This one is very close to my heart as I'm a huge fan of ‪@steviewonder‬ .
I really enjoyed this original, playful and masterful performance of 'Superstition' by Stevie Wonder and stunning music video created and performed by vocal genius from Voiceplay.
Especially the beatbox in this one hits so hard! What a group, what a song what a cover! Hope you enjoy my reaction and music analysis.
    P.S.
I promise I will never again doubt ‪@GeoffCastellucci‬ 's bass voice!

If you appreciate arrangements that respect the originals, yet put a special spin on the songs; performances that make work together creativity, humour and skills; next level emotion carrying, voice acting, continuous interaction and a perfect integration of all the elements, well, you got your Paradise. 🙂
It doesn't really matter which song you choose to examine. These things are Voiceplay's trademark. And when you'll watch some of their old LIVE performance videos, you'll see that it just shows off there too. 🙂
You're in for an enchanting, exciting - no, EXHILARATING - journey with these guys. 🙂
Anyway... A few informations, so to say:
    - Geoff's name is pronounced "Jeff" 🙂.
    - Yes, the guy in the middle is Omar Cardona, the featured guest. As others pointed out, they use to put the guest in the middle... But not always. For example, in their cover of Metallica's "Nothing else matters" the featured artist is J None, ad he is the second from left. Some of us, me included, like to think that this happened because he still is "an actual element of the group". The same applies to other videos. 🙂
    - If you want to try their "epic" side, "Hoist the colours" (from Pirates of the Caribbeans 3), "My mother told me" (from both the tv series "Vikings" AND Assassins Creed V - Valhalla), "Valhalla calling" (originally by Miracle of sound, who gave their version "10 raised alehorns out of 10" for the most creative cover of his song)... And more.
    - If you want to see their melodic-sentimental side at work, try either one among these: Radiohead's "Creep", "I can't help falling in love", "True colours", "I can't make you love me" (which had many watchers, including reactors, shed more than one tear...).
    - If you want to hear Omar again, you can try "The Dragonborn comes - Skyrim". IMHO, a fantastic arrangement 🙂.
    - Want their fun side? Their, and I quote, "ridiculous version" of "Drunken Sailor", Disney's "We don't talk about Bruno", "You're a mean one, mr. Grinch", "In the hall of the Mountain King", "Christmas don't be late (the Chipmunks song)", as an example. But their live performances as well... 😉
    - A video that puts together "fairy tale", cuteness, and is somehow weird? "Golden hour". 😁
    - Or else... Pick ANY of their videos. There's so much in them, musically, arrangement-wise, in harmonies and more. You just can't miss. 😅
Love your ways of reacting and analysing the songs in several aspects. I learn something every time, which is what I watch reactions for. 🙂
    See you next time!

Really enjoying and appreciating your reactions and analyses. VoicePlay really are a special group; so creative and original, and their arrangements are nothing short of brilliant. They are so gifted at staying true to the heart of the song- whatever it is- and yet putting their own spin on it so that it becomes something new and separate from the original. They truly don't believe in covering a song unless they can bring something new to the interpretation of it. It's an utterly brilliant balance that they strike, and the reason why they can do insane things like dropping a trap beat into a piece of classical music and make it not only work, but work incredibly well. I can't wait to see where you go next on your VoicePlay journey; I am here for it!

Can't remember if I posted this. But either way, Voiceplay is:
Layne Stein, (probably unnecessary to mention, but it's said like "Lain") their beatboxer, to the right of the trunk. Sometimes he sings, and it's always a treat to hear his voice. He also has another talent I won't spoil for you.
    J. None. Currently on leave, singing for the Naval Choir, but stull often sings with VP.
Geoff Castellucci (said Jeff "Cass-tel-loo-chee) J like Junior.
Eli Jacobsen (pronounced El-ee, NOT E-lie! Rhymes with "Jelly.") The bald fellow with the rock god voice.
Cesar De La Rosa, their newest member Is not in this one. This was before he joined. There are several different line-ups to Voiceplay as members have changed over the last 20 years.
Their guest here is Omar Cardona, on the couch, an amazingly talented young man who was on "The Voice" and should have won.

