So wonderful and strong. I love all people. I want to see more of us celebrating our culture, Please it's not a who or what is better it just is. The Kanaka Maoli and other indigenous people around the world must speek loud because we have been squashed in the past so some of our songs are lost but the heart of who we are beats fast and true and will not be denied. I live on the other side of the world, but my soul is moved by your beautiful chant. Thank you and keep going!
Nationality wise, they are though ;O A lot of ethnics Hawaiians died out, so the rest of us who are still alive rely on those born and raise in Hawaii to preserve our culture. Since there's no existing 'Full blooded' Hawaiian alive, the last one died a few generations ago. ;(
Forgot to put why in just the family! I only speak it within my family, because we believe that we shouldn't let others get to, in essence, 'tack onto the language we speak.' It's kind of hard to explain, but when we're out and about with strangers around us. We tend' to speak Hawaiian-Pidgin. Sorry to get so into it, but you gotta do what you gotta do.
blarghh .-. why did I say article ;x I meant an excerpt from a book. Not sure about that logic .-. I don't think there was shame to be Hawaiian (my grandma goes around saying she's hawaiian and rubbing it in people faces). Say more like... oppressed due to their limitations back in the 20th century.
And if you do know your friends mom's full background, then you must be obsessive with the Hawaiian culture or something just saying~ Also to add on, the Hawaiian spoken on the main island is still debatable on whether or not if it's the Hawaiian spoken before other countries started to gather in Hawai'i for it's rich rice plantations. Great Fact.
I'm dumb? I said FULL Hawaiian. I even put it in quotation marks. Pure Hawaiians are those with more than 50% Hawaiian blood and were born and raised in Hawaii. FULL BLOODED Hawaiians do not exist anymore. Look at the Hawaiian history -.- don't tell me right from wrong. I'm a Kealoha/Kapule Kid ~ so I know my heritage like the palm of my hands. AGAIN, LET ME SAY FULL BLOODED HAWAIIAN... shesh, learn how to distinguish Pure from Full before calling someone dumb.
Since' it's your culture, why do you keep referring to your friend. My grandma, herself, speaks Hawaiian (Ni'ihau way of speaking - not saying it's the true way of speaking) since' Hawaiian is a branch off of many Polynesian cultures (Tahitian and Samoan closely). Didn't I just say that the Hawaiian spoken today is debatable ~ even the one spoken in Ni'ihau (at least people like these are hoping/holding on to what little Hawaiian language is left)?
And yeah we were discussing Pure Hawaiians ~ if you had any time, how about read this article that promptly gives a comparison between full vs pure (i'll message it to you if you want). I just detest the fact that the upcoming Hawaiian generation is lacking a sense of their true culture identity and how much we're struggle to just preserve even our language. I speak from here and there with the Ni'ihau dialect. But only within the family.
An article? Haha. This is how I view it. This generation of Hawaiians have what the ones before like my parents and greandparents didn't have, pride. Pretty sure before hawaiians was shame for be hawaiian. What we need is cultural pride now.
@okesaita ~ Kanaka Maoli are disappearing because of this. These locals do this to make money not to connect with there ancestors. They are born and raised to do this because this is what tourist pay for. Only people that perform Native American chants/dances on the mainland are Native or at least part....Would be funny to see a bunch of white or black people acting like Natives : )
ohhhmygoshhh really -.- How are you gonna argue with a Hawaiian person himself? Pure and Full, when talking about Hawaiian people is different. If you go ask any Polynesian person out there, they will say 100% full blooded Hawaiian people do not exist anymore. They died out a few generations ago. And if that is said otherwise, let them take a blood test and you will find traces of other nationalities. One question: Do you know your friends mom's side FULL background? -.-
You do not understand the meaning of native. Theres a difference of being from Hawaii and Hawaiian.
@okesaita then again there are mixed Hawaiians too... Hawai'i is also a melting pot of different cultures...

that is not true. "real" hawaiians have actual hawaiian blood
Your right in order for you to Hawaiian your ancestor has to be Hawaiian
