6 years later and still helping people!! Legend! Many thanks!!❤
Had to change mine in a China buffet parking lot after I bought a new alternator but didn’t make it back home and this video is what saved me. 😂
HAHA that's a great story! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Dont know how a diy video can get any better than this. Thanks man.
Could explain the removal of the gray terminal cover as well as explain to soak all nuts an bolts with say wd40 as well as grease all threads incuding battery terminal clamps etc when putting this all back together ;) ps. could also say hand tension not hand tighten the neg to alt nut.
I have to say this is a GREAT video. Having to change my alternator in my 2007 Toyota Tacoma had me very worried. I watched your video a couple of times and felt I could do it. You provided the size sockets to allow us to save time. Thank you so much for the video.
Best how to out there. No one else talks about the belt tensioner hack with the drill bit! Awesome!
Awesome! thanks for watching and supporting the channel, You'll love my newer videos too!
Thanks friend, quick and to the point. My 17 year old boy did all the work I just help him when he was in problems, you know experience. I needed something like this so he could get confidence in the job ahead.
Thanks for the video! I was able to change my alternator on my 2006 tacoma in about an hour and saved myself $300.
Great video. My taco just died and I believe it's the alt. The battery icon came on and then shortly after that it just died. Thankfully I was able to pull to the side of the highway. Now it's time to get it home and get my hands dirty. You made the install look really easy. God bless ya man.
Good luck bro and thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Perfect, quick and to the point, thanks.
Thanks for the helpful video. My 16-year-old son and I were able to fix his Tacoma in a couple of hours. Our truck has 158000 on it. It started making a strange sound a couple of days ago and died today. Luckily, school is only a couple of miles home. He was able to make it home on a jump start. We spend a couple of hours in the garage this Tuesday night and he ready for school tomorrow. I also took mine in from the wheel well.
I'm glad it helped. I have several other videos on repairs just in case anything else breaks down. Do me a favor though and please share these vids with other tacoma owners as well. Best of luck!
thank you your video gave me the confidence to do this job on my '05 Tacoma....it was disabled in my driveway and I did it thanks to all your advice couldn't be happier! I think things change in different model years... my alternator would not come out of the top, but it came out by taking it through the wheel well under the battery tray very easily. I'm back in business!
Ooo9ooo
@Awharry36. On this 2007 I'm working on, I had to slide the alternator towards the radiator in order to slip it up away from the engine. I know this one I'm removing is the 130 amp alternator. The one in this video could be a 100 amp alternator, meaning it could be a tad smaller in diameter... Just sayin......
Good material, thank you! I watched several of these and this one was the best. The belt diagram really helped. Basically a two hour job for someone who rarely does auto repair.
Great to hear! please help my channel grow by sharing my vids with your tacoma friends!
Thanks, did this on my 2007 Tacoma! You saved me a lot of money!
Thanks very much for the informative video. With the help of a gentleman (Thad) and his son (Gabe) and your video I was able to get this done 200 miles from home in an O'Reilly's parking lot. Note: the alternator on my '04 was much more accessible and easy to change out. Without help, I would have struggled with this one. Thanks again.
Glad it helped! thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Thanks for this video! I couldn't ask for a better instructional video for this task. Great job.
Thanks for the video! It was right to the point and like how you kept mentioning the bolt sizes. I've done a lot of things to my Tacoma, but for some reason I always thought the alternator would be a difficult job, however you made it look very easy. Thanks
Completed the replacement this last weekend. Would have taken less than two hours except for a few unforeseen issues. Removing tension from the serpentine belt worked best for me with help. I had a heck of a time trying to see the hole for a pin to hold back the tension roller. I placed myself under the truck (no jacking) and had enough access to pry the tension roller back while my son removed the belt from the alternator. My second challenge was physically removing the old alternator. I was finally able to clear the stuff that couldn’t be removed or moved by ensuring the alternator was oriented to where the connectors were in the twelve o’clock position and the alternator was facing forward and tilted upward(front up back down). Video made it look easier than it was, but it did come out. My biggest problem had to do with the alternator itself. Carefully check the bottom nut plate. Apparently mine wasn’t pressed in and fell out while I was installing the new alternator. After a few attempts to install the bottom bolt I figured out that the nut was missing. I pulled it back out (new alternator went in and came back out without too much effort) to discover a missing nut. Thought the alternator was shipped that way so I dremmeled out the nut from the old alternator and tried to press it in to the new alternator. That didn’t go so well. Just happened to look under the truck and sure enough I found the new pressed nut.. If I had checked it before trying to install it would have been a fairly slick job. Reinstalling the serpentine belt worked best for me the same way I released it. Overall the video was extremely helpful particularly the way tool dimensions were stated for each task. Hope this helps any of you part time DIYers.
