- My obsession with rear stabs continues. Having fallen in love with the progressive range a long time ago, I was reluctant to give much of my foil time over to the skinnies, and as such I think my bias prevented me from giving them a fair go when I was first given them to test. However, despite my predisposition towards the progressive range, I realised that I was actually beginning to choose a skinny over a progressive on the odd occasion. I immediately immersed myself in the skinny range as often as I could to see what was going on - and lo and behold, a new obsession has begun - not that my love for the P's has faded, I've simply realised that there's enough love in my heart for the skinnies as well as the progressives!
For a change I've been quite brief - this video is just under 12 minutes of me describing the performance characteristics of these two rear ranges, when and why I use each one, and just how extreme they go.

Hi Dominic, another great review, thank you for that, i tested today the SpitFire 960 behind a leisure boat with a small wake and it’s amazing how easy it carves. What stab would you recommend? A progressive or skinny?
They both work very well with the spitfires so it depends what style you prefer. The progressives are very good at letting you change direction super quick, while the skinnies are super stable when carving at speed
Since stabs are designed to create a "downward" force to counteract the momentum created by front wing, shouldn't a more "lifty" stab create more downward force and thus impact gliding performance negatively?
Yes, that’s why it’s important to use the correct stab to balance your front foil, BUT there is quite a range that you can work between, so you can fine tune the feel of your setup by selecting stabs within that range
How does the Skinny 362/50 compare with the Speed 420/60?

For good waves would the progressive or skinny be better. Progressive is lower aspect so better turning and more low end. Progressive is like spitfire and skinny is like art pro..which means if u want to add some glide and top end at the expense of low end go for skinny. And vice versa, does that make sense Dom?
That makes perfect sense. The skinnies will calm down the spitfires roll axis and the progressives will allow you to take full advantage of their maneuverability

I'm a flat water pumper and I did not like the skinny 365/55 because it slow me down too much and also does not unlock enough speed. the 362/50 is my go to on flat water with every wings now.
Yeah, the skinny 45 is actually my preferred stab for flat water pumping, but that’s because I’m not really trying to pump to achieve the longest distance, I’m happy to sacrifice a bit more effort for the extra fun factor. The point I was trying to make about the 55 is that I think it’s the best choice for most people if they want to pump for the longest distance possible as it requires the least amount of effort to pump it out of all the skinnies
@@dominichoskyns9091 Sure, but I rather use a progressive 425 or 400 than the skinny 365/55, in my taste... I feel that skinny more tirering and not deliver enough speed for the amount of lift it get back. But great review about your testing. 🙂
@@yvonvite_AXIS interesting comment..the 55 is same cm size as 325p but u still go for 50, which means the skinny is just a ha version of the progressive
@@apricotscrub Yes, something like that... But it's just in use in flat water or very tiny waves conditions... We don't have a lot of wind around here unfortunately. Maybe the 55 works better in bigger waves conditions...
Great review, but left me so confused I need your expertise Dominic, I am 85kg and usually ride HPS 1050/425P I have a HPS 880 that i chuck on the front on windy days. I want more glide, I am not into serious snappy wave turns but like to catch swell and chop. Last session with the 1050/425P and 8m, I felt I maxed out the foil, just couldn't get any faster. I am thinking about buying one new rear stab to compliment both foils. What do you recommend a Skinny and what size would you go for?
I’d recommend the 365 / 55 skinny.
The reason is that it’s faster and has better glide than the p425 but it’s still super stable
So the skinny is basically a smaller series of the 460 pump rear
They have a different foil section to the 460 v2 but I suppose you could look at them like that in terms of glide and speed, but it feels different to turn compared to the skinnies. I would say it’s half way between the progressives and the skinnies in terms of its performance characteristics
Are the Skinnies any good with the HPS foils?
I only used the skinnies with the HPS 1050, and it made a slight increase to its speed and glide. Essentially the skinnies will give a bit more glide to any foil you use them with. The speed depends what stab you are using at the moment, but they will also be faster than any stab from the p350 and bigger

It totally depends on what style you prefer. They are both surfy but in different ways. You can compare the progressives to a short board style (tight cut backs) and the skinnies are more like a long board style (big carves)

Sorry, I should have made that clearer. It’s the same principal for how I choose between them for downwinding - it depends on the conditions and what I want to do, so if i want the extra speed and glide I’ll use the skinnies, and if I want to focus on turning then I’ll use the progressives
Wait, so you wouldn't use the 460 v2 pump for flat water pumping?
I would and still do occasionally use the 460v2 for flat water pumping, but this is a comparison of the progressive and skinny rear stabs. I mostly prefer pumping faster foils now which all work better with faster rears
@@dominichoskyns9091 So you'd never pair the v2 pump with a ART, ARTPRO or Spitfire wing? Would you say it's exclusively for the PNG series then?
What do you consider the easiest to pump rear wing is for the 1201 on flat water dock starts?
@@slappysurf yes, I would only use the 460v2 with the big PNG foils, but that’s my personal opinion, others might disagree.
IMO the best rear stab for pumping the 1201 on flat water is the skinny 55
@@dominichoskyns9091 interesting, the Progressive 450 and Skinny 55 don’t seem that different than the pump 460. I just picked up a 1201 and I got a skinny 45 for normal use and a pump 460 for docks, sounds like I made the wrong call.
@@slappysurf the p450 is a lot thicker and very slow. The skinny 55 is the fastest, which is why I prefer it with the 1201. Using a draggy rear kills its glide. The 460v2 is somewhere in the middle for speed but bear in mind they all have different foil sections and the skinny also has a shorter wingspan and much shorter chord
