Everybody, if you don't want to put a pickguard on your guitar, can I ask why you are watching this? The guitar comes with the pick guard uninstalled, so to put it on, you have to DRILL in it. It hurts, I know, but if you want a pick guard you have to do it, if you don't want to, then why the hell are you watching this video?
I'm watching, well skimming through really, barely that.. because I lost the screw which attached the plate to the bracket and I just bought a new screw so I'm just quickly having a look,
Never thought about using soap when starting a screw, or the felt pads. Great idea. I gave my LP a good polishing where the pick guard was going to be and then installed it. Good idea to remove it once in a while to clean and re-polish the body where the guard covers it. Good video.
Im really considering installing one on my 1960 tribute ... I like the way it looks with the pickguard, makes it look more of a les Paul than without it.
I have a Les Paul classic with a pickguard and a studio without. I'm thinking about adding a pickguard to the studio. Les Pauls without pickguards just look wrong to me.
just recently bought a les Paul without a pickgaurd and im thinking the same thing. I just want to know if I should just buy one and do it by myself or If I should send it somewhere to have them put it on, I don't know if I trust myself with such a beautiful guitar😂
My Gibson les paul Traditional, and Gibson les paul standard both came with the pickguard in the case, but not installed.People talk about it being “Wrong” to install the pickguard, because you are drilling holes in the guitar.I agree..but also feel that the les paul “Needs the pickguard on” so i figured..would i rather have the guitar with the pickguard on,and loving the way it looks, or would i rather not drilling the two holes, but having the guitar eventually look like Willy nelsons trigger...a patch of paint or even wood worn off where my hand would keep grazing the guitar
I don’t know about you but it’s kinda hard to even hit the pick on the guitar without the pickguard while strumming Just don’t go crazy like a bastard on your strumming and you should not even need a guard
Nice video! The only things I do differently are I always use a little countersink to remove the finish around the drilled holes. You risk popping the finish off without it that teensy little chamfer. The other thing is to jack up the bracket a bit on the side of the guitar so the little screw through the pickguard is not in contact with the top. That prevents a ding in the finish if you bump the front of the pickguard.
Just bought my first LP Traditional a month ago. I'll install the pick guard when the body is scratched to hell from wild strumming I want hide it. Yes it's a tool, but a high-end LP is also a work of art IMO. Good video and the felt pad is a great idea. Just not ready to attack my LP with my Makita yet. :^)
Nkce work. I have a 91 Gibson LP classic that came with the pick guard but I took it off as a teenager because I thought it looked better without it. I actually like them both ways now. I’m about to buy a flamed top 2016 that doesn’t have a guard but I have seen some in this finish (desert burst) and I think it looks great with the guard. Either way, it’s two very small holes. My 91 has those little holes and it doesn’t bother me in the least. Nice job
CR Laurence has 2 sided tape for shower parts that's incredibly strong. It's similar to those sticky dots you can buy for sticking papers together but stronger. And it's not permanent. But being designed for wet applications..it's very durable. They have rolls of 1/4" and 1/2" wide tape. They're both probably about 1/16" thick. I guarantee it would work! You'd probably have to create a flat under the screw that holds the bracket on and have a piece of tape there as well as up near the neck and on the side where the bracket mounts near the bottom of the binding. I'm not sure if it would alter the finish over time. I do know it doesn't require holes to be drilled in your beautiful instrument!
I enjoy the comments from people who think drilling two small holes in the guitar, as was designed to be done by Gibson, is somehow ruining a guitar, but making ten thousand pick scrapes over the surface where the pickguard would have been is not going to cause wear a lot more difficult to repair than filling and color matching two small screw holes if you ever changed your mind.
I've been around guitars most my life and I'm 47yrs old. Owned a few les Paul's in my time. Some with and some without pickguards. And some I took off to see how it looked. But I have a esp snowwhite iron cross James hetfields signature guitar and it doesn't have the pickguard. So I ordered one. And just for shits and giggles watched your video of how to install it. And yesi feel the pain as I'm sure you did when you 1st put that drill to the wood. That hesitant feeling. But as ya say. If ya wanna pickguard it's gotta be done. Thanks for the vid.

