There was this sliver of a time period in the late 70s to 1980-81 where pop with a certain groove ruled. Driver's Seat and Nick Gilder's Hot Child In The City always pair up nicely.
Like a combo of power pop mixed with rock with a hint of jazz, all snuggled in a blanket of dark desires. Absolutely the best stuff.

Guys, did you notice that the drummer did not change the tempo from beginning to end? This is very original, there are not many songs in the world where there is one tempo and the same movement, and they did it in such a way that it would not spoil the melody, so that it would not seem boring, a kind of unique song, now I doubt that such a thing would be written. Masterpiece.

For 40 years I have wondered if the drummer said thank god when he was able to stop. Not because of the complexity but for holding that beat and pace for almost 4 minutes. Don't know any drummers to ask how hard that would be to do.

2:22 The lead singer Paul Roberts is a commercial illustrator and painter. His artwork was selected for the albums. The medium he uses is oil on canvas. He continues to paint at age 76. A lot of the singers from that era would have a Bob Dylan derivative voice. Even Tom Petty and Dire Straits's Mark Knopfler mimic the Dylan voice. These albums are actually advertising his art skills and talent.

This is a great song. Unfortunately, as with most music videos, they used the radio edit. The album version has the full guitar solo which was deemed "too heavy" for AM radio. So if you add it to your playlist, make sure you get the album version. There is also an extended 12" version, but I can't recommend it.

I remember when this came out when I was in high school -- it got a fair amount of airplay on the rock stations but no one knew quite what to make of it. It wasn't exactly new wave, but it wasn't straight mainstream rock either. Oddly enough, although a lot of us loved the track, I don't actually remember anyone who ever bought the album. Nick, I don't hear cowbell or any other percussion. I think, because he's hitting the snare double time, the sound of the hi-hat and snare are mixing. There's also a possibility that you're heading the strum of the guitar mixed in there as well.

Dobie Gr.. Just kidding 😂 What makes Drivers Seat great is the deadpan lead vocals with the soulful backing vocals. Gerry Rafferty or even more Al Stewart esque with a touch of funkiness. That cat on the back ups adds a lot.

Thanks for the post, JGS. I wasn't sure if I was familiar with this song and, typically, I wait to watch a video for a song like that but your post intrigued me. I listened to about the first half of the song, just to keep some level of surprise when watching the video. While you're definitely entitled to your opinion and you may well not be wrong, I felt like (from what bit I heard) the lead singer's vocals in this song sounded like the guys and channel favorite Al Stewart but perhaps with a little more of a "bottom" end to it, where Stewart's vocals are more crisp but tend to stay in a higher register more so than this lead singer. I was interested in the comparison to Gerry Rafferty, a personal favorite. While Rafferty had some "bottom end" to his voice, I still came away thinking this singer was more Al Stewart with a slight bit of Rafferty tossed in. Again, I'm not indicating by any means that I'm right about that but it was my take based on what I heard. Thanks again for the post and I hope the video for "Drift Away" met your expectations. 😀

@@jgsrhythm100 Thanks for the reply, JGS. I could hear the Rafferty bit in the lead singer's voice. To my untrained ear, I felt like Rafferty had a certain amount of soulfulness to his vocals ("the bottom end" that I referred to in my previous reply), even though Rafferty wouldn't have been mistaken as a soul/R&B artist. As for the Sniff 'n' the Tears singer, his voice's "higher end" on the register seemed very reminiscent of AL Stewart. It came to me because I've always found Stewart's singing voice to be quite unique. If I had to do a percentage breakdown, I'd feel comfortable with sounding 75% like Stewart and 25% like Rafferty. Regardless, I've always really liked "Time Passages" and "Year of the Cat," so it's not as if the Sniff 'n' the Tears lead singer sounds like some kind of bum or anything. 😂 Thanks again for the reply and the feedback.

Songs from 1978-1980 had a really cool vibe. An in-between time period of genres I feel like that was either the perfect mix or just it's own transition from one decade to another. 1979 always makes me think of "Cars" by Gary Numan and "Pop Muzik" by M. Just a cool time to be young.

The cover of the album is actually a painting by the lead singer. I think he painted all their album covers.

This song takes me back to a much better time and place. The 80s were such a fun time to come of age! I think y'all will be putting this one on your playlist ❤

I get it but this was played way more in the 80s than it was in the 70s😂

@@gerib4234 By that logic, it's a 90's song, cuz it has been played way more than the 80's.

I remember hearing this song as a kid... Have not heard it in all these years. I thought it might change up with a or the chorus, but not a lot of changes. For sure a 70's groove. Oh yeah, he does look like Lenny K...😂

I recently learned this song had a long and winding path to be a hit. The band record this song and it eas starting to break out but the company that made the vinyl records went on strike. After that was over there were a couple of other issues. And although this record was recorded a couple of years before Dire Straits, by the time the record was out there, they had lost the momentum and had broken up.
    Cool song, great reaction

The first thing that drove me to this song was the heavy guitar.
After all these years I still love this song.
Listen to the album version in your own time.
After the keyboard solo at the end, there's another guitar solo.
I think Nick would appreciate that. Great reaction guys.🤟

Hey guy's and commenters! Many people consider them one hit wonders but they actually have a number of real good songs. People might want to check out
their following songs: 1) New Lines On Love 2) The Games Up 3) The Thrill Of It All 4) What Can Daddy Do 5) Night Life.
Note: If you like the ending of "Driver's Seat" you might want to play the longer 5:49 min. version. Enjoy!

Mark Knopfler? From the 707. You kids have so much music to listen to. The 60's, 70's, 80's there is so much to listen to.

Those cymbals are hi-hat cymbals and allows for a double tap, cymbals opened a small amount, then tap a second time while fully closed.
The hi-hat, with its two stacked cymbals whose degree of separation can be controlled to prolong or shorten the sound of the cymbals.
Why do I think when you said snare, you were talking about the cymbals and not the Snare Drum 😅😅😅
Luckily your body pointed it out so you got it.😊
