GREAT video. Super well done. WELL DONE. Love watching a young lady doing their own thing and succeeding. I have an Oura ring too, as does my son. You get it, Girl! Blessings to you. FAB review!
Thanks for the review Robin. This sounds like the perfect device for me as I transition away from keto to low carb as I’ve started resistance training. I’m so unsure about my metabolic flexibility so this popped up on my feed at the right time.
Love that you’re using the tool in a way that is personal to your body. You’ve really developed your own knowledge of your health. I like the look of the device, seems fun to use. And I like that you’re nerdily tracking your data on a spreadsheet.
Love your videos! Very informative! I’m prediabetic and was considering purchasing the Lumen device. Think I will after watching your video. Interesting point about the supplements and how they help make you feel calm. What is the organ supplement you take? Benefits? Thanks ❤
@@pennypiazza2769 aw thank you for the kind words! If you do decide to go for the Lumen device you can use code SELFCARE for $50 off. Have you ever used a continuous glucose monitor before? My organ mix supplement is freeze dried organ meat that’s very rich in vitamins and minerals. I take one of two a day and I’ve found they give me lots of energy. It’s essentially sort of like a natural multivitamin. As I mention in the video, every person’s body is different, so the only way to know if something works for you is to test and feel (and measure when you can). :)
This is the most useful review I've seen! And I've seen at least 10 on this device. I appreciate your insights on how you're using this tool to learn more about your own body.
How do you know the device is correct? I am low carb/keto and check my blood sugar and ketones throughout the day. I know that the Lumen assessing C02 and not ketones but how do you know it is correct? Is there a way to confirm?
Thanks for this review :) Now that I know there is something like this out there, I could maybe use it to determine if there is a link between my gut and my migraines. I have a suspicion that there is a vicious cycle going on as the painkillers that work for me are also the worst ones for my gut. Thank you!
Do you have experience with using lumen without a subscription? If so, does it still give good info? I’m also not really interested in the meal plan so I feel like ending the subscription soon after buying would be beneficial
In exercise physiology, the "RER" is used to determine fat vs carb burning. They measure oxygen used during an interval and CO2 exhaled. This is done by averaging many breaths over the course of some extended period of time. How is Lumen able to approximate this with CO2 alone? The fact that you get high cortisol in the morning is a flag for me that you likely have one or more polymorphisms in your genetics that result in your fatty acid oxidation not working optimally. I have the same issue, and my polymorphisms were in the CPT2 gene. It took forever to find those. The keto diet made me extremely ill for years, even after I stopped doing it, and I even now have not fully recovered. It was a terrible match to my genetics. I like your trick of taking a carb meal before sleep. That loads your glycogen overnight and prevents the need for cortisol to boost gluconeogenesis while you sleep.
I'm curious about the cortisol/polymorphisms connection. Can you tell me more? How you realised this connection and first off, whats the fastest way to see if you are a high cortisol upon waking type? TIA :)
@@MM-li8nkA good tool in general to expand your awareness of self-patterns is to buy continuous glucose monitors. The morning glucose surge before you eat any food is normally about cortisol rising and commanding the liver to make glucose. The CGM lets you visualize when that happens, either as you sleep or after you wake. Her "Fix your sleep" video talks about her waking at 4am, and she discovered that this corresponded to a rise in glucose. That glucose rise is likely higher cortisol, and in her case it might be that her glycogen stores exhausted, so the body rushes to make glucose. Her "trick" of eating carbs before bed is about expanding her internal glycogen stores, so that she never runs out of glycogen during the sleep period.
@@MM-li8nkThe easiest way to tell if your fat-burning metabolism may have genetic impairments is to fast or eat keto. Do you feel like death, and that feeling only gets worse as the fast continues? If yes, we have something to talk about. But diagnosing the root genetic cause for these kinds of metabolism issues is extremely difficult. No one helps a patient to do that unless you have a life-threatening metabolic mutation in your genes. Those more severe mutations are typically life-threatening and are seen in early childhood.
