Worth mentioning is that the key reason Charles Darwin was on the Beagle was as a companion to Capt Fitzroy. Being that ships captains of the time often maintained command by distancing themselves from the crew Capt Fitzroy desired some person on board he could confide in on the voyage, thus apart from his survey & science duties this was the reason Darwin was aboard
@Ray Turvey it is extremely easy to question whether the BBC meets Lord Reiths intellectual principles which did include entertain. However as someone who has lived abroad in various places I can confirm that British television including the BBC is vastly better in terms of the quality of its output, documentaries, science and nature and the likes of BBC 4, trust me.
Crystal Palace Park is a real gem and everyone who uses it is very protective of it. They wanted to build a big cinema complex there a few years ago but people got together and defeated it. And thank goodness fir that. People power!
You hit the nail on the head with your remark about the area being fog free. I went to school in the Crystal Palace area during the great smog of 1953 and it was amazing how the fog disappeared as the bus climbed up to Beulah Hill.
I have been waiting for this one, when I tell people about the Dinosaurs of Crystal Palace they look as if I'm mad, it's one of my favourite places, great video Joolz
I remember going up to Crystal Palace park (in the 90s) and sitting near those big steps, and finding a piece of molten glass just in the grass there. I still have it.
I've lived in Crystal Palace for 26 years and I didn't know half the stuff you talked about. Brilliant! More South London stuff plz I wish you could have seen the old cycle shop on Central Hill run by an old couple in their 70's. It was like walking into a shop from the 1930's. Sadly closed about 10 years ago
I do adore watching these and dream of better days when travel was easier, they will return again, as indeed will I to the land of my ancestors. Thank you Joolz
So pleased you got to Sarf London. I worked at the CP Sports Centre in the 80,’s Loved that Croydon got a mention. From a Croydon gal living in Perth Western Australia! Always learning! So much history! Thanks for sharing 🤗
Blast from the past for me seeing those dinosaurs. I used to go visit an uncle who lived in Dulwich Village and one of my earliest childhood memories is Crystal Palace on a roasting hot day.
Excellent video, Jools. I've been waiting for you to do a video of Crystal Palace for ages. The Brunel water towers were demolished during the Second World War to stop Luftwaffe pilots from using them as reference points.
My girlfriend's band performed on that stage (4:50). The interference from the TV mast into the amplifiers was so strong that they had to play basically acoustic. BTW Love the "Yogi Bear" bit! And I saw Jimi Hendrix there in pouring rain, IIRC.
From what I've seen in other articles about the Crystal Palace they moved the structure by taking it apart then rebuilt it on the new site. The structure was only ever intended to be a temporary one for the exhibition, so it was designed and built to be taken apart and recycled. That made moving it easy.
Great video, as always Joolz! On the 30th November 1936, my parents watched The Crystal Palace burn down and later went back for a lump of melted glass to keep as a souvenir (err, after it had cooled down!). They had noticed the blaze from their homes in Forest Hill. They said it was a terrible conflagration and the heat was intense. Rather a sad ending for the great building, but it was getting in a bit of a ropey state by then anyway...
What a wonderful channel this is. No one tells the history of places in and around London in such illustrious way. How very nice... Subscribed some time ago.
As always, the great Joolz brightens up a dreich Glasgow afternoon! I'm moving back to London soon, I'm going to furnish you with a few pints at The Engineer as recompense for all your great work.
Crystal Palace was a big part of my childhood and youth. Live in Australia now but have a walk round every time I come home. Most recently in July had the English petanque championship at the time.
Always the best. Great info jokes and a memory I can’t believe. Of course I’m from America so you could be saying anything Londony. Hehe. Thanks so much. Please tells us that you explained “rosebud” to Kye
Who watches TV anymore!? Thanks for another cool tour around London, we tried to get to the Crystal Palace area on a previous trip, but ended up at Kew Garden's Palm House instead, should have headed south instead of west!
You just made my Sunday absolutely wonderful, Joolz! Another brilliant video. I so appreciate all the hard work that goes into making these videos: deciding on what to present, researching it, scheduling with either Kai or Simon to do the filming, etc. And doing your best to work around the restrictions imposed by this (expletive deleted) COVID.
how can any one not know the story of "Pickles", well, here in albion anyway.there's a meddle they gave to "animals", in the war years, can't remember what they call it. don't know where you are Lulu, but there's a few animals who got a "gong", especially a "homing pigeon".
@@blackbob3358 Cher Ami was the most famous of the pigeons that recieved the French Croix de Guerre (WW1.) Her story is incredible but since the 40s it has been the Dicken Medal that has been awarded. They are all great stories.
It's fascinating to see where Crystal Palace used to be and to imagine how grand and magnificent it was - we have a crystal palace here too, but it's just a chinese restaurant
Please keep them coming. I am learning so much plus seeing places ok now going back 92 years, Thank You. From Beryl Now in Sydney. I was born in Marylebone Australia.❤🦘🐨🦜🇦🇺🇬🇧
So many happy memories of visiting my grandparents, who lived in Orleans Road just off from Central Hill, as a child. Then taking my own boys to visit them as they were growing up. Wonderful stuff Joolz.
Thank you Joolz for yet another episode of your fab guides. We lived in London in the lat 90s, came back in winter 2019/2020 with our kids for a visit and now get to travel from the comfort of our lounge in NZ. We thank you and will shout you a pint or more on paypal (c'mon viewers you should too!).
Thank you. I really enjoyed that. Used to enjoy going to see the dinosaurs when I was a child. Can you do a guide on Dulwich and especially East Dulwich please
Thank you Joolz, Watching from New Zealand, even since we discovered your London Walks videos, we cant get enough of them, full of historical information and you make it so entraining at the same time, PLEASE keep them coming
Thanks joolz for the excellent bite size history of crystal palace..You give it warmth, fun that adults and children can enjoy together,,,, please can you do a tour of croydon.
Although I love your videos and have been a subscriber for a long time, this is the one I have been looking forward to. Those dinosaurs are now rightly protected and I wish someone would do something remarkable with the most beautiful train station arches you will ever see.
I used to play around Crystal Palace when I was a kid (in the 60's). Before they built houses on the track bed we were able to walk through the tunnel and at the far end there was/is a big block of flats. The underpass was still open then and it was used as an air raid shelter during WW 2. The dinosaurs were made of brick with a render on the outside and we used to hire a boat (rowing boats then) and get on to the islands they were standing on. The bigger ones had an opening in the belly part which allowed us to get inside.
Great episode, thanks Joolz. We didn’t know much about Crystal Palace besides it’s fiery demise. And the story about the Origen of Madam Tousode as art tutor and later death mask maker to the French Royale was an interesting revelation!
History lessons, or tours, will never come any better than this. The presentation could not be bettered. I look forward to many, many more. Bring it on!
I always look so forward to your video's Joolz. They are so educational. As always another great one! Your friend, Steve Bonds from Bay City, Michigan USA
I used to live around here and I miss it so much - jam packed with history and a very attractive place to boot. Gutted they closed down The Grape and Grain, what a pub that was.
Can't believe it. Was just thinking this morning how great a video about Crystal Palace would be. Hope you took in the statue of the stag with the very droopy antlers
another lovely video full of fascinating historical information. but I always love the music in your videos. it always seems appropriate to the area or subjects you are talking about. this music was great.
