As a singer myself: my parents gave me constructive criticism when it was warranted and got me voice lessons. Best parents ever. Getting praised from your peers is one thing but if your folks say you need work on your voice to improve, they're most likely onto something.

First time I tried to sing my mom yelled down the stairs, "what the f**k are you doing? You sound like a dying cat!"
While not everybody could handle such harsh criticism from their own parents, I thank mine every day for being so brutally honest. 10 years later, and I frequently find myself asked to track harmonies for clients and occasionally even give vocal lessons. I'm no Freddie Mercury, not even remotely close, but the fact that professional musicians have come to trust my vocal advice tells me I must have improved drastically. Those you care about will help you so much more by being critical then being blindly supportive.

after I had been playing guitar for about 6 months, trying to learn songs and singing along to keep track of my place in the song, my step-mom came in and said, "you know, you really can't sing." Nice to have your soul crushed at 13 years old... that way you're experienced when you enter the working world and it happens on a daily basis.

When I had some musicians who went into panic mode when the RED LIGHT was on, I would start them out with "a series of run-throughs," while never telling them that I was recording.
Damn, dude, we should have recorded THAT one.
    Well, guess what? :)
Pretending a take was better than it was, and then asking for a few "safety" tracks never hurt.
But yea, in general, be ready when in the studio. Tick-tock = $$$

I had that done to me while recording drums, my bandmates thought it would be a good idea for some reason. It backfired because since I was under the impression that I wasn't recording I improvised, goofed around and just had fun. The surprise was when they told me the take was usable and only a couple things would have to be punched in here and there. Great way to learn that none of my bandmates actually paid attention to what I played during rehearsals for the previous three years.

Pre-production with potential clients can be a huge time and money saver. A few weeks before the studio date, attend a practice with the band, or one of their shows, and see how they play. If they're nailing all their songs, game on. If they're biffing it, not together, etc., encourage them to push back their studio date a bit to continue learning their songs. Tell them what they need to fix. You can also use this session to help them pick which songs will go onto the album, so they can focus on getting those songs down tight. If the band flips you shit for this, they're probably going to frustrate you in the studio.

I knew I had it in me, but just didn't try. After figuring it out at home and knowing I'd be good enough to sing in public because I built that confidence, it made it so much easier to do it in public.

my rule is 5 takes for rhythm guitar, 11 takes for solos. if i can't do it after that, i'll get muscle fatigue and it's not worth doing it that day anymore. that, or i need to rethink it, but not overthink it. i've had a lot of one-take wonders happen to me when i was going for placeholders.

I had one of those nights staying up because some dipshit that was not good enought for his band couldn't get a solid take on rhythm guitar. Finally I took the singer aside and asked him to tell him is was good enough for editing(which I HATE doing!) and go home. We stayed and I(not in the band) rerecorded the tracks on his amp in one take. To this day he doesn't know he wasn't on the album. Just have to do that sometimes!

Totally agree. sometimes you just have to say you got it, then record it yourself after they leave as a last option. sucks, but it's really not your fault- it's theirs. learn your parts! it's amazing how sloppy some players are, or how little they know about dialing in their own gear for the sound they want. a di, and the ability to play a couple instruments goes a long way for a recording engineer.

Wow, a battle of the bands in school and it's selective on music styles? I'd do the rock n roll thing. Say you play (classic) rock, get on stage, metal the shit out of things and see if they got the heart to pull the plug on you. Get them to introduce you playing a song you're absolutely not going to play if you have to.
If they let you play and disqualify you afterwards you still played your music and people got to hear it. If they pull the plug on you it'll cause a nice bit of sensation that'll be remembered. Win- Win!