@@persistentone3448 interesting, no probs fasting generally, haven't done long fasts, but can IF 20hrs no prob. I attempted a 3 day fast not too long ago, did ok, didn't go hard, had just water with electrolytes and a bone broth or 2 to ease in, went well. Do close to ketovore most days lately, no issues. Thanks for your reply. Yes sucks it's near impossible to get any sort of traction by 'the system' these days. Go well.
I believe everyone's cortisol measurement and blood sugar is high in the morning. That was because your body is coldest at about 4 am and them warms itself and raises cortisol and blood sugar level so you can get up and look for food in the wild. I have read that this is circadian and normal.
It would've been nice if you actually followed the recommended meals to see if they would adapt to your results, and see if it was worth it. That's the part that combined with the device would make it for beginners imo. That's the part I want to know if works or not, and even though it didn't seem like what you needed at the moment, the idea was to see if the device recognized that what you ate did not meet your goals and it would try something else until it gets it right.
Thanks for posting this full video. In case it turns out to be necessary, is the surgeon’s name spelled “Nicholas Higgins”? Do we know where he practices?
Hi Robin! I'm really interested in the 3 supplements you show about midway through the video... I looked them up and it seems two of the three: Erica Rhodiola and Nordic Kings Organ Mix aren't shipped to the US. Do you have any tips or tricks on how I could potentially order and receive those here in the US of A? Thanks for all your work on putting these videos and insights together. I just recently found your page and am excited to watch/learn more. Thank you! Ashley
I used your $50 discount code. Thanks! Been using keto test strips and am very frustrated with the readings as I monitor everything I eat and I'm eating very low carb. I should be in major fat-burning but for some reason, I'm not, and the scale reflects that. It's time to step up the game and see what I'm doing wrong.
Interesting-thanks for sharing! Are you eating quite high protein? Sometimes heavily restricting carbs can cause our body to go into stress mode. When our bodies are under stress, it can be more difficult to burn fat. That’s something I definitely saw in my own Lumen experience. Not everyone does well on Keto. One way some people overcome this is by carb cycling- making sure to have carb-up meals every so often. Ultimately, everyone is different and it’s a journey to find what works best for our bodies! You know your body best. :) Tools like Lumen can definitely help illuminate what’s going on.
@@TheScienceofSelfCare Thanks for your response. I'm not intentionally following Keto but it seems I unintentionally ended up doing so. I started out doing low-calorie and low-carb OMAD. After 1 week I changed to a 4-5 hour eating window. I like that much better.
@@stormet54 sounds like you’re on a great path and are adjusting as you go! Every single person I’ve met who takes good care of their body and feels amazing has gone through many phases of experimentation - the journey never stops. :)
I bought the Lumen becasue of this video. I am a post menopausal woman who gained a lot. I am very healthy and workout a lot. For the past 20 years, since I gained the weight NOTHING has helped me to lose anything. I don’t gain but I can’t lose either. Some sort of metabolic syndrome. Finally went to a doctor that specializes in weight loss and nutrition. Her takeaways - I eat a little bit less than I should and I exercise too much and the wrong type of exercise. The shots were an option that I do NOT want to use. So I bought the Lumen. It has changed my life. Stunning to learn how my body works and see it in real time become more efficient. For the first week, I never got into fat mode, ie for 20 years no matter the exercise I did I never burned fat. I am losing about 3/4 of a pound a week - nice and slow and healthy. I have now lost almost 20 pounds. My doctor was thrilled that the body analysis she did showed that all the weight loss is fat not muscle. While the reviewer didn’t like the app, I loved it. It tells me how many carbs/protein/fat a day and when to eat them. It changed the combo and amounts everyday. I only thing I don’t utilize is the option to buy their prepared food. So I am eating more, exercising less and completely differently (less cardio and more weight training fewer times a week). I am solving my weigh issue using my own body and optimizing my metabolism. I feel fantastic. It lets you test how what works and doesn’t work for you. I have never written a review for anything before but I can’t tell you how thankful I am for finding this. Just be aware all these reviewers are young and have no weight to lose. They don’t understand the issues of post menopausal women. I can’t recommend this enough. There is another reviewer that gave a scathing review and I am going to post how wrong she is at her site.

Hey! Thanks for your question. :) I do feel like this could tell you a bit about bodily stress (though not very directly).
