Gyrocompa Not typically. At the time this was originally written, Nero’s role would have sung by a castrati. Fortunately, that particular practice has died out , and the role is typically given to a counter tenor. Occasionally, certain opera/theater companies will turn Nero into a trouser role, but if they have the necessary talent available it’s meant to be played by a man.
