Sphagnum moss is actually an acid producer. You probably know that your acid, somewhat sandy areas, are ideal for blueberries or huckleberries. Where you have maples, the soil is richer. White pine does not age well and cutting down older, larger trees save a lot of grief as they tend to break off or uproot as an older species. Spruce are very limber and do not tend to break off. Just a note from your friendly neighborhood botanist in West Virginia.

I live on my families Homestead in the rain forest of the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. We have lots of Elk and they really like our Apple trees. What I have learned over the years when we plant new trees I use a Solar Powered 12 volt electric fence charger and a few straps of wire around the fence posts will save your trees . I had to learn the hard way replacing trees every spring. Its very hard to establish a fruit orchard we have 50 fruit trees but it took me 100 trees to get there. Get the most powerful fence charger you can get.

I’m always hoping for more content from you Shawn simply because what you are doing is so interesting and I support your philosophy and outlook, but I do understand that you have a life outside of You Tube. The fact that we aren’t seeing more of you is due to you giving your time and knowledge to those close to you so they too can become self reliant is commendable. Good luck and Godspeed and I’m not going anywhere.

Where I live in northeast Pennsylvania, the deer and rabbits decimate every tree, shrub and plant I've tried to grow over the past years. I've lost over 100 trees and shrubs to them. They even eat all of the supposed deer resistant shrubs like hazelnut. I've had to learn to protect any tree or shrub I want to grow with tree protectors or wire fencing. Once the trees and shrubs are established and tall enough I can remove the fencing. And electric fences keep the bears out of my bee yard and chicken pen. My electric fences are from Premier One and are solar powered, which works great during the sunny months. During the darker winter months, the bears are hibernating.
It's good to see your videos again, I always enjoy them. Take care.

I was 20 when I learned from my lead man that the most important factor of anyone in the makeup of their Character. Rich or poor, the character of a person truly defines his path in life whether he is struggling going up a rocky mountain or down a slippery slope or on level ground where everything is good and all going his way. You Jimmy to me exemplify a true man in every aspect of good and courage. You seem very disciplined and dedicated and not afraid to make big changes in your life as you see it to be needed where many fail and stay in the rut of their life to the bitter end. I truly Love your Vlogging moments.

Shawn, for keeping the animals out have you considered putting in portable, solar powered electric fencing till you can get something more permanent working, that way in the interim you can focus more on the house, garden's and other important priorities.
When time permits you move onto the projects that need it

Well Shawn as the old addage states "There are only so many hours in a day that man can utilize before he needs sleep to recircumvent fresh ideas" and with Spring just around the corner that means trouble in the form of flies and bugs, so maybe an idea to stave off the Moose would be to use a low powered wire around the fencing, same as what is used in Deer toleration. Just an idea and set high enough off the ground so Cali will not be hut by a surge.

As always, our best to you and your family. It's a tough life, but very rewarding. I married a city girl, or I'd have been doing similar years before I couldn't. Now I need to purchase, or have built, for my retirement. I'm already retired, but my wife has a few years, a decade, yet, before we can get out to the woods. Never know, maybe sooner. Especially the way the world is self destructing. A little bit everyday and the project(s) get closer to completion.

Amazing how you've done so much thinking through the possibilities of how to make use of your homestead location, compared to the surrounding area, the trees, the conditions of soil, the sunlight coming in, and the choice of fruit trees, meanwhile ready to start working on the mudroom. Your focus is a well trained one, I presume, knowing to just work on one job at a time 😊 day by day a work in progress. And what a progress. Your videos are an inspiration for me, Shawn. Holding on to the work at hand with patience and perseverance, rain or shine, presents a rewarding result always. And I know that you don't take things for granted at all.

I saw a dwarf apple with thorns on a customers drive yesterday. Gonna ask if I can dig up a shout, come spring. Then will graft to that root stocks. I use hugelkulture same difference. I have lots of brush on my forest floor. We bring buckets of soil out of the bog to help white sand on bluff. Moose are way harder on fruit trees in winter than deer.

My rural neighbor had 500 moderately fenced in apple trees. During apple season he used a combination of electric fencing and weirdly, he hung up around the fences probaby a dozen pillow case sized untanned pieces of bear hides that were incredibly smelly. (he buried them the rest of the year) His theory was the smell of dead bears keep the bears away and the smell of bears kept the deer away. He also set up old a.m. radios and played talk radio stations loudly all night long. In October he sure had some apples.......

Another RUclips channel uses solar electric line to deter bears. One tore their window a little bit on the yurt. Their neighbors recommend the solar line/ fence and their 2 blue heeler dogs and they have had no more issues at this point. Love what your doing!!!

