  • At the Ketagalan Forum, an annual prestigious platform hosted by Taiwan to discuss strategic and security issues mostly linked to the Indo-Pacific, President Lai Ching-te hit the ground running. "Authoritarianism has grown and is becoming more aggressive. It’s now a challenge at the global level," he said in his opening remarks to an audience that also had a former Japanese PM, U.S. diplomat Nikki Haley and a delegation from India led by former Deputy NSA Pankaj Saran. On Chinese aggression, Lai didn't hold back and made mention of a four-point action plan. In this chat with Associate Editor Amitabh P. Revi, StratNews Global Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, who was part of the Indian delegation to Taiwan, details what he saw and heard. Also, what Taiwan wants from India and how India can leverage the association.

This was a very informative interview. I firmly believe that Nitin Gokhale's significant contributions to India should earn him a Padma award. Some of the points he mentioned seem like "no-brainers" to me, such as (a) implementing single-window clearances for trade activities with India and (b) including Taiwan in the list of countries on Indian government websites. Additionally, he is now acting as an informal emissary between Indian companies and foreign countries. India has a golden opportunity to capitalize on its unique strategic position (sometimes, like Bangalore's weather, governments don’t have to work hard for the blessings that God bestows!) to benefit not only its citizens but also the rest of the world. Lastly, I must commend Amitabh Revi. While I have been critical of him in the past, he did an excellent job with this interview.

India requires to adhere to its non-alignment poltical strategy. It should trade with all countries BUT never ever interfere in their politics or become the pawn of others. The history of Taiwan is clear & India should remain neutral.

Taiwanese ministers racially discriminate against Indians in their speeches. There is a mass hysteria among Taiwanese people, that if Indian labour come to their country, it will ruin their culture. I don't think India Taiwan relationship has a bright future. The relationship will be completely transactional and business oriented.

India should study and Tap on Taiwan's and Hong Kong's Popular Street food skills and marketing and introduce them to India aggressively, especially on Touristy states eg like Kerala and Goa to woo and increase Taiwanese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Thai Tourists, to India. This doesnt reguire big capital expenditure and can encourage Indian youth to take up street food career and thus reducing country's unemployment.

At some point we need to visit Taiwan's claims on Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh which are the same as China's and to sensitize them to the fact that these are non-negotiable. The Taiwanese people I have met have said that they consider themselves to be the legitimate government of China and it is possible that should the CCP collapse, the Chinese people could turn to Taiwan for direction.

Interesting. I hope that India is listening.
India needs to grow up, and abandon the obsolete notion of being alone in the world.
India's China policies would work much better if
    1. India had defense arrangements with other regional countries -- Japan, PH, Taiwan, Vietnam, Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia, ROK.
    2. India had warmer trade and defense ties to the United States.
    3. Developed its anti-China strategy in coordination with Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Australia, and the United States.
US is key since it has alliances with all the countries in the region.

India is neither alone nor a loner. But india is not the defender of the world. We are not willing to fight and die for other people's wars or causes based on emotional statements. Nobody will fight for us but we have to fight for everybody. What a lopsided argument.

It is in US strategic interest to allow India lead Indo Pacific Treaty Organization with democratic neighbours of CCP, who are experiecing trouble, torture, compulsions, exploitations etc type of emotions to be rallied behind India to have dharmic way of life, trade, family and moksha. US will not have all the assets and burden to contain expansionism of CCP, as CCP has already mastered USA with big trade surplus and counter punches like fentanyl, piracy of IP, exploitation of labor and minerals in occupied lands of Tibet, Yunnan, Uighur, Mongolia, Manchuria et al. CCP is not a benign leader of Asia to practice live and let others live. Trouble needs to be brewed at multiple levels in CCP, which USA can handle with mastery given its IT supremacy.
