A Paraklesis is the service of the supplicatory canon in the byzantine rite and it can be for a specific Saint or to the Virgin Mary to ask for their intercessions. The icon that depicts seven swords/daggers piercing the Virgin Mary's heart is called the "Softener of Evil Hearts" icon because it takes inspiration from when St Symeon said to the Theotokos upon the presentation of Our Lord in the temple; "Behold, this child is set for the falling and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sin which shall be spoken against. Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."