Hi Glenn. I'd like to add to the Latency question: Latency time based on Samples is directly dependent of Sample Rate. 32 Samples at 48kHz equal a time of 0.66ms, If you double the Sample rate to 96kHz your latency drops to the half of 0.33ms... if your Audio-PC can handle the load.
Please allow me to put this numbers in relation. 0.66ms at the speed of sound (343m/s) equals a distance of roughly 23cm. So you would have your ear quite close to your speaker if adapted to a simple Guitar->Amp-Setup. If you're dealing with Headphones or InEar-Monitoring a overall latency of up to 3-6ms is imho acceptable. E.g. the naturally ocurring delay between a Snare hit and the drummers Ear, assuming a distance of 1m, comes to roughly 3ms.
If someone is uncomfortable during tracking or playing live (I'm a live-guy, so more experience with stage-monitoring stuff on that account) with the latency present, there is the option to play around with that to give especially InEar monitoring a little more of a "natural" feel.
But yes, as low as possible is a good point to start when dealing with latency issues.
Love the Channel, greetings from Switzerland.

hey glenn, you think you can do a fearless gear review on the nady wireless systems for guitars? ive seen they run pretty cheap, a single unit of transmitter and receiver go around 60 USD, i was wondering if they are an ok product, or they're just plain bad.

    • @soundman1402

I've been bitten by cheap wireless systems. I advised a friend away from buying $250 lavalier systems for her drama class. She bought them, anyway, and then called me and asked why she was having so many problems with them (radio noise, dropouts, poor sound quality, etc). Unfortunately, if you want it to sound good, and perform properly, you need to spend some bucks.

Ive been using the digital Line6 G30 system since it came out in 2009 (i think) and its been really great, with digital the sound is either perfect or you might possibly have drop outs, but i have never had a problem. The line6 wireless transmits on 4 frequencys at the same time for redundancy, so even if 3 of them are interrupted you still have perfect quality. The G30 costs down to about 1/3 of what i payed now and it wasnt really expensive back then either considering it is so superior to analog systems. The line6 wireless is usable worldwide also unlike analog systems if that matters to you.

A wireless system for guitars is not a wireless lav mic system. For lav mics, yeah, you need to spend some decent cash for pro-quality sound. A guitar rig? Not so much.
I have a Nady wireless guitar system from the 90’s that is still running well.

Coming from the hi-end audio hobby, it became clearly apparent that out of the entire stereo reproduction chain (Remember, the perfect stereo RECREATES perfectly adding no colorations of its own) the speakers had the potential to screw up the sound the most and therefore became the most critical part of the chain. The speakers are subject to the greatest distortion, phase mis-alignment, non-flat freq response, cabinet and room resonance, etc etc. We used to recommend half the stereo budget goes toward the best sounding speakers they could choose in their budget. Nothing , IMO, is more important than the speakers and monitors because those are truly your window into the sound

Bands like The Dead Boys, Ramones, Blondie, Dead Kennedys, etc., etc., .I remember how tight these bands were when they hit the stage and everyone knew when bands kicked ass...back then you had bad musicians, but they were quickly rooted out, because we understood what playing in the pocket was all about. Also, I've never had a bad experience shopping with Sweetwater, even when something didn't go right. I've also bought guitars from them before, and their luthiers set them up really well. If you're going to buy a guitar online, listen to as many sound demos and playing reviews as you can stand, and make sure the guitar's specs are similar to guitars that you know you like playing. That's always worked for me.

I do not think I have ever commented. I love your videos. I remember when I was a young teen and I went to the local music store to look at acoustic guitars. I found a 12 stringer (big Neil Young fan) and starting playing a little bit. After about ten seconds, the guy working there was on the phone and threw a pencil at me and chewed me out for making noise while he was on the phone. He is lucky I was just a young teen. If it happened now, I am afraid what I would do.
Just so you know, I am not too much into metal. I saw Judas Priest in 1979 and was also into Motorhead quite a bit. I have never been good enough to be in a band, but if I was, and was going to a studio to record, I could never ever ever consider anything other than getting it right without fixing it later. I just do not understand that train of thought. Thanks again for being so cool dude:)

    1) Would it damage the instrument if I played the bass using a coin as a pick?

Good advice for the uncertain singer - try and if you really want to do it keep trying because you will find your voice. My top tip is to see a vocal coach to learn how to warm up your voice and make sure that you always do that before every practice or performance. They are also invaluable for finding your range - When our singer quit suddenly all 4 remaining band mates had a go at singing - 30 years later I'm still the lead singer by being the least worst option and I'm still working at it.

