    Ah, memories. Xmas 1967 I got my very first guitar, a 1960s straight from the catalogue Sears and Roebuck Silvertone acoustic. It was a POS guitar that I thought was great and which I enthusiastically played until I figured out House of the Rising Sun. I remember a few of my friends and I formed a band that lasted well into the first rehearsal session before breaking up. And then? The guitar became a forgotten relic. Probably worth a penny or two today. And I eventually got around to picking up the guitar again....50 years later. Thanks for the trip down nostalgia alley. Cheers....

      Todd Roy yeah but my point is that Danelectro, a cool New Jersey based guitar manufacturer from the ‘50s & ‘60s, made the Silvertones; ‘Danos’ were known for their lipstick pickups

      True, this one is Danelectro, and it sounds fantastic at a budget price. However, Silvertones were made by several companies in the 60s. In the 60s, you could buy Silvertones made by either Danelectro, Kay, or Harmony. They're all "cheap sounding," but in their own unique and good ways.

I knew this thing was going to be unique regardless of all the people saying it’s cheap or trash. I know that it depends mostly on the player but I did listen to a lot of your great demos and this is still my favorite tone so far.

    I bought this guitar with the amp in the case in 2005. It was in a shop in Blue Ridge, GA. I only paid $100. Non polarized plug will shock you in to playing some blues. The fuse lit up in the case amp though. I’ll never forget that sound with the lipstick pickup and the amp buzzzzzzz.

  • @davidkieltyka9
    @davidkieltyka9 4 года назад +2

    I’ve got this same model, with the amp-in-case, along with its longer scale red sparkle sibling…also with an amp-in-case. Both are great players.
    Danelectros (this one was sold by Sears using their Silvertone brand) were made with inexpensive components but the quality of manufacture was really good. Once you figure out the neck tilt adjuster you can set ‘em up to play super fast and easy.

      They're also cheap to buy, even in good shape, considering it's a 55+ year old guitar. Sure, it's made with a poplar neck and a pine body that's chambered, but this beast is a good one, Just be wary to not put strings on it that are too thick at too high of a tuning, because these have no adjustable truss rod. They have a metal rod in them that holds the neck down good, but these aren't the best for thick strings unless you tune down.

  • @khkartc
    @khkartc 4 года назад +1

    The problem was that kids would get their Silvertone guitars home and they wouldn’t be set up correctly, so they generally had high string action and poor intonation. Not to mention the fact that the amp in the case sounded like it was under water. Judging from the photos in the booklets accompanying the “Back From the Grave” series, however, Silvertone amplifiers were a garage-band favorite in the 60s.

  • @101Volts
    @101Volts 2 года назад

    If anyone here wants to buy one of these, try it first. I like mine, but these aren't your typical Fender type of guitar; they're a bit finicky, but IMHO, they're fun and worth the time.
    That said; they do _not_ have adjustable truss rods, so that might limit your ability to choose thicker strings a bit. The headstock's the worst thing I've seen for tuning stability in my whole life, the tailpiece is cheap and I dislike the saddle on it, but I still wouldn't go much farther than how it is in stock form; I just want to take a new saddle, and cut it up so I can intonate the strings. Oh, and put a wedge of wood under the bridge to stop the bridge from collapsing.
    I don't have a pickup in mine yet (I bought it in rough but solid condition, in pieces,) so I can't comment on its electric tone. I love thin strings in it, though, since they sound like a rubber band guitar; that's perfection for what this guitar was sold for, but I mean that in a complimentary way.

    Never mind the reverb on your petal board. Crank the fender reverb on the amp

    Knew a classmate in college that had a Dano dc-59 and some of the pedals... I almost got myself the 3 pickup model with the "blow" switch (all 3 pickups direct out), but ended up having to spend the cash on fixing my amp. Hmm... (checks reverb and hopes the wife won't say, "another guitar?")

    Hey lovely guitar and playing, I am thinking to get one here in Europe, what is a razonable price for the guitar? Here in Germany there is one with amp-case for 900€ !!! Is this guitar really worth the money 💸??? Thanks in advance!

      These guitars are fun, I have one (with no electric pickup, yet) but they were very cheap. You have no adjustable truss rod in one (so you may be limited in string gauges,) they are very light, and they were made with cheap wood _and_ Masonite. If you would like one, you should play it first and see and hear. Their construction is unlike many other designs of instruments.
      I like mine, though. Although the body is a frame and block of Pine wood, Glue, and Masonite on the top and back holding the instrument together, and the neck is made of Poplar and the fretboard Brazilian Rosewood, and even though the tailpiece / bridge is very cheap and impossible to intonate properly without making a new one with a multi-piece saddle, even though the headstock is one of the worst I've ever seen because of string angles at the nut, it is still a fun guitar worth my attention. I am not being sarcastic, I do enjoy mine, though I don't think many of the parts are original to each other.

      @@101Volts thank you! I got one a couple of months ago in Berlin for half of the price I have mentioned before and I am very happy. Loads of fun to play! Of course there are some issues with the entonation and the sounds that you can get out of this guitar are very limited but for me is just fun and I enjoy very much playing with this beautiful thing! Thänks a lot for your comment!

      @@javierparravillegas9535 You're welcome. Glad hearing it worked out for you. Since I wrote my comment, I took my non-original saddle, and I cut it into 3 pieces. This way, I can intonate the strings fairly accurately; the saddles are now more like the Telecaster 3 Saddle Style. They don't fall off, either. The string tension holds them in place, but it would still be better if I had a way to attach them. Otherwise, every time I want to re-string the guitar, the saddles could come off, or they could be put in the wrong place.

      @@101Volts Thänks man! That’s the point! Meanwhile I‘ve got one for a good price. The tuners position and the materials of this guitar are rather weird and not very well build. Also I have the feeling they spared as much as they could building it! If they could save money putting one screw less, they did it!
      So the build quality of this guitar is not quite good.
      About the intonation I hear there are spots where is not right so what you did with the brigde might help. Don’t get me wrong, I actually enjoy the guitar and it has for sure a vibe, it’s very light and easy to play. Thanks again man and talk to you soon, grreetings, Javi

    Can this guitar be played without an amp like many semi hollows? Is it loud enough?
    Thank you

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts 2 года назад

      Yes, you can play it like a semi-hollow. It is loud enough to play at home or with a few friends, but I can't say it's as loud as a typical acoustic. Also, these do not have adjustable truss rods, so you can't really put whatever thick strings on that you'd like and then adjust the neck relief as you want it, if you like thick strings. These old 1950s and 1960s Danelectro-built models are probably best off with light strings, nothing thicker than 10s, unless you tune lower than E standard.
