  • In this video I take a closer look at Marine Court, an amazing Art Deco apartment building on the seafront at St Leonards On Sea, Hastings, East Sussex.
Built between 1936 and 1938, its architecture is heavily influenced by the ocean liner the Queen Mary and it looks like an enormous cruise ship.
Filmed using my Apple iPhone SE. Commentary by Ian M Bullock. Recorded on July 11 and July 12, 2021.

I live here. It has its failings, but I love it!

It’s a very unusual and impressive building. But I imagine it shows its age!

Many years ago, early 60's, my dad had a building company. He was told that the footings of this building were sinking and that the owners wanted to sell it. The figure mentioned was far less than it should have been. I remember that one Sunday dad took me and my brother down to Hastings to look at it I was about 10, my brother a bit younger. Looking around the building on the outside showed no evidence of subsidence. We looked inside around the basement and low down (I think someone with keys met us). Again, no sign of movement. Dad smelled a rat and said he wasn't interested. 6 years ago, our car was being serviced and the dealership leant us a demonstrator of the latest model for a day to see if we might fancy a change. We went to Hastings and Bexhill, and went in that cafe on the sea wall, or more accurately, we bought a coffee and tea, and sat out behind that semi-circle of glass to keep the breeze off.
