This is the most moving and convincing version that I know of such a famous piece. The fact that a sincere Catholic like Monterverdi succeeded in making those two absolute pagan monsters appealing tells a lot about his musical genius.

Magnificent singing of magnificent music. I have no opinion of the staging. I am not 'tuned in' to stagings like this.

@4444marla, the answer is simple; this is make-believe, not reality.
In the world of fantasy, anything can happen; gods can exist, characters can have supernatural powers, and... people can pass each other without seeing each other.
The people who lived during the baroque had no problems with understanding these theatrical concepts of artistic projection. Our modern minds are not used to that anymore. We often confuse fantasy with reality.

La más bella versión para mi, de las muchas que conozco, es la de Jaroussky y Nuria Rial con la Arpeggiata

I am aware of what you said and stage myself in that manner when it works. I did not find that it worked. That is my opinion.

Lovely singing but weird staging. Why do they cross and then come bcak, always as if they don't even see each other until the end. Is that all that the stage director could think of, contrary motion? Please.

+Clemens Kindermann The part of Nero was written for a castrati in order to probably stage this piece without changing the music completely destroying the harmonies, a woman has to play Nero as the vocal range is closer to that of a castrati.

Zach Menefee I know that it was written for a castrato, but there are plenty of good counter tenors out there, who have the necessary chest volume for the role.
