    Kermit Weeks demos the Fieseler Storch at Fantasy of Flight!
    Info from Fantasy of Flight web site:
    Storch means "stork" in English. This aircraft was designed by Fieseler in 1935 as a slow flying liaison aircraft. With its high-lift wings and fixed slots, it can take-off and land in less than 200 feet and has a stall speed less than 25 mph. It proved its worth throughout World War II, and over 4000 were ultimately built. Used on all fronts, its engine had a tendency to overheat, and the side cowls were generally left off in hot climates.
    This aircraft was involved in many significant events during World War II. Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, "The Desert Fox," flew in one throughout the North African Campaign, landing in troubled spots everywhere along the front lines. It was a Storch that rescued Italian dictator Mussolini from a hotel atop a mountain peak after Italian partisans captured him toward the end of the war. It was a Storch that transported the bomb that was used in the attempt on Hitler's life in July of 1944. Less than a year later, during the final days of the war in Europe, famous German female test-pilot Hanna Reitsch flew a Storch into the heart of besieged Berlin. She landed near the Brandenburg Gate to get last minute instructions from Hitler.
    Kermit's Comments;
    When an aircraft flies slower and slower, the angle of the wing to the air must increase to support the weight of the aircraft. At a certain angle, the air flowing smoothly over the top of the wing will normally become turbulent, and the aircraft will stall. The fixed slot on the front of the Storch's wing has a larger opening than exit, which allows more and more air to be forced over the top of the wing as its angle increases. This air is accelerated over the top of the wing and allows this wing to fly at a much higher angle before stalling, therefore, allowing a slower speed than normally would be possible. As the flaps are lowered on this aircraft, the ailerons begin to droop down at about half the rate the flaps do. This helps create more lift at slow speed while still allowing the pilot plenty of control.
    Specifications:
    Year Built - 1937

    Cruise Speed - 93 mph
    Gross Weight - 2,904 lbs

    a marvelous piece of design -it did its job brilliantly and took a lot of bad field punishment

    I believe Mussolini was flown out of a mountain retreat by the Storch, after being rescued by German paratroopers.

    Excellent camera work from someone who knew what he/she was doing.
    The incredible Storch doesn't look out of place today...ok, tiring to fly but with minimal flying aids, hey!....what's to go wrong?

      Firebrand55 I think this plane suffered from overheating in warmer climates....or at least Kermits did. Not sure though but I think I remember someone at Fantasy of Flight saying that.

      @leifvejby8023 8 лет назад

      +Xrm150 It did in fact suffer from overheating, but the pilot's notes had a remedy against - seek out a thermal and throttle back.

      +Firebrand55 - The camera work is brilliant. I was lucky enough to see one of these things several years ago. Pointing into a head wind, the Storch came to a near hover but didn't fall out of the sky.

      +pervertt I saw a Storch, in Germany (Gelnhausen) circa 1968. I was amazed how SLOW the plane was flying, when it landed! The Gelnhausen Airfield was a Glider Port (one end), and had Sport Parachuting at the other end. :) I was on the Jumper end. Stationed at Wiesbaden Air Base (USAF), 1968 -1972. ... Kermit: why not show the STOL characteristics the plane is famous for in a landing and a takeoff?

    That bird could take off in a stiff breeze without motor assist.

    I'm just thinking, isn't the "ch" dipthong pronounced as a hard "k" in German?
    So the airplane and the bird would both be pronounced as "Stork" in German as well as English?

  • @Lordcirdan

    Should be pronounced STORK !!!

    It's too bad that such an experienced pilot yells "clear" in instant before hitting the starter. He's not really clearing the area at all but letting anyone in the prop arc know that they are about to be killed. Five seconds may give someone a chance to move.

    • @fenderplayer946
      @fenderplayer946 9 лет назад +3

      kyqx if you listen closely you can hear a liney or mechanic reply with the same word to confirm that the area is clear

    Gee thanks Kermit, after seeing this amazing demo I had to go and add ANOTHER RC model to my collection :-) Not as good as the the real thing, but unfortunately we don't have a Storch to see in New Zealand.

    What a lovely video about one of the best aircraft ever built! The Fe 156 did everything that it was designed to do, and did it extremely well. A stalling speed of 25 mph is unbelievable. What a design! Kermit Weeks is an EXTREMELY fortunate man to fly one of these.

    Doesn't seem like he does much to emphasize the real strengths of the aircraft, it's ability to make very short takeoffs and landings. I mean, they're pretty short, but the plane can do better. Maybe he's trying to keep the safety margin high, because it's a rare aircraft? Also, Kermit, get a new announcer: I could hardly stand to listen to that guy babbling. Didn't seem like he actually knew anything about the aircraft, and was just talking because it was his job to talk while the aircraft flew.

    In 1946 an USAF plane crashed in the swiss Alpes. The Swiss army started a rescue operation for the injured pilot and other american passengers with a Fieseler Storch, because only this plane was capable to land and take off on a glacier under such alpine condition.

    The Storch was also used as ambulance plane in battlefield areas.

    Yes they do remove the panels to keep the engine cool. But as far as the alcohol goes I don't know about that. I would imagine that if it ran on alcohol the engine would reach critical temp FAST.

    These planes worked as kind of "helicopters" in the second world war.
    They where needed to start and land on rough and short field airports. Obviously this specific role of the Fiesler Storch is not understood today.

    I had to shut it off as soon as the announcer pronounced it "storch". The only "storch" pronounced "storch" is actor Larry Storch.

    The commentary is always interesting. So much so that it is a shame that with the editing done for the clip some of the commentary is lost therefore you lose some of the story. Great video otherwise, thanks.

    • @justforever96
      @justforever96 8 лет назад +1

      I thought the commentator sucked; he didn't sound like he knew anything about the aircraft at all and was just making up stuff to fill in the time. And he was a little insulting when he was demanding that the audience put their hands up to say that they would come back again: if they didn't like the place, or simply honestly have no real intention of ever returning, you aren't going to convince them by demanding that they declare they will, or to indicate that they liked it when they didn't.

    thank you very much for the wonderful presentation of our stork, which hatched from its egg in kassel in 1936. it is available in a wide variety of variants and also in original ones. here in kassel there is a community that cares for the little bird. among other things, a certified pilot who restores the original stork from 1943 and continues to fly it. get in touch with me, I will organize the contact.
