I price shopped at Kroger and Albertsons in the late 80s and early 90s in the Shreveport area. Back then, Albertsons did not own Safeway; however, the prices at Albertsons were substantially higher than Safeway. The prices at Kroger were high enough to make Albertsons' prices appear low.

Grocery prices will certainly go up at a higher rate than inflation if the merger goes through. The enormous amount of money being offered to buy these grocery chains has to be financed in some way. The cost of doing business is going up. This means more of the revenue coming in will be used to pay for financing of this project. This is bad for consumers. Less selection and higher prices.

I lived in Prescott several years back when Albertson's sold one of their stores to a smaller chain. That particular store was in a lower income section of town. When the new chain took over, the overall prices increased by an average of 10%... it only lasted about a year before closing. I hope that the same thing doesn't happen in the present... inflation has taxed everyone more than enough without a new store raising prices even more.

Yes. Those stores might close. But people eat. And other stores will provide those services. Employees will simply change their name tags and return to work on schedule. Competition is an overused work and concept. We shop Safeway every week. But also Costco and Walmart. Higher prices only reflect a weakened dollar. It takes more dollars to buy the same basket of foods. I am okay with that just like I am okay with paying employees more money. I am retired and fully understand our economy is based upon consumerism.

Yes, we do that to avoid all the delivery charges and "club" memberships.
The second reason is to keep current on pricing and comparison shopping. The corporate ghouls do not want their customers to comparison shop. They do not want you, let's call it, read the labels and the price tags.
Shopping online is killing the benefits of unit pricing we fought so hard to establish years ago. When did you last see a unit price comparison online?
The one thing that has stuck out to me is how long checkout lines are in grocery stores are becoming. Corporate ghouls are hoping to force you into online shopping. The lines are long because they keep reducing, or not replacing, staff in you local stores.
There are many other tricks the ghouls are implementing. Some I haven't identified yet, but myself and other consumers are no longer fooled by these master manipulators.
Don't allow the ghouls to close your local stores. Stop shopping online. That is where the real savings is occuring.