I wonder if getting more dogs isn't the best deterrent in a situation as widespread as this? (what those of us in the city don't have to deter deer are wolves). That, and just planting so much that you can 'share' with the wildlife. However, I know that wildlife are just as lazy as humans. If there is an easy food source, they will gravitate toward it. Not dummies.

We are bee keepers in Central British Columbia, with lots of bears around. We use a predator electric fence around our bee yard, and have only once lost any hives - and that was our own fault because we didn't get the fence plugged in early enough in the spring! They make them in solar power as well - might be worth looking into!

Continue building the house, dry out the cellar, get more fence up, plant and protect fruit trees, plant in the garden and greenhouse, oh…sit down to relax and get a show put up for viewers. Wow! Building the house with such big logs seem to make it more time consuming, but I’m sure will be better in the long run. I'm happy for you for being able to stay on your property for lengthy periods of time. Our land is 750 miles from where we currently live. I can only go twice a year for 3-4 weeks each time. I do work on getting the lumber together, Timbers prepared and joinery cut and fitted. Working on the front door this week and putting together some wiring and plumbing supplies. Heading there in 5 weeks for a 3 week stay. This is year 6 of what I thought would be a five year plan. I just try to remember how far we've come not how much farther we have to go. Like you the journey is with my family. My son's and my wife along with many friends. It is an epic adventure every trip. I am buying a Woodland Lumber mill next week. I have had to rely on others for too long. Like your channel says. My self reliance is the key to success.

Thank you Shawn, your videos are so calming and relaxing for those of us caught up in the hustle and bustle of city living. I had no idea there was so much more involved in building a cabin, the environmental concerns, growing food, dealing with underground water, the soil acidity, dealing with the forest animals and their potential for causing problems, how to bring in more sunlight and I know I'm just scratching the surface. I'm really looking forward to seeing the cabin finished and your living comfortably again. I'm still not over your forced move out of your prior dwelling. It looks like your new cabin is going to be larger and also has a basement, looks like a lot more work, I really looking forward to seeing it.

Once again you are doing things with trees and branches and not wasting anything from the trees. The first time I saw a video of your channel and you were building your other cabin I feel in love with what you do and how you do things with old hand tools and you very seldom use power tools. And I feel in love with your other cabin and the outdoor kitchen. I hope you have another and bigger outdoor kitchen with this cabin. We have been getting warmer weather thinking we might have a early spring for once but the last 3 days it's been in the upper 60's and today a front came through and dropped the temperature back 25degreesin 2 hours and for the next 2week there's a chance of snow and rain and a high in the lower 40's to upper 30's but all the snow we have gotten is all melted and we are getting a inch or two tonight and tomorrow and a chance of rain Friday and Saturday and maybe Sunday. We are like 20+ inches behind in moisture this winter but my dad always said that you can get all your snow in April as he remembers of when he was a kid. Can't wait for you to finish your cabin and work on the inside of it. Will you have a screen in porch like the other cabin. And if you have a outdoor kitchen will you screen that one in also ?

I think your plans for the garden soud great. Defiently think a living hedgerow is the way to go. It utilises resources you already have plus always continues to grow and get thicker and stronger.

One of the only things I dislike about our Canadian ecosystems here (I'm in MB, but in addition to forests similar to yours, the more broadleaf boreal forest we have a little north of me, and our aspen parklands are about my favorite places anywhere), is the fact that we can't do the bigger nut trees they have in warmer areas. Would be such an incredible source of food to have even a single walnut or pecan tree or similar. I can't even imagine it really.

Another added benefit from clearing trees to open up for more hours of sunlight exposure for the day is it'll help you produce more electricity on your solar panels once you get them established, especially during the shorter winter days. But I'm pretty darn sure you also factored that in when you made the decision to clear more trees, lol. Anyway, are you still intending to chip up the wood debris around the cabin to help with soil admendment? Curious if you were able to fix that wood chipper that broke.

I enjoy your channel and never miss a new post! May I suggest an electric fence around your garden they come in a self contained solar powered system.

I really enjoyed this video. Your last garden at the original homestead was fantastic and productive so I have no doubt that over time this garden will be very fruitful. I can't help but wonder if you are creating a bear feeding ground, though. Is there a bear hunting season where you live?

Shawn you need to ask for volunteers to help! They could help you with fence, garden prep and planting! Other RUclipsrs like yourself enjoy teaching people on self sufficiency!

Cherry Trees you need a Large Bird Nets.
Glad you've got large growth area.
Still have 3 80ft Red Cedars, and 75ft Sweet Maple between the house.
30 ft is now Partial Shade.
Have 20ft deep Full Sun. So we to extent Garden Area another 15ft left of Cedars.
Two ideas, first use Straw Bales add growing area.
Second to find old Gutter hang off Deck. Gives another growth area. You need to add drainage holes. You water top one drains into bottom.
    Keep great videos.
    Starting plants from Seed early.
