to solve your lube problem on overdrive end in transfer case fill transfer completely full of oil for a few minutes then drain do this every 3 months or so it works
When I bought my S3 2.25d new in 1975....I quickly got one of the first fairy overdrives that had just come out.....made driving the landrover more bearable over the next 200.000mls. But in all those years it was a pain.....and it wore the end on my mainshaft just like the main shaft you have. So once I fitted my 200DI engine.....I quickly fitted 2 3.5 high ratio diffs.....give the same gearing in 4th gear as O/H high gear.....with out the whine or constant topping up with oil. TBH I was glad to see the back of my overdrive....I dont think the old 2.25d would have coped with 3.5diffs....but a petrol would. To me they are not worth the cost to re-build. Your undersize main shaft....could you not fit a speedy sleeve to it. I have a spare main shaft rear bearing housing....are there and measurements from it I can give you....I dont want to sell it.
New LT76 mainshafts are available, just need to know which suffix, I may have a spare PTO Cover ( Rear Mainshaft Support Cover) with internal support roller bearing) but will also require replacement gear & castellated nut & lock tab etc which were removed to fit the Overdrive.
I rebuilt a badly abused Fairey last autumn. Cost me about £400 for a replacement input gear (the one at the very back end) and lay shaft gear cluster, and was the last pair of a batch made in 2007. There seemed to be no others anywhere. I also used what seemed to be the last available clutch sleeve, which had been a returned but unused item from the excellent source of the bearings and service parts kit (GLF Classics). All told, the parts cost me over £700. Half the price of the Roverdrive now, but you also have to find a reparable unit to fix in the first place.
@@BritannicaRestorations, it depends on what you can find and the total price. Including buying the buggered unit, I now have a nearly new condition one for about £1k. They are being sold refurbished for about £1400 plus the VAT, and Roverdrives shot up in price to around £1800+VAT a few years ago. I suppose a lot depends on taxes and import costs and where you are. But if you want an overdrive on an old classic, like your SI, then a Roverdrive doesn’t really cut it. I have a Roverdrive on my 109, but that is anything but original or classic…
Hello from Denver. I have a series lll 109 exmod 12v. When I drive down the road the shift lever pops out of gear mostly when there isn’t a load on the gear box, it’s seems to do it more in second gear. For example, coasting down a hill it will pop out of gear. What is causing this problem? Thank you, John.
Hello from Greece, I really need your advise , because don't have this kind of experience. I have a series III and I am trying to fit the OD in the gear box. So, I removed the basics and when was time to put the OD in the main shaft, I realized that the diameter of shaft is larger than the Overdrive hole. Now I am trying to find out how I have to continue. Please any suggestions?? If I trim the main shaft as you said, it will work? Appreciate your feedback
It needs to be hardened and thin - JP took 0.020 off the shaft to save it However, if I can get hold of a cover I may be able to find a needle bearing to fit the machined shaft

I think they are going to get a Roamerdrive - from what I can see it does not need the bearing surface on the end of the shaft
Sleeve retainer can be used between bearing shells and undersized shafts. Just match the compound’s gap range in TDS to the gap in question.
Don't know if this would work, but a shop here in VT that turns crank shafts builds up with weld, than machines to speck.....

I think due to the cost of parts they are going to get a Roamerdrive new

C$2000 for a Roamerdrive - the old Overdrives are not worth fixing if there is any damage to the shafts or gears

I would not consider anything like that in my S1! Frightening to drive here as it is with the big trucks trying to pass you!
thanks Mike appreciate the info
Any time!

Could be bad synchros or detent springs are weak

It has been a long time since I did this video, but the mainshaft is constant, so there could be something wrong with the Overdrive?
Καλή τύχη!
Mike
Can you not put a sleeve on the end of the shaft?
It needs to be hardened and thin - JP took 0.020 off the shaft to save it
However, if I can get hold of a cover I may be able to find a needle bearing to fit the machined shaft
I think Speedi Sleeves are hardened. They’re made for this sort of circumstance.
What a dilemma. See if TAS in Italy has the shaft and output gear.
I think I have found the rear cover - after that I will see what the bearing size is
Yes the prices for some Land Rover parts are extortion….. price invention by a few.
For the cost of parts you can get a new Roamerdrive!
Does JP have the equipment for metal spraying and build it back up to dimension?
no
Can I inquire how much for a rover drive sent to Australia if you posted rover drive made in Canada great engineering
