There is a huge difference between Making for money and Making for the simple Love of doing it. The word Hobbiest has been shamed into the current definition of amateur / unskilled / etc. However imho the True Hobbiest drives Spirit forward whereas the professional unintentionally holds the Spirit back. The Professional has to conform but the True Hobbiest is totally Free to Experiment and let the metal go where it wants to go. Becoming one with the metal. So to speak !
If you have great customers you get to experiment as a professional as well. Or if you truly have a passion for the work you will experiment on your own time and dime and apply those skills to customer work.
I fully get what you are saying and I'm not arguing, just saying it isn't always the case.
Thinking outside the box is great but sometimes I find people the idea that's outside the box, wasnt done before for a reason. I have to give hobbyists credit, I see a lot of folks get really creative in ways I'd often not think to. Granted I don't often agree with those ways but it's still neat to see.
Steve is a great dude, crazy we both took Wrays class together for the first time at the same time a few years ago and he’s advanced to someone I def look upto in the community of shaping/machining. Thanks for the video

I think there's actually something more to be said for someone who can not only do the final product but who can also design and build the machines to accomplish that goal. My hat goes off to people like this.

Cert.Millwright, Fabricator and Mechanical Engineer with 11 patents in Machine Design/Construction etcetera... sorry for the long creed stuff... I was impressed by what I saw here... KUDO'S my friend, Sincerely, Seth 8:38 ( Yes... I am a hard core Hot Rod fanatic and NHRA ex. World Recird Holder... and I was born in 1960... lol )

HotRodHippie that’s one of the most fascinating parts of the hobby. There’s metal shaping, engineering, metallurgy with welding for high performance applications. Even the paint and body is fun too.
Yah, you don't need them but building you own powered tools is so much fun that I spend more time at that than on my cars and motorcycles Steve Sheoprd's hammer and pullmax are really great bits congrads to Steve

Oh I absolutely agree. I wish I had more time to build tools. I would love to build more of my own tools I just do not have the time.

I LOVED this video! I'm currently building a ridiculous english wheel that I call OVERKILL. I'm also currently collecting parts and designing a bead roller with the same name. Both have extreme throat depths. I am loving building my own equipment it's as fun for me as using it.
Glad you enjoyed it. I wish I had more space and time to make new equipment for myself. Hopefully I can get some new items built here on the channel eventually.

I added Steve's Instagram account to the description of the video. If you look on there he has a lot of photos and some video clips while he was building it. He posts regularly.
He started that probably before I was making videos. I don't remember for certain though.

Really Cool, a regular used Bridgeport is surprisingly affordable. I would like to know what Rice Machinery charges for their converted CNC models. Tin Man Tech a great power hammer and plans for their Little Powerhouse.

How much power, does a computer need to run cad programs, thanks for vid
It really depends on the program and the complexity of the models being created. Most CAD programs are fairly poorly optimized to make use of powerful computers in my opinion. I say that cause I was literally cursing at my computer for being so slow while editing something in CAD.
I'd recommend downloading Autodesk Fusion 360 and giving it a try. It is the CAD software I use and it is Free to hobbyists and start-up companies. I'm sure they list some hardware requirements somewhere. My hobby is custom computer building so I rarely check minimum specs on anything.

Steve.. please use some earprotection (3min:23) when using machines like that! later in life you'll thank me..
He wore hearing protection when running the power hammer for us. If you've ever run a Pullmax type machine you'd be surprised how quiet they actually are. I'm not disagreeing with you but I'm usually a stickler about hearing protection and even I don't always wear it when running the Pullmax.
American definition of fun: things you dont really need
Is fun ever a “Need”? You don’t “need” to go to the beach, hiking, etc, but they are fun things to do. How is building things for yourself that would cost you tens of thousands (or hundreds) to buy, not fun? Are you British? Isn’t the stereotype that “a Brit in their shed” builds all the “fun” stuff over there just because they can?