I appreciate your feedback and thorough run down! Please share my vids with your tacoma friends and help my channel grow!
KFlo's Tacoma Build I forgot to add the most important thing. My truck is a 2005 TRD V6
Thank you so much. I've watched this video twice and also along changing out my alternator for my 08 tacoma pre runner. This was very helpful. The only issue I had was getting the alternator out and new one back in. Also, couldn't get a less than 1/4 inch drill bit/Allen wrench in tension hole. I got it in but it didn't loosen the belt. So what I did, I just turned counter clockwise and held the ratchet while removing the belt off the alternator. The diagram you added was very helpful because the belt slipped off the water pump pulley. (Good thing I double checked before starting the Tacoma up).
I successfully changed the alternator without going through the wheel well. Only thing, the top bolt was hard to screw back in. I got it in almost all the way and alternator is tight just a bit of space where the washer spins a little. But the alternator is secure.
That breaker bar tip worked out great for unscrewing the bottom bolt which was a bit seized.
Thanks again. This gave me confidence to work on my truck and saved me over $200!
Awesome! I'm glad the video helped! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Excellent video! I especially like how you stated the size of sockets needed. I am gonna try this tomorrow 🤓
Just wanted to say "Thanks!" for all your Tacoma vids! Relatively easy, even for me! I've been wrenching for about 20 years and have learned that however the long the "internet" tells me a job will take (taking my time and getting drunk while doing so, of course), it will take me 2-3 times that long while staying sober! 🤣 This job though? Spot on! 👍
I appreciate the kind words, brother! The best way to do any of these jobs is definitely while enjoying a cold brewski! 🍻
Great video, helped me change my dead alternator in a couple hours right in the driveway. As said below, getting the old alternator out was the hardest part. But after figuring out how to get it out, the new one slid right in.
Another replacement here all thanks to your video. I went with a Odyssey 34R-PC1500T battery, and a Denso 210-0572 re-manufactured alternator for my 2006 Tacoma TRD Sport
Great to hear! Nice work!
Thanks for the video. This was very helpful. However, I had to pull the alternator from the sidewall. I could not get it out from above no matter which way I turned it or flipped it.. The sidewall was easy and only required 3 push screws to be removed. I would have had more room with the tire turned outward but at that point the car was immobile. Also, use caution when reinstalling the belt. Mine was off a little bit somewhere and ended up snagging something and eating itself. So another $35 and my alternator was fixed! Thanks again!
thank you Jim V!! I also could not get mine out from above but it came right out on my 2005 the way you described perfectly. I always read the comments and found yours, and it saved me. ALSO - your tip on the belt saved me, I had it on the alternator just fine, but my final check of it all indicated it was misaligned over the fan pulley so you saved me my belt too. Cheers from upstate NY
Me too. Pull from sidewall. This comment helped me!
Your sidewall tip helped a lot!
Thanks Karl! Your video was spot on and really helped me and my father-in-law get my ‘06 Tacoma going again.
Glad I could help! Right on!
Thanks so very much for your video on how do do this. It was very informative, and you walk us through all of the steps. Really great content my friend. I just did my alternator, lower, and upper idler pulleys. Threw it all back together as you demonstrated and my 2011 🌮 seems to be running great again. Thanks again!!
Awesome! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
This Is a spot on video. nothing was left out very well done. thank you
Very Helpful! The second video in as many months that I've used to repair my 06.
I'm glad it helped. Please help me out by sharing my vids to your tacoma friends!
Another Great video...
Just did the alternator on my 2008 FJ..that rear nut was a little trouble maker..
Will keep this video for my 2014 Tacoma...
What caused all that ulgy rust...
None here in S. Ariz..
Thanks for sharing
Glad you like it and found it useful! I do have a bunch of other Please share, like and subscribe to help my channel grow. Unfortunately, i live in the rust belt so all that road salt is quite harsh.
The instructions for removal and installation are excellent.
OMG.....Thank you, very well spoken and u kept it simple and to the point. Because of you I no longer have to ask someone to do it it was easy peasy 🙂
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for a quick tutorial that gave me enough information to change my alternator on my 07 Tacoma.