Hi! Speaking as a guitarist, I think you were a little bit bombastic on the 'Red Light Panic'-question there :D
Although I never spent THAT much time getting my tracks down, I do sometimes get the RLP. Even if I know my parts. Even on simple stuff. It is just something about being set on the spot having to perform on demand as opposed to sitting at home or at the rehearsal room just enjoying playing and not having to "answer to anyone".
I guess it is a bit like an ice breaker: Once you first crack the code the rest usually flows much better.
So, I guess what I'm saying, give the poor fella a bit of slack on the first takes. He (or she) might just need some time to warm up to and get into the whole situation.
That being said: Know your parts before hitting the studio!!! There is no such thing as being overly prepared for your sessions!
My band went into the studio believing we were a-ok, but it seemed certain members were not quite there yet. Wanna guess which ones? :D

Most of the time was taken up by the drummer not being able to play to a click or without the rest of the group playing. In this take, it was actually the bass player that did their part quickly and well. So far, I have been disappointed by the lack of talented musicians who come into the studio. I’m glad I’m not the only one with such a problem.

Hey Glenn, just wondering do you have any suggestions for finding band members, drummers and bassists? Where I live in America it's tough to find anyone who plays, much less willing to be in a band.. also, I'm in 10th grade and the band probably won't be able to be a huge commitment, any ideas on time management for a busy band?
Love the videos and have a great day, long live rock and roll🤘🤘

In all honesty I don't think SMG (and a lot of other channels and content creators) should be age *restricted* but I feel like RUclips would do well with some "this content contains x, y and z and shouldn't be shown to this demographic"

The dude who asked about the battle of the bands in August may come from my country Glenn. I think we're one of the last few countries in the world who start school July/August.
Also, yeah in my country several competitions outright BAN Metal because it's either a) performers tend to destroy gear if they get too much into it or b) the organizers are worried that the audience will leave since Metal isn't the type of music the masses like. The most heaviest they'll allow are those Pop-Punk bands, think "Warped Tour".

For whoever asked about the Noise Gate: Boss NS-2. It’s built like a tank, the gate works amazing, and you can set it to re-loop through the pedal for pre gain AND post gain gating. It’s simply amazing to use.

I always enjoy your channel; thank you for another great video. Some thoughts concerning latency free monitoring. I’ve always used an analog mixer for monitoring, and that solves any latency issues for me. For mixing these days I mix entirely ITB, but monitoring i use a small mixer with excellent preamps. Wondering if you ever tried that and/or what you think about it?

A tip: if you're tracking with amp sims into a project you're building piece by piece and you're doing the top-down mastering thing (mixing through the master), turn off your mastering plugins.
PDC (Plugin Delay Compensation for those who don't know) will push back all other elements of a mix if one particular plugin is introducing latency. So, if your mastering chain has high PDC values (in Reaper you can see it in the Performance Monitor, Ctrl Alt P), turn that off when you track a new part or turn off live monitoring entirely and listen to your own playing.
This might be helpful to you because I've noticed I'm not the only one who uses my current mastering chain (SSL Bus Comp into Slate FG-X or Waves L3 Multi). These two plugins (plus any others you might add) introduce like 3 to 4 thousand samples of PDC, creating latency you cannot get around by lowering oversampling or using smaller buffers.

    • @SpectreSoundStudios
      @SpectreSoundStudios  6 лет назад +3

Yeah the L3 Multi is a real pig on resources. FG-X seems quite a bit less. The SSL bus comp can REALLY mess with your palm mutes as well.

Don't know how I missed this viewers comments episode, but I'm glad I found it now. I've been recording my friends band now for what's pushing 8 months at this point now. We tried starting with my friend (drummer) and then tracking all the other parts after the drums were laid down.
Needless to say, 8 months later and still no drums. He had every excuse under the sun of why he couldn't record his parts. The list is as follows: my drum setup, my kick, throne height, pedal, his angle to the kit, didn't like the scratch tracks, his legs, my snare, and his shoes. He later went out and bought a different pair of shoes. I kid you not.
I said to him, dude this isn't working. Why don't we move to guitar and bass and then come back to you. Guitarist double tracked all his parts in 4 days. Bass player came for 3 days. Now we're back to the drummer and he still can't play his parts. Last time we tried recording he said "he thought it was the air/pressure in the room that does something to the drums." All this to say, I am trying to build up a portfolio and was offering these recordings at no charge. Then he had the nerve to say, "good thing we're recording with you. We would've spent so much at another studio". Lol sorry for the long comment, but I thought you'd get a kick out of it, Glenn. Feel free to shame me lol. I can take anything at this point.

