In hopes of settling things a bit, the song was actually written by Russ Ballard, who later worked with KISS on several albums. Argent was the first to record it in 1973, then Petra remade it in 1977 and again in 1985, then KISS did its own version in 1991 for the movie, Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey.
As a side note, Kiss also recorded it twice...the first time for their '82 lp, "Creatures of the Night". Their version from the Bogus Journey soundtrack is differentiated as "God Gave Rock n Roll to You II.
I played this song on Kenyan Radio back in 83. Got the head of Kenyan government radio to sermon me to explain how rock and roll praised Jesus. I refered him to Colossians 1:15-20... keep rocking!

Jesus will be calling us to meet Him in the air soon all you saints...I anticipate this will be one of the songs we'll be singing on the way up! Maranatha!
Actually, if you look up Argent God Gave Rock N Roll to You, the song was recorded in the late 60's because there's a live clip of them performing it back in 1968.
Spectacular! I saw Petra in Burlington, Vermont back in the mid 80s and fanastic! The dried ice/ smoke coming off the stage smelt like chocolate. What super sounds.
I'm sure that a lot of people don't know that the producer of this Petra album(and song) was Austin Roberts, who is better known for performing the original Scooby Doo and Partridge Family theme songs and this sort of has a similar feel to it while it still rocks at the same time. You can hear his voice in the background vocals working with Greg Volz pretty nicely.
I liked PETRA.......I was never a christian, but I was a HEAD EAST fan, which basically morphed into PETRA..........good song from a very good christian rock band.
What happened was that John Schlitt was fired from Head East in 1980 while having a lot of addiction problems. Five years later Greg X. Volz left Petra, Bob Hartman met John (by now a Christian and clean) and invited him to become the new singer of Petra. The rest is Petra history.
are you out your mind? Argent released the song in 1972, Petra covered the song in 1977 & 1984 and Kiss in 1992, it means Kiss covered the song 20 YEARS AFTER
I’ve heard all Argent, Petra, and KISS do this song and I still have no favorites because they are all different. I like how Argent does it a little softer than the others, Petra makes a build-up to the song, and KISS must have practiced daily to have everything and everyone when they sang this. That is the awesome thing about bands, they have to do things their way even it’s a song that has been done before.
This is the version I got to sing at my talent show. Because kiss was not Christian. I appreciate y'all making it so I could sing the songs I wanted when they weren't originally allowed. Thank you. Music makes my world go round. I love you.
@@jerrycrawford538 Russ Ballard wrote it in early 70's back when some bands were not afraid of a song about God;ie. Presence of the Lord by Eric Clapton, then Glenn Kaiser also!!
@exigency3 I love it when someone actually does the homework. I never knew that about the term "rock and roll." I'm very thankful that God is less interested in genre's and more concerned with the heart. Rock On!
According to Greg himself on the Petra: Farewell DVD, he appeared on Come and Join Us as a guest artist, and shortly after was asked to become the official vocalist for Petra.
that's ok, in fact many people believe this song was really wrote by Kiss because they made it popular, even more popular than the original, nice to meet you, God bless and long live Rock n' Roll!!!
I really love this classic rock version of this song. Actually all Petra's songs from the 70s and early 80s are great. This song sounds very Beatles influenced lol..
I'm a church going person and love God and Jesus with all my heart. I like this version as much as the KISS version. I have been a fan of KISS for over 38 years. If you don't like KISS I respect that.
OK, let us set the record straight here. This song was written by Russ Ballard, guitarist and vocalist for the band ARGENT, led by former Zombies keyboardist Rod Argent. Petra (they covered this twice the other is from the album Beat The System - a rather bland cover than this one), Bride and even KISS will never claim this is their original. Go ahead search the internet and all credit will be given to Russ Ballard.
its no difference if we PRAISE JESUS with old gospel blues or rock--true PRAISE AND WORSHIP IS BORN IN LOVE-IN LOVING JESUS AS THE ONE HE IS IS.....OUR KING HALLELUJAH AMEN!!! LETS JESUS PLAY THE LEAD GUITAR IN YOUR LIFE,ALWAYS AND FOREVER
I hate that so many think that Kiss wrote this song. Neither do I like that people think Petra wrote it (even though their version is by faaaar the best). Argent are the true writers of this masterpiece :)
I had not heard this song until probably the 90's,........I know for sure that i grew up in the 70's with this song,However, Argent, was the band that sang and preformed this beautiful song..Not sure when Petra came along?
I love this song, and the fact that we have different versions to listen and to enjoy, depending on what kind of rock you like. I respect Petra's versions of this song (this and the live version). Kiss version is OK. Bride's version is interesting and I like it too.
Great song from what I think was their best album. Sure, the production values got better, but this one had more heart and better songs than anything else of theirs I've heard.
@edward7771000 petra covered it. I looked it up, kiss covered it too. a band called argent wrote it in 1973. It was on petras album come and join us in 1977.
I forgot how prog Petra was in the 70s. This is proof that at least one Christian band was up there with Yes and the other groups of their day. Much different from 80s Christian rock that had a quite distinctively different sound (including Petra during those years).
I used to hate Vinyl records. There was no replay button you had to move the arm back to the beginning of the track hoping that you found the right spot with which to begin the song and play one more time. THANK GOD FOR CD'S!!!

The irony there is that Greg Volz sang with Argent as well (that high pitch scream in "Hold Your Head Up" sounds familiar to any Petra fan)
As a side note, Kiss also recorded it twice...the first time for their '82 lp, "Creatures of the Night". Their version from the Bogus Journey soundtrack is differentiated as "God Gave Rock n Roll to You II.

Petra is one of the best bands ever. They have a ton of good songs. This song is one of the greatest!
That’s the truth. John 3:16
Yes. But this is a cover. Is a nice cover though . The original song was released in 1973 by a British band called Argent
best version of this song in my humble opinion
Yes, Petra did it later in the 80s. But this is longer and more rock oriented.
The best rendition ever....
This song, man. God gave rock'n'roll to you! Put it in the soul of everyone.
I love You guys
this is the song that turned me onto rock n roll
This version has that 70's sound to it like the original version. I love it.
Thank You God Bless You All Rock On 👍🇺🇸
Listening to Petra makes me feel like I am having an out of body experience, and I'm soaring to the heavens! :-P. Just had to share!

This is my favorite version because of the major and minor arpeggios in the intro. It is super fun and challenging to play on bass.
Si! Dios es fuerte! Y todo es por la gloria de El! : )
The very first actual Christian rock i ever heard. A classic indeed. This song started it all. The Jesus movement.
What was Larry Norman, chopped liver? 😁 But this is a good recording!
Great song from vintage Petra featuring Bill Glover on drums!
Bill Glover

Still powerful and beautiful in November 2021!!! Gloria a Dios🙌🏽
My parents didn't like this stuff but I was listening to this on the radio.
I know Russ Ballard wrote this song for his band, but Petra's 1977 version and reprise at the end to me are still the best of all versions!
Thanks be to God

Yes, Argent did write. specifically Russ Ballard. Go to Wikipedia and search Russ Ballard. He wrote hits for MANY people.

Being a KISS fan, I must say that I'm not disappointed to hearing this version. It's got that retro feel to it :)

No. For me: 1. Argent 2. Kiss 3. Petra
