit regedit back to 1?
Nah you can just switch it back to aggressive. Just verify in all of your power plans, and plugged in, that it is switched to aggressive. If you only did it once, you likely have some modes that were boosting still
This guy is wrong.. Watch the video. CPU Boost off outperforms in the video in Cyberpunk AND Hitman 3. It loses in ToTK but it's running at close to half the wattage.
great video I was on the fence about it, On or Off... I tried off recently and the games I tried (old stuff) didn't seem to suffer from it, but In armory crate or windows, the cpu goes really low and It feels a bit sluggish to operate And for the price we paid for the device, we might aswell use it to it's full power! thanks for this video!
There is a guy ranting on Reddit ranting about his theory that CPU boost could be a potential cause for SD card issues. Something like giving more voltage to CPU is also overloading the SD card reader somehow. Obviously neither that guy or you are electrical engineers, but do you think that theory could have any merit or nah?
I highly doubt it. If anything it would be the higher heat that killed it. I think it's just an unfortunate placement for the SD card reader combined with the fact that they advertise the SD cards to be fine for triple a gaming. Which is fine, it can be. But the typical SD cards that people are putting in aren't typically rated highly for consistent data transfers. I have a "4k surveillance certified" SD card. It is basically just better built for constant transfers. I've not had an issue at all with mine, however I've always run a manual fan curve and only running ROMs off it. Edit: Mind you only switch ROMs, so the cpu is clocking up to 4+GHz
Just spoke to this individual, from speaking with him I can confirm he has no idea what he is talking about and when confronted with better results, using his provided settings. Both with the cpu boost on and off. He circled back to how my tdp was different in the cyberpunk comparison. Even after retesting and giving him evidence he still fails to see where he is wrong.
Im that guy, and this video actually shows us how wonky the power differentials are. CPU Boost OFF wins in Cyberpunk and Hitman3, and loses in ToTK while running at HALF the wattage.
Witchcraft and good fortune. Lol jk, it happens just not nearly as bad in this spot. You can see it at the beginning a little* on the ramp up. Use yuzu-ea they just added new options Edit: typo

I mainly play emulators on my rog. Actually it’s probably only emulators I play on my rog 😂 and I have always got it docked to my tv. So it’s always connected to power. So, would having the cpu boost benefit me? As emulators are cpu heavy aren’t they.
Interesting. I haven't seen much difference either turning it off. And to be honest, I wasn't exactly brave enough to try this until someone else did (lol), and that was around the time the the AMD hotfix and BIOS 322 dropped ... so any of those variables could have affected performance/temp/fan speed. I've done this with my Laptop in the past. It actually reduced performance in many games at 1440p albeit only 2-3fps. But it was worth it then because it significantly reduced the fan noise which was like a jet engine. I'm not seeing that benefit from the Ally though as I'm really only doing 15 or 18w. Here's what I gots (aggresive vs off, fps/temp): [Turbo, 1080p, Med, 4GB VRAM] GR Wildlands: Agg=45.41/95°, Off=46.15/95° Immortal Fenyx: Agg=43, Off=43/95° Dirt 5: Agg=48.2/79°, Off=50.0/80° Shadow of TR: Agg=40/79°, Off=40/80°
Good to know thanks for the info. I imagine the battery life savings, and fan noise reduction on a laptop would be worthwhile however I didn't see a significant drop in temps in my testing either. The only time we dropped temps and fan noise was when we were cpu limited, like in TOTK. Edit: Same with your results, not much difference
The video shows Boost OFF as out performing, with the exception of ToTK. But in ToTK it's using half the power. Look at the numbers, don't listen to the narrator. LOL this is pathetic.
soo basically turbo boost on = more power = unstable fps = high temperature. turbo boost off = less power = stable fps (sometimes higher) = low temperature. By logic = cool temperature = longer life for ur machine thanks i will keep this turbo boost off permanently lol 🤣
Watch the video again. In cyberpunk OFF outperforms while using 5w less. In Hitman 3 it outperforms Massively. In ToTK it loses, but it's consuming HALF the power. What am I missing?!

Bullshit! CPU Boost OFF outperforms in your video. That's what you said. And it did it using less watts. Same with Hitman 3. Bro. You are WRONG! Watch your own videos.