Glad it helped!
Just finished on my 2007 Tacoma. Went step by step as you did and it worked out great. Thank you for the help!
Glad it helped!
You saved me 100's of dollars! Just got the charging system error light on my 2016 tacoma! SUBBED!

How did you know it was going out mine just started making a whinning noise
Thank you, got the job done on my 2012 Prerunner with your help.
Awesome! thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
I just replaced my alternator using your video. Thank you very much!
Glad it helped!
Thank you this helped me change out my dead alternator. Replaced to a new one with 130 amps. Thanks from a storm chaser!
I'm glad it helped brother! Please help my channel by sharing my vids with your Tacoma friends!
Did you have trouble getting the 130 Amp in or out? I've detached the wiring harnesses like in the video but I'm having great difficulty getting my old 130 amp alternator out due to the oil catch. Truck is 2007 taco v6 sport
Thank you! Did this today on my 2012 PreRunner 4.0. Went great. Thanks for the video!
Great to hear!
Thank you for this great video. I follow it step by step and I did not have a problem I even replaced the serpentine belt
That's awesome! I'm glad it worked out four you
Thanks for your video! I was able to fix my 06 Tacoma following your video!
Glad to help! Please share my vids with your tacoma friends

Sweet! I'm sure you'll like it! thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Awesome quality on your video I’m removing my alternator right now and your video is helping more than I expected thanks so much by the way I never usually comment on RUclips videos so that says a lot
I'm glad my vid helped out, Cody! Please help my channel grow by sharing my vids with your Tacoma friends!
Excellent video with great step by step pointers. Thanks for posting.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching
Great video! Helped me tackle this job on my own truck. Thanks!!
Glad it helped! thanks for supporting the channel!
This video gave me the confidence to replace my alternator.
Sure thing dude, i'm glad it helped!
You wouldn't happen to know the torque specs for the bolts that hold the alternator in place?
Turns out it's 33 lbs ft
Thanks for the tutorial. your video helped me a lot and my Toyota Tacoma 2007🙏🙏😊
Great to hear! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Seems like it is multiple times easier than changing it out on my 2011 V6 Camry. It required draining the cooling system, removing the entire front end; and removing passenger side front tire and an access panel to wiggle one hand in to remove and install fasteners.
Thanks for that little trick with the bit, that worked out nice.
You bet. I'm glad it worked out!
This was a ton of help. Thank you for this video!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Excellent "How To"....Thanks...very helpful! 👍👍
Is there a trick to popping the plastic cover off of the negative wire so I can unbolt it from the alternator
No real trick. It's just a matter of getting under that rubber piece and separating it
Could you do another video on just getting that little green thing off I’m trying pliers screwdriver and I can’t get it off
Straight to the point vid I love it. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THAT SONG THO???
It's Raven & Kreyn x Moji x Illusion - Dream Forever
@@KFloTacoma THANK YOU!!
I think I love you. Thank you for getting to work tomorrow.
gr8 vid! Will these steps be the same for a 3rd gen 2017 Tacoma? Any differences I should be aware of before hand?
I also have a question, if you ever decide to change your engine could you do a video on that as well?
Yea absolutely!
thank you again im having to take out the alternator to get to that one bolt on the ac compressor i dont want to strip it because i cant disconnect the hvac hoses for this job
Awesome, I'm glad this video helped as well!
Ended up making my first video on RUclips because of this job. Gave you a s/o in the video on my page
I just watched it bro, thanks for the shout out! I also just subbed to you. That job looked like a pain but it was very clever to just have everything lose enough to maneuver to that sensor!
Thanks man, I appreciate the help.
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel
You may be mistaken I don’t know about other years, but my 2010 Tacoma would not allow removal of the alternator from top side. It practically fell out when I discovered it would come out from the fender. Well all I had to do was replace some of the plastic pushpins to hold the rubber splash guard in place, please share this on your RUclips channel.
Thanks for your comment! I couldn’t get mine out the top but that wheel well trick was pretty slick. I have an 06. I wonder if it’s the 130amp alternators are a bit larger?
@@gofish2233 ahh could be 👍🏼 mines the 130A one too 👏🏼
Kflo!!! Thanks dude you make some great videos!!!!!!
I appreciate that!
Thank you so much. Going to try it today
Thanks for watching and supporting the channel

Thank you great video, I needed help and found it in this video.
