I was a ball boy at that championship game. It was such a great match, too bad it was over in straight sets. Sampras was definitely on top of his game at that stage, and it would have been hard for anyone to beat him at the time. I remember during the victory ceremony a women yelling out "I love you Pete" and Pete replying "I love you too babe", what a top bloke. Thank you for the fantastic memories 👍
@@yourkingishere9684 If you saw the matches in person instead of from the overhead angle on the TV then you wouldn't call it pushing. I agree that Tennis was much more enjoyable to watch in the 90s when there was much more variety with contrasting styles.
Pete played a great match showing very good tactics ( the way he used the backhand on the line and the slice are wonderful ) but Moyà played a very bad match making a lot of unforced errors and showing no intensity as if he believed that he couldn't win from the beginning.
Watch some Agassi highlights from the late 80s. Undreamt of angles. It’s not the string this just wasn’t much of a match. Sampras was a bulldozer and Moya wasn’t up to it in this match. Just a style of play and a weak final
i remembdr this boring and lopsided final. moya seemed overwhelmed by the occasion, didn't believe he could beat Sampras, and was embarrassed by his own playing. Body language very negative pretty much from the start.
Moya's too casual, he deserved to get thrashed. Showed no intensity, this is a Grand Slam final Carlos against the world number 1, yet your as slow as a snail out of the blocks? He would never of won anyway, his name will be forgotten in a few years, unlike Sampras who's legacy will endure the end of time.
Jake Ramzy Carlos was great player, got some great wins, but it’s unfair to compare him with Pete, one of the greatest player ever, here at his 20 and his first final against prime and healthy Sampras he hadn’t any chance anyway,so he did well reaching the final.
@@aleksthegreat4130 Yeah I'll give him credit for making the final, but his game is so flaky here it's a mystery how he wasn't defeated earlier. A truly forgettable and disappointing final performance, Pistol Pete was not even breaking a sweat
This match was 23 years ago, you think Moya would suddenly be forgotten? Plus he was #1 (and the first player from Spain to do so), a slam winner, a member of the champion Davis Cup team, a frequent member of the top 10, AND the current coach of Nadal.

Christian D. That would have been difficult for sampras because of federrer shot range . He may win 3 of 10 games against federrer . 7 times it would be fedrrer. But for sure nadal or djokovic have no chance against sampras on a fast court.
Just because he is better on pure fast tracks than Nadal or Djokovic doesn't mean they would have "no chance." No player is, or has ever been, the best on all surfaces. Federer is the closest thing to an all around game in terms of the GOAT candidates, but we have seen even he has had an Achilles' Heel at times in his career. What these GOAT discussions lack is any sort of nuance. Tennis is not an all or nothing proposition. Sometimes it's just, who is fitter, who is better on the given day, or any number of different factors. None of these guys were ever invincible, or undefeated. They all have head scratching losses. So to say one all time great would have no chance against another all time great is just silly.

Nice, can you be seen in the video?
The video quality is phenomenal. Usually, I can’t even see ball on these old matches. Bravo!
Both,Carlos Moya and Thomas Muster were beaten badly by Sampras in final and semifinal, great form by Pete.
Pete at his best! Wonderful serve & volley. Beautiful to watch that!!! This is REAL tennis!
REAL tennis =Aces and misstackes?
Real tennis is all court and shot making. Not serve and pussy
Definitely tennis at its finest. Worthless kids these days think pushing is fun to watch.

Correct. Now it's baseline boredom to the max.
thx for uploading

"...and I hope I'll see you next year. Hasta luego, Lucas" - Carlos Moyá
Man, Moya's clothes are like 10 sizes too big for him lol
suits his forehand
Mid 1990s to Mid 2000s sports clothes were absolutely ridiculous and way too baggy.
@@BurnsTennis I find it cool. Artists like Sampras and Federer playing with these clothes on were a beauty to watch.
@@user-cy6xl3vd3fI think that had nothing to do with their clothes and all to do with their playing styles
Watching Sampras play Tennis is like watching Senna drive an F1 car...
Sensational!
Great idea to show the winner in the thumbnail 👏
If you don’t know how a match in 1997 ended that’s your problem
😂And Moya should beat Sampras in a AO finals????
After this match Moya was saying he should have a better serve for his size but I didn't see that it improved much over his career
I'd say it did he developed a fairly solid serve , it was one the major strengths in his game
El Famoso " Hasta Luego, Lucas" de Moyá 😂😅🤪
ONE GETS THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT
The serve of Sampras was too much for a young Moya
Carlaca 1988 He was beaten in each aspect of the game, nice lesson by Pete
What! Moya younger than Pete? I thought Moya older than. I check google. Peter older than Moya 5 years old.
sampras was fast back then
Very sad. Becker in great shape did not loose against Moya. He lost against the heat days before!
“Sampras wearing a cap!” Fuck sake... :D
really 360?looks like HD😏
The baggy fashion of the 90’s doesn’t hold up! Sampras’ outfit looks oke though
Lol imagine if he wore the pink stuff Rafa does
classic
Those hats at the trophy presentation from the thumbnail. Just the goofiest look ever.
It's amazing how LINEAR the game was before pure Luxilon without all the angles...no wonder it was just serve and volley.

q aburrido q era el tenis
Moya solo hizo el ridiculo en esta final nada que ver con el nivel mostrado durante el torneo, Sampras ni se esforzó aqui
y hoy su pupilo obtuvo un resultado prácticamente idéntico

Tennis in slow motion compared to todays
Sampras would have beaten nadal on fast courts , lost to federrer on all courts if he played in the current generation.
He would have beaten Federer on indoor carpets and on the grass of the 90ies, as well as on fast hard courts.

prime sampras is much much better than prime federer. sampras beat all his rivals federer stinks against his.
j ton thats all great except for one thing. pete at his best is the only player in history who could beat anyone on anyday.