Again, it's like you didn't look at your own results. The final tally suggests Boost off uses less power and performs better, with the exception of emulation. Am I wrong?
Uses the exact same power. Final tally shows that in hitman when cpu limited and totk cpu limited you will save power in these situations. I still have all the results.

Now that you've finished making a fool of yourself, have a good look at yourself and ask why you care about trying to prove you are right when you are indefensibly wrong.
Nothing but crickets now, eh pal?
I plan to get the ally so this is helpful as always ❤️
There was one instance in gears 5 where it did but that was the only one in my testing
Edit: I did do full testing and have all the results.
Awesome video! Thanks for this info definitely something to try out for some games I play
Personally I keep it on but did consider turning it off for the sake of battery life...this video settled the question as to how much real-time battery life I would be gaining at the expense of potentially lower quality gameplay? 5-10% more battery life is not a world changer in comparison to 50 mins of lower quality gameplay.
Exactly. And like I said, in these cases where you would notice a difference, you would likely be in or near a plug.
@@WinDeckTech subscribed.
I still say there's more reasons for it to be on. The 5 degrees difference won't give you any meaningful performance boost
@@NameForgotten1 lmfao you're still on about this.
They did not perform better nor did it "use less power"

I don't know who taught you numbers and margin of error, however it did not perform anywhere better.
Then please explain to me how using your settings I got better results than you (the exact same 41 avg) boot cpu boost on and off.

can verify that with CPU boot off, the cpu will still boost up to about 4000 when it detects a demand.
with the cpu boost on, the cpu usually sits at 4500-5000 and eats up battery stupid fast.
Doing what workload? Are you sure it's disabled in all of your modes?
It shouldn't be boosting up to 4GHz if it's Off**

It would be cool if Asus limited to cpu frequency with a bios update, disabling Turbo Boost limits it to 3.3ghz, they could instead cap it to 4ghz, so it would be enough for cpu demanding games, but not too much like the current 5ghz
The best course of action is to take control of it yourself with handheld companion or g helper

What were the results in MW2? What about the other settings also? I dont recall you mentioning the efficient profile later in the video

Nice comparison! Thank you sir!
Not a problem! Thanks for the comment!
They are CPU hungry and you will get much worse perf with it turned off
Thanks this video is a huge timesaver!
Glad I could help!
Another fantastic video, thank you!
Thanks for the comment!
Thank you for the guidance, great video.
No problem! Thank you:)
Will do, I plan on retesting it on a game-by-game basis. However I would still recommend you use auto tdp or handheld companion to limit speeds.
Great video, thanks for the info.
Loving all these settings test videos. Anyway you can show the best settings/emulator for TOTK for Switch ?
I do have a vid already, however I'll make a new one later this week.
Especially in cyberpunk you had a Lower tdp and temp at Same Performance
Thank you very useful :) subscribed
No problem, in further testing if you are limiting your fps you will save power. But if you are playing unlocked you will see no difference. Another video will be coming this week
I have it turned off. Everything i play runs the same and cooler. If i ever need it, it's easy to turn on again.
That's the beauty of it. You can switch it out on the fly.
Help would be appreciated
a TOTK confing video would be nice