Good job! Thanks for the info!!🙂
Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Thx for the video, It helped a lot.
Super helpful. Well done.
Glad to hear it! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
What year is your Tacoma and at what mileage did you replace the alternator? Thanks for the very good video.
My truck is at 135000 miles and is a 2009.
@@KFloTacoma how many miles ya got on it now? How has the replacement alternator held up?
thank you but Iwould like to know how much tension do you have after change alternator?
Tension is the same. The belt tensioner is what controls the constant tension on that serpentine belt. It's independent from the pulley of the alternator.
@@KFloTacoma that'd because I have a Tacoma 99 and the Voltage it's 14.6 sometimes it's 15 . So I do know if this is normal . Sorry for My writing.
I think you meant voltage then instead of tension. The older tacomas like yours is at a 14 volt system. That's working good so no need to worry
Thank you so much! This helped sooo much!
Glad it helped! thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Thanks, your video helped me alot
Glad to hear that! thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
Are you sure thats a negative terminal? I thought it is b+ or positive
Don't have to remove the skid plate to get to the tensioner you can get to it with a long ratchet or breaker bar from the top
Awesome video
Detailed with great video footage...nice work!
Thanks man! if you can sub to my channel and share any of my vids with your tacoma friends, that would really help me out!
Excellent video. How long did it take, top to bottom? 1 hour?
It took me a little bit longer because i was filming. If I wasn't then it would probably be around 1.5 hours.
What's The Total Time Did You Do It In?
This is will probably take 2-4 hours depending on seized bolts and skill level
Got a question.
The plastic cover on the black wire, what’s the trick to getting that off?
Does it just pull off by hand, or do you need to pry with a screwdriver or something?
Mine is being stubborn.
Thanks.
It's basically just a stiff rubber sleeve, maybe use a hair dryer to make that a bit softer and just get under it with a small screw driver to pry it up
Really good video
Did I miss what year Tacoma this is?
hello sir, my battery lights are on my dash board for the first time on my 2006 Tacoma. I have a confident to do it myself instead of taking it to the shop and they charge too much.i also did a test that I took off my negative cable from the battery while engine is running and the engine just went off . please advise
I would recommend checking the individual wires on the cable from the positive side. There may be a wire that got disconnected or worn out that may cause the same battery light to go on.
Good video it helps me with my 96 tacoma
Thanks you video
Thanks man! if you can sub to my channel and share any of my vids with your tacoma friends, that would really help me out!
Question for the creator(or community):
This video was super helpful!! However, I’ve noticed since the fix, if my Tacoma sits for a day and I go to turn the AC on… the initial start causes a loud “clunk” noise. Subsequent “on/off” attempts do not create this noise. Did I do something wrong during install? Thank for any help/guidance.
It sounds like it may be the magnetic clutch engaging for the compressor on the AC. You did torque down all of the bolts to proper spec right?
@@KFloTacoma WOw! Thanksf or the quick reply! I forgot to torque down. Went pretty tight... But I'm on it! I also checked out your other video "AC Diagnosing(Tacoma DIY / How to) -- man! Swapping out the horn relay for the MC relay worked!! No more noise!!! Thanks for all you do/share!!
Great video.
Thanks, very helpful!
I'm glad it helped out. Please share my vids with your Tacoma Friends!
Got all the way to the 14mm securing the alternator. Was able to break the top 14mm loose but cant get the lower. Any tips? Already hit it with PB blaster and tried multiple angles but it requires an extended socket and I'm doing my best not to strip it
I would advise a socket extension and a 6 point socket so that it doesnt round the bolt head. As you see from the vid, I did use a pipe on the socket wrench to help break that bolt loose. You can do the same.
Great video👍
Thanks man!
I am halfway through changing mine but cannot get it out of the engine bay through the gap. How did u get yours out?
Slide it through to the front or you can get it out through the wheel well with the tire removed
Do you go with a high amp alternator?
Is this the same for 3rd gen Tacoma’s?
Not the same, but the steps will be similar
Thank you
You're welcome! thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
I noticed you seem to have installed a high output alternator. Did you have to change your belt size to accommodate the smaller pulley on the alternator for the 2005 Tacoma ?
No. The current tensioner had enough of a swing to accomodate
You kept saying negative wire on the alternator but isn’t that the positive wire that connects to positive on the battery? I don’t think there is a dedicated neg wire for the alternator. At least that’s how it is on my 3rd gen.
Good video
Thank you very much
You are welcome!
