lovely William Butler Yeats poem, sublime rendering ever. With that music and that angelic voice I almost can see the willows (saileach, in Irish) garden, and the lovers in it.
Nearly 20 years since he performed this song in 2005 at the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London and nobody since has bettered his performance. 6,000 people in the audience stunned by his beautiful voice. Simply beautiful.
Makes a song which has a sting in the tail into easy listening for softies. The harmonisation in Britten's arrangement, with the sudden aching bitter-sweet disonant pang, capture the Yeat's words so far better

Orchestration much too heavy for what is a very sad, moving song about how defeat can be snatched from the jaws of victory. All it needed was Andreas and a pianist to make a reference performance of a moving song.

Superb rendition but perhaps a little to much orchestration.
Scholl is marvelous, but too much orchestration for me. I prefer a sparer version.