  • @ilonadever8249

Geoff has said "why do something that someone else has already done?" They always pay homage to the original but never do a cookie cutter version.
Left to right, Geoff (Jeff), Eli (ellie, short for Eliezer) Jacobson brilliant tenor, Omar (featured artist is almost always in the middle), J None (with them from 2018 to 2020, joined the US Navy and is singing with them), Layne Stein, beatboxer and baritone. If there is ever any instrument in their covers, it is always visible. They don't try to hide it. They had a high tenor with them from the beginning who left for personal reasons in 2020. You will see Earl in older pieces. You saw J None's replacement in Hellfire, on the far right.
I know you have a list of suggestions for them, so I won't add any more. But be watching, they should have a new one out in a couple of weeks.

I really enjoy your reactions and your analysis. I don’t have any musical training and I have learned so much from reactors like you. Every musical professional who reacts brings in a new outlook that really helps people like me appreciate the music even that much more.
VoicePlay are known as the kings of Halloween. Every year they put out a Halloween or spooky season theme. It isn’t always specifically pumpkins and witches, but it usually has some sort of supernatural or spooky feeling. I’m pretty sure that this was their 2020 Halloween offering.
I am not a big fan of rap but J has rapped in a few of their pieces and it always seems to fit.
One of my favorites with Omar is one of the first videos I saw from them, Carry on Wayward Son.
Layne does indeed do the percussion , but occasionally Geoff will back him up and in the recent mini,Eli (bald tenor) performed Layne’s famous drop sound. It sounds just like a water drop.
Originally the group was made up of four or five male members. Around 2010 they rebranded as VoicePlay with five permanent members. Their original high tenor, Earl, left about 2020. That position was never filled and Eli, who joined around 2010, started taking the higher tenor parts. The rest of the changes were in the baritone slot. Their original beatboxer Scott Porter left in 2010 and Layne switched from the baritone spot to fill that. At that time they brought in Tony Wakim who stayed with them until 2017. When Tony left, J None Joined and remained until 2021 when the US Navy recruited him to sing for them. At that point in time they brought in Cesar de la Rosa who who is currently the baritenor. (He and Omar are besties and have been roomies.).
They fill the empty slot with a variety of guest artists, many of whom return for repeat performances. Among those who have made multiple appearances are Omar, Rachel Potter, Adriana Arellano, Jose Rosario Junior, and recently Anthony Gargiula .

Great comments and insights. If you become a VP patron, you'll get the behind the scenes interaction with the group where they share things like the composition / arrangement. For their next release "not saying..." they allowed the Patrons to hear each part of the song individually emphasized, so we could hear Layne's entire part, Geoff's entire part, Eli's part, etc. It was amazing listening to a release of the song with each member of the group having their own version showcasing their part throughout the song. As you get to know them, you'll find that if they include any instrument or something that isn't voice produced, they will show it to you in the video. So, be assured that there is no hidden drum set. Jump into Valhalla Calling or Nothing Else Matters next. Enjoy the ride!

I am a total PentaFryPlayer with some Voctave & Straight No Chaser thrown in! The top 3 a capella groups - Voice Play, Home Free and Pentatonix - are amazing! A bunch of solo vocalists who come together to create harmonic magic! Each has their own flair, but sometimes guest in each other's videos. I hardly listen to anything else anymore (except for some Dan Vasc, yessir!) unless it's 60s & 70s stuff... Music before auto tune.

Told you this one was 'funky'. I just love it. Always end up bopping around the kitchen when I play this one. More with amazing beatboxing that they do are Disney's "Friends on the Other Side" and Imagine Dragon's "Enemy".
Oooo... and "Seven Nation Army" by White Stripes! Much more creative 'percussion' than the White Stripes original! It's the third in their 'post-apocalyptic' style video, so you might want to watch their covers of "Warriors" by Imagine Dragons and then Aerosmith's "Dream On" before "Seven Nation Army".
Again - THANKS for the reaction! You point out several thoughts on the cover that I enjoyed. Also - beginning my journey through your playlists! I've liked what I've seen so far. Learning of a new artist or two.

