Johnnie Altman was superb as Nick Cotton, not hard to see why June Brown was chosen to play Dot Cotton, they could easily be real life mother and son. I always loved the contrast between the characters Nick stealing, etc and his mother Dot Cotton, described as the Bible bashing, menthol smoking arch gossip of the washing machines, and quite waspish at times, sadly I don't think the writers write for Dot very well now. no gossip etc now. and they can call her Branning till a cow flies over the moon, but she will always be Dot Cotton to us EastEnders followers.
Didn't know Gary Holton was original choice for Nick which was a hostile move by the BBC against ITV obviously needing him for smash hit series Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Gary said no thanks and recommended his pal from Quadrophenia John Altman who never looked back, sadly Gary was found dead months later, shame as the guy had a brain able to not only give correct (and better) casting advice but help an old actor pal out at same time. Expecting the public to think "Wayne" was a bad guy now could've killed Eastenders as it was absurd and people would've switched off also disliking the BBC for breaking up the popular Auf Wiedersehen Pet team.

dear lord everything was raw as fuck...the handling of the acting and cliffhangers are so much better done in recent yrs than it was in it's first yr as well as the acting as the cast gotten used to their role.
This man is a legend a screw you all against him. Literally turned down offers from eastenders as they wanted to turn his character into a queer and he rejected. Just like those who practice lgbt rights, a hetero can practice hetero rights. Thats why they ended up killing off his character in such a way
When classic Eastenders was shown on the drama channel eventually Nick was allowed back in when he got a job working for Tony and Sue convinced Angie and Den that it was only fair they let Ali back in aswell