Win deck how can I fix my ROG ally left controller? It won’t move left/right…
At all?
Try flipping through gamepad mode and desktop. Then try turning the embedded controller on and off.
If all else fails re-download all of the ROG Ally drivers from their site. Namely the software stuff.
What is better for heat sir? Boost on or off? I play 30fps most of the time at 15 watts. I do custom fan curve at 50% in like 50°c
I just leave it on with a custom fan curve. Even using the third preset fan gave us good temps. 60-75
well thank you. i just turned it back on
No problem!
I dont get it. Why is the ally boosting gpu clocks over 1k with coi boost on but on off it stays locked 800?
In which case? It shouldn't be.
I've tested this in re4, Forza, gears, cod at different tdp levels. The GPU should be allowed to boost normally, if not "slightly" higher if we are cpu bound.
@@WinDeckTech yeah my bad, I was watching the totk footage the GPU has constant higher clock
@@carlopanarelli7798 no problem! I know I could have explained the clocks better. But essentially in a cpu bound situation, such as TOTK or hitman 3 of will strangle the tdp because it can't go past 3.3
But then the CPU boost off can be a problem also for the GPU at times..
Its changing back to aggressive automatically after restart. What I can do?
It shouldn't be, but you can use Asus launcher now to control it
Thanks for the video. I am one of those mad lad who use the Ally as a PC (upgrade to Win11 Pro so that I can RDP into it). After the CPU Boost off I can clearly feel it becomes less responsive with Office app with it called for CPU heavy taskes. This video confirmed my suspicions.
You psycho haha. I have a video coming out in about 20 mins in which I used it to make an entire video, no keyboard and mouse haha
what if i already disabled CPU boost before by editing the regedit to 2 and change power plan to disabled? if i want to re-enable, do i just switch power plan to aggressive or i can just edit regedit back to 1?
Nah you can just switch it back to aggressive. Just verify in all of your power plans, and plugged in, that it is switched to aggressive. If you only did it once, you likely have some modes that were boosting still
This guy is wrong.. Watch the video. CPU Boost off outperforms in the video in Cyberpunk AND Hitman 3. It loses in ToTK but it's running at close to half the wattage.
@@NameForgotten1you're simply the best!
here the difference it's not big but in other videos i see a higher bump , maybe asus did improve meanwhile
great video
I was on the fence about it, On or Off...
I tried off recently and the games I tried (old stuff) didn't seem to suffer from it, but In armory crate or windows, the cpu goes really low and It feels a bit sluggish to operate
And for the price we paid for the device, we might aswell use it to it's full power!
thanks for this video!
That's what I'm thinking exactly. The little bit of boost GPU performance just isn't worth it in my opinion.
Edit:
Mind you only switch ROMs, so the cpu is clocking up to 4+GHz
Just spoke to this individual, from speaking with him I can confirm he has no idea what he is talking about and when confronted with better results, using his provided settings. Both with the cpu boost on and off. He circled back to how my tdp was different in the cyberpunk comparison.
Even after retesting and giving him evidence he still fails to see where he is wrong.
Im that guy, and this video actually shows us how wonky the power differentials are. CPU Boost OFF wins in Cyberpunk and Hitman3, and loses in ToTK while running at HALF the wattage.
@@NameForgotten1didn't deny you were wrong though!

Thanks for leaving a comment :)
I mainly play emulators on my rog. Actually it’s probably only emulators I play on my rog 😂 and I have always got it docked to my tv. So it’s always connected to power.
So, would having the cpu boost benefit me? As emulators are cpu heavy aren’t they.
An easy way to disable Turbo Boost on Intel processors is to set the Maximum processor state to 99%. Don't know if it works with AMD CPU.
I just used that as a visual representation of boost on/off. I know theirs works are a touch different however the idea is the same.
I went to see I don't have the boost mode
Here's what I gots (aggresive vs off, fps/temp):
[Turbo, 1080p, Med, 4GB VRAM]
GR Wildlands: Agg=45.41/95°, Off=46.15/95°
Immortal Fenyx: Agg=43, Off=43/95°
Dirt 5: Agg=48.2/79°, Off=50.0/80°
Shadow of TR: Agg=40/79°, Off=40/80°
Good to know thanks for the info.
I imagine the battery life savings, and fan noise reduction on a laptop would be worthwhile however I didn't see a significant drop in temps in my testing either. The only time we dropped temps and fan noise was when we were cpu limited, like in TOTK.
Edit:
Same with your results, not much difference
Guess back into registry to reenable boost
Don't need to reg edit. Just go into power controls it's still there
@@WinDeckTech realized that after I posted. Thanks for the great content.

@@NameForgotten1 you're the best!
So.. on or off ?
On, in my opinion.
Boost off! Thanks.
Idk man my system runs cooler and better seems like with it off. The temps spiking up just doesn’t justify the small gain on some games.
Only saves 7min of battery life and in demanding games like Avatar you need as much CPU power as possible. Not worth it
is cpu boost on by stock?
Yup
@@WinDeckTech thanks
soo basically
turbo boost on = more power = unstable fps = high temperature.
turbo boost off = less power = stable fps (sometimes higher) = low temperature.
