  • It was great to finally play Western Gailes Golf Club again. This course is a true links test and I could not recommend it more in you are planning a golf trip to Ayrshire.
Western Gailes is stunning and quickly became one of my favourite courses I have ever played. The course has recently gone through some changes with fairway bunkers being naturalised and some greens being reshaped.

One of the first courses I played on my maiden voyage to Scotland in 2010. That was a month long trip with all the big hitters in Scottish Links Golf (Old, Dornoch, Royal Aberdeen, Kingsbarns, Carnoustie, pre-Trump Turnberry) and for overall golf experience this was right at the top, just behind the experience of playing The Old. Course was great, I had 72 year old Tommy (72 in 2010) on my bag, he gave me an impromptu lesson on how to hit the ball on the ground as he was frustrated at this American hitting the ball up into the wind and letting the it get blown and thrown all over the place. Then at the end of our round, our day ticket included lunch in the clubhouse overlooking the course. It was exactly what I thought Scottish golf should be. Great course, welcoming staff and membership, great old Scottish caddie with a 'no bullshit' lesson telling me if I was going to spend a month playing golf in Scotland I better learn to hit the ball on the ground and giving me a lesson on the spot, and a wonderful lunch after. To this day one of my best memories of that month long wander around the links of Scotland. Thanks for the video, and GREAT round in that wind. Love your content. Next trip to Scotland is in just a few weeks, bringing some first timers to Fife for a week and hitting all their 'bucket list courses' - sadly no hidden gems like Western Gailes on this trip!

My fave as well. Only played it once - shot 78 (which was good for me on a calm day) in a howling gale. I remember my caddie handing me a 3 iron on the par 3 15th and me laughing at him. He refused to give me anythjng else so I hit it. Knocked it to about three feet! Wonderful day. And, IMHO, one of the top five logos in all of golfdom!

Played it once in some of the worst conditions I’ve every played in - horizontal rain and gusts reaching 40mph, waterproofs no longer waterproof before the 1st tee. Still to this day one of the biggest smiles I’ve had coming off the 18th green. Such a superb course. That homeward stretch into the wind is so tough. Great shooting!

Superb. Love your enthusiasm and those moments when a putt just misses or the ones that drop. Well done

Hey Rach, enjoyed that. Can’t get over how bent over your putting posture is. What’s the thinking behind that?

The entire video looks like it was put together by the Scotting Tourism Council: makes me want to hop a plane and go play there now. Great video, thanks!

What sort of strategies work best for you when playing in such challenging conditions? Some of my most memorable shots have come from being "creative" in wind
Also, "McQueen on the Green" , just showing your reactions to putts would be an absolute banger 🤣🤣🤣

Any chance of shot-tracer, its so difficult to enjoy the shots when you just cant see them, regards

I will do my best to get some shot tracer on future vlogs. It's a lot of editing and I'm also big on pace of play. Fingers crossed I can include some soon. ☺️ hope you still enjoyed the video!

If the hole was half an inch bigger, 5 under par. Great round!
