I had the shareware version of Doom back in the mid-90's, but I never played the full game until last year. Since then I've played through Doom, Doom 2 and the expansions TNT and Eviternity. I still can't believe how fun and addicting this 28 year old game still is.
whaaaat???? map 19 is amazing. Every moment of it feels like an exploration, and at the same time every fight is so nerve wracking. They are a fair puzzle you must outsmart more than shoot mindlessly until every monster dies. And as you progress the map, every fight becomes more and more important since you have all the previous progress on your back. You screw up and you loose it. So by the end of the level, the hardest fight is hard because you truly don’t want to die, and the biggest monster to fight is your own nerve and mind. After beating map 19 UV max with fast monsters, I think map 19 it goes far beyond just playing the game. It becomes an incredibly fun test for you patience, skill, determination, creativity and self control. Also the level is visually beautiful, and the music is wonderfully dynamic and changes it´s connotation depending on the feeling you get from playing a certain section. Dehydration is one of the best maps I have ever played. But i totally understand why it can be exhausting. It took me 2 hours to complete pistol start, and so many more of practice.
Thanks for the review; I feel your criticisms are fair (even if I don't agree about the soundtrack comments :P ) I'm glad you enjoyed it as much as you did and felt you could rate it as highly as you did! Just want to push the credit for the boss itself over to Antares031 and Clay - Antares did the DeHackEd wizardry, and Clay did the sprites. In this instance I simply did the map. :) Cheers, it's been fun tagging along for your journey through Eviternity!
Just finished. What a great ride. Even for OCD me that since doom's inception, won't leave a level without 100, 100,100. Thanks stru for another great mod choice, keeping legacy doom alive, and for the usual great commentary. Can't wait for your next mod !
This is all DEHACKED? Christ... most I've managed was making the Plasma shoot Icon of Sin projectiles... what an amazing map pack, thank you for showing it to us, Stu.
OMG right about when I was going to compliment this WAD for being one of the best Doom map-packs ever, the level design started to become all gimmicky around map 12 or so.... what a shame.... the first levels were flowing so nicely and then it becomes this trash... constant die reload die reload level design after the first levels... that's it then, my absolute favorite Doom WAD ever remains AVACTOR (2018 cacoward winner)
I agree. Many encounters later on just become complete monster spam in awfully tiny arenas for "mUh DiFfIcUlTy!!!!!" It's complete bullshit level design, and the final boss needs a chunk of it's health taken off.
Doom 2, the game, does not have a mouselook function. From my window, if the Wad doesn't require it in order to play then there's no point bringing it up. Anyway, I liked all the custom monsters, and the Astral Caco is actually my favorite. :-)
What """better""" way to end a WAD but with a BioWare style boss that tanks eighty thousand rounds but puts you in the ground with only three! *_Whoopee!_* /s I'd rather play Dehydration again.
Here's my take. For megawads: Memento Mori II (only II, not the first one or Requiem which have no consistency whatsoever), Alien Vendetta, Revolution!(not very challenging but still worth experiencing), Scythe and Scythe II, Speed of Doom and Resurgence, the Back to Saturn X series, Going Down, Valiant(the real one, not the "vaccinated" version) and Ancient Aliens, Sunlust, Struggle: Antaresian Legacy, and of course Eviternity. I'm going to give ALT and Sunder honorable mentions, but they don't have much mass appeal potential. For shorter episodes: UAC Ultra, Hell Ground, Sacrament, Scythe X, Skillsaw's 2011 triad of Vanguard, Lunatic and Hanging Gardens, Aeternum, and perhaps Suspended in Dusk. For single maps: Frozen Time(my favorite map ever), Breach, Foursite, Lainos's works, Vaporware, and that Ancient Aliens fan map for Eternity I forgot the name of. I'm probably forgetting some but that's all that came to mind.
Back to Saturn X if they resisted the temptation of adding too many Revenants in tight corridors, it would be a top 5 Doom wads ever... what a shame... it's very challenging too, that was the map-pack that finally forced me to change from playing keyboard-only to using mouse
I would love to know if anyone still has version 1.00 of Back To Saturn 1... I lost my original version of the file, map19 started different, it was modified to become much less challenging

Props for finishing this, Stru. What a megawad, How can Doom ever die as long as there are mappers like Dragonfly and the others around?

I will miss you playing this game but this boss is call the light eternal
Name is Archangelus.
I mean... 10k health would be good enough.
What other Wads are in the conversation of greatest of all time?

@@TheWolfgangGrimmer what do you think of ashes?
@@MisterSpeedStacking I'm not familiar with that one. There have been a number of cool releases between my last comment and now though...