0:14 I've always found what helps me is to get 'into character' while singing. Most of the records I've sang on I was holding a guitar and/or wearing sunglasses or some kind of costume. I have never had good results when I'm just myself but maybe that's just me. hope that helps/give you some ideas.

For the person doubting themselves about singing, don't be surprised if you have to change singing styles too. I was trying to sing (I'm a drummer) a song (can't remember what) and when I listened back, I found that rather than sounding like who I wanted to emulate, I ended up sounding a lot like Joe Elliot from Def Leppard...
some peoples' voice won't suit some styles without adaptation. Imagine Sebastian Bach trying to sing a Fear Factory song (yes I'm old-school).

    • @timwilson30
      @timwilson30 6 лет назад

I totally agree. I don't consider myself to be a great singer by any means (I'm a bassist), but the thing I struggle with the most is singing really clean. I think my voice is actually at it's best when I push myself and put a little grit/rasp into it. Unfortunately, that limits me as far as what I think I sound good singing but I was much happier/confident with myself as a whole once I narrowed down what I was good at.
So I'll add on the advice of just experimenting and giving yourself time to find your own voice before falling into the "Man, I suck" trap. Even if you're singing a cover, fuck it, you don't have to sound like the singer. Just practice and figure out how to sing it your own way.

Glenn, who does the background music for this video, the guitars are killer. Also, wanted to add something to the retail comment. I don't work in a music store so it's not the same, we are not forced to upsell, really we are just there for our expertise and to help the customer make an informed decision. There are cases where we will suggest something to a customer that may work better for them for more money. We also don't work on commission so that makes a difference.

In the topic of endless takes I have a couple of histories with one particular band, the past year a band in which two friends play were booked for a cover compilation album (never released by the way), so they ask me if I can record them... here the horror show begins. The day that we must start the recording the guitarist thought that I will take a long time in get all the stuff conected and routed but with some planning before hand I get a drum kit mic and ready to go in hour and a half so we can record at the moment... he doesn't called the bass player/vocalist because he has a bad temper in waiting for the things get done.
And here we go just drums and guitar in a cover by the way it was supposed to be rehearsed by three months before ,the train wrecked continues with some punch ins and punch outs here and there to get pieces of the drums which I can arranged to get the drum track in which the drummer had the great idea in scream to make an accent in the track, I had to made a some kind of search/find/cut/paste mission in the whole bits we recorded the last night to make a patch for that scream.
Next day were the guitar tracks... long history short these one take around 8 hours to have ONE good track and THREE hours more in have anything on the second guitar... so I had to copy and paste the second one to have those guitar tracks.
By the time the bass player/vocalist dude arrive the song has two compasses more than the original so I ended in a fight in (you will love this...) that is my responsabilitie know a song in which I DONT FUCKING PLAY ANYTHING! and it was my fault that they recorded the guitars and drum track with errors. So i take my equipment and retire from the site not before telling them I'am out... few months later they ask me again to finish their recording after they shitblast the bass player/vocalist dude... this session took three hours more to be finished and mastered just because I don't want to stay more time with this guy and take my equipment back home again.
Shame on me I never charge a dime on them so I learn in the bad way work done work payed in advance.
    Cheers and greetings from Mexico.

Hi Glenn, how far do you think a record could go using only Garage Band?. I’ve been using it for keeping track of my ideas and as a songwriting tool. And yes I used the programmed drums on it since I don’t know how to play drums nor have a band (family and full time job). I guess my plan is to have the tracks and then move them to logic or something like that, do you think that should work?.
Thanks a lot for your videos and fuck you!!! Cheers!!!!