Yes Voiceplay has some nice artist in it and some nice guest artists as well Yes that was Omar in the center he shows up in multiple of there videos.
    Voiceplay left to right
Geoff (pronounced Jeff) Castaluchi the bass singer with a huge range
    Eli (pronounced Ellie) Jacobson- Tenor
    J. None (has left the group for navy but is in a lot of there newer videos as a guest) Rap
Layne Stein (beat box and percussion and sometimes violin)
they do multi track most of there videos but yes every thing is voice in 95%+ of there videos they occasionally do violin they have one song with Boomwackers.
the group is 4-5 members with a guest most of the time to fill out special parts.
In your first video the newest member Cesar de la Rosa was there and they had J None as a guest. (Hellfire)
as for what to pick from them well they have a huge group of songs aand are currently doing about 1 a month with shorts as well. I think there is only one or two that i do not like.
My recomendation is to go through there history to find one that fits your channel. (they have a ton of seasonal as well)

One thing you could find out about this video is that someone else wrote J’s rap. The same guy wrote the rap in Valhalla Calling. He is a member of another terrific acapella group, Straight No Chaser. They might be fun for you to react to sometime, but if you do be sure to get one that says Official Video on their channel. VoicePlay will not cover a song if they don't think they can bring something new to it, yet they are always respetful to the original first and foremost. Geoff, just pronounced Jeff, and Layne, the beatboxer have done most of VP's arrangements. Eli, the bald rock tenor has been adding to the arrangement pool more lately as well. They all have a good ear for it, and they are so original, yet so true to the sound of the group.

Thank you! Yeah, I'm enjoying discovering them for the first time and I decided to not rush anywhere and just take it one at the time the vastness of what's to come is kind of exciting. I know what you mean with silly personalities, they don't take themselves too seriously and that makes it even cooler.

Great reaction! If you want something completely different and silly, try What Do We Do With A Drunken Sailor. Or if you want something that has broken many reactors, do Hoist the Colors. Hmmmm... non-pirate... Do Nothing Else Matters or Queen in 5 Minutes.

Name pronounced Jeff😊. And the one is Elle not Eli😅. I’m sure you have received others that gave pronunciation help. Love your reaction. Subscribed because of your insights.

If you think there was humor here, go check their cover of The Lion Sleeps Tonight. 😊

I've not a fan of rap either, really, though I appreciate the art. But my favorite rap songs are all from the 80s, or 90s. "Parents Just Don't Understand" and other DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince (Will Smith) era stuff. But I love it when J. None raps! LOVE IT!
Oh! That reminds me, if you decide to look into Home Free, another FABULOUS A Cappella group, I know I recommend "Man of Constant Sorrow" by them, but other good starters are "The Butts Medley" (sometimes called "The Butts Remix") and "Skull and Bones."

I totally second what you say of Home Free. They're as great as VP., even though VP are closer to my taste I sure can appreciate HF. And they're friends! 🙂

@@DavideBaroni Same here. I'm a total ham and love to play dress-up (which reminds, gotta see when the next Ren Faire near me is-I have a Faery costume that needs some use!) so I seriously vibe with Voiceplay. I'm not also not THAT into Country, with a few exceptions, including Home Free (though they do more than Country music)! And I was raised on Kenny Rogers, so was thrilled they got to do a song together! RIP Kenny!

@@DravenGal Yep, I understand. And I'd suggest another Home Free video that I just happen to love as much as the original song, which is "Brothers in arms". 🙂

Thanks, I wasn't sure how to say it and since I'm born European, I went for more what would be like a German approach. I'll fix it for the future videos! Thank you!