My buddy has a '68 LP Custom Black Beauty that he bought new in 1968. I think that he said he paid $300 for it with case. In the mid 80's, he had a Floyd Rose installed, lol. He has no plans to ever sell it, but man, talk about ruining a classic!
My lp came with a very unique pickguard where its attached to the pickups and then there is just a felt nub touching the guitar body on the bottom of the pickguard which can't be seen from regular viewing angles. It's super cool that I have the option to take it off with no screw holes. Although I think it looks alot better on
this is how pick gaurds are installed on Les Pauls... so all the nay sayers, you don't have a clue..it's SUPPOSED to go on the guitar... Slash started all the hate LOL....... I personally like it way better with the pickgaurd on, it looks like its supposed to look.

I have read most of the comments on this thread. I want to thank you for showing us properly how to install a pickguard on a Gibson. It retails for right now a little bit over $9,000 and going up! this video was very educational when wanting to install the triple pickguard I myself personally don't see a Les Paul being a Les Paul without a pickguard. It all comes down to yourself do you want this on your guitar this isn't something that you just up and decide to sell! If you're going to spend what most custom Les Paul's cost nine times out of 10 it's going to become a family heirloom. So, be happy! If it makes you feel better to put the pickguard on then do it! It's not like you're going to get rid of it and if you do so what is a Gibson! I don't think anyone's going to look at it any differently because it has a pickguard on it. Absolutely great video!
Can someone list the factory screw sizes for Gibson and Epiphone pickguard and bracket? I noticed at Guitar Center and Sam Ash stores that the Epiphone screw heads were flatter and smaller in diameter than the screws on Gibson guitars.

Even though mine's only a new Epiphone Les Paul Plustop Pro ($599) I'm still not feeling great about drilling holes in it. I know it'll be fine, I've drilled holes for strap buttons, tuners, truss rod covers, etc. on quite a few guitars and never had a problem. Still, this will be the one time I screw up and drill in the wrong place or break the bit off and can't get it out on the top of this really nice AAA flamed maple (veneer-LOL) top. Hello. Why you use that bracket for the pickguard? I saw some people installing it without any bracket. I want to install a pickguard on my Epiphone Les Paul and I do ot know wether to use a bracket or not. Honestly, I wouldn't like to drill that hole on the guitar side. I would prefer to have only the plastic plate, without the bracket. ruclips.net/video/FzIB9w8XI_U/видео.html
I might need to know how it's done correctly some day. Maybe if I get a job at a music shop, and a person comes in with a Les Paul and don't want to do the drilling because he/she's afraid to ruin the guitar.
I love my Les Paul, but let's be honest there are certain idiosincrasies in the design that are odd, like the headstock design, tuning issues and this insanity. I will never drill a damn hole into a flamed Maple top Les Paul. That's nuts.
Well, while the thought of drilling holes into a guitar may not seem right, if you buy one with a pickguard fitted, there is no difference, the holes would have been drilled already, so what is the difference. Now, Pickguard or no Pickguard, well for such a nice instrument that costs a decent packet of cash, I think I would want to protect it as well. If you aren't a mad arsed strummer, you may not need one, but if you like to get into it, you probably do need a guard. Protect your investment. The holes are small and are hidden and filled in once the screws are tightened. Just do it with care and you wont have a problem.... Oh and Mike, ease up on the soap dude, you only need to use it to tap the hole, once that's done no need to add more.
Dude, you need to take a hole saw to the bottom half opposite of the knobs. I wanna see all the holes drilled into the body for weight relief. Gibson isn't what they used to be. Richlite fretboard instead of ebony now days. Sad. Anyways, nice video.

I love my Les Paul, but let's be honest there are certain idiosincrasies in the design that are odd, like the headstock design, tuning issues and this insanity. I will never drill a damn hole into a flamed Maple top Les Paul. That's nuts.
I don't know. Drilling holes into my Les Paul is probably the last thing that would come to my mind.
