CARPAL TUNNEL prevention stretches...PLEASE let my pain be your gain...not just for musicians.
Carpal Tunnel Prevention Stretches - Drumming #StephenTaylor #BestDrumLessons
See I'm a mechanic and saturday weekend warrior racing in some SCCA autocross events and we do suffer from Carpal Tunnel because of repetitive wrist motions... this helped me a lot. decided not to comment until I tried it for a couple months(8). It works and conditions your hands and arms believe me. no more shaking, cramping or tensing up in my muscles :) *TJ APPROVES*
So glad to know the stretches were helpful. If some of the issues continue, you may want to see an A.R.T. provider in your area. I haven't had issues since. Thanks for sharing!
***** Most definitely would!
I think more pro drummers should discuss these types of subjects. Once again. Your the man. Stephen
I badly needed this advice. I thought my hands had a problem while I was playing drums. Now i know my warm up is wrong.
This is easily going to be one of the most important music lessons I ever have, thank you.
Glad it helped Cole!
This video has giving my drumming new life when i thought about quitting, from now on i'm staying in the game.
Thanks Stephen! I am a Drummer and also a full-time Welder and I think that this will really help. Rock On!!!
I am doing these wrist stretches right now. These come in handy with six stroke rolls and paradiddles
This is a huge contribution to the Music community, I have been sharing this information with other musicians as well, thank you so much for you insights!
OMG Thanx man....didn't know about the thumb stretch!
Carpal tunnel syndrome,is a syndrome that should fear all the young drummers, who develop speed over technique.Strong hands that play softly, shall NOT present injuries.A good warm up to increase blood flow and decrease muscle stifness, and a good strech to loose the tension are your best allies.Never skip them guys:)
thanks stephen, that was very helpful. it took me six years of drumming to realise the importance of warming up and stretching! love your channel! :-)
haha, I'm 4 more years down the line I guess before realising things
Thank you for this video! I just tried the stretches for the first time and the pain in my thumb, which has been my constant companion for months now, immediately lessened. Such a relief! Will definitely incorporate them in my daily routine. Hopefully they'll make the pain go away completely.
Glad they help. If the pain persists def gp see a professional
thank you so much man, I had this pain from hitting the snare all the same. i think those exercises are really going to help.
For the last 2 months both of my hands and forearms has been vibrating and tingling. I did these stretches and it stopped immediately! I thought I was having a stroke. Thank you!!
Really good man, i play guitar and this is exactly what i was looking for. Cheers.
I've had buzzing problems in my arms while playing for a while now. Now I'm using these stretches and I haven't had any problems anymore. Thank you so much for this video, I owe you one. ;)
Hell yeah man! also, stay away from oak sticks! That vibration will damage you. Hickory and maple is the deal in sticks!
Thank you so much for posting! Even as I type this I can feel a difference. Also, when warming up, instead of playing; slow tempo “full extension” legato strokes first, try playing 32 measures of 4/4 triplets at 56 bpm and playing every stroke at about a 1 inch height. Wish it didn’t take years of carpal tunnel to become extremely focused on ergonomics.
Glad it helped!
Thank you soooo much!
so awesome. thank you so much for sharing. i knew some but man the pulling the fingers in pairs has helped so much
I have tingling in my fingers when I play, so I'm going to give these techniques a try. Thanks for posting Stephen!
I'm glad to say that in 6 years of drumming and 11 years of guitar playing, I've never sustained any injuries like that; and I definitely wouldn't say I have particularly good technique in either. Though I've been aware of these injuries, I never really considered them as an actual risk (quite foolishly). But I'm glad this vid has got me thinking about this and got me more prepared to prevent it. Thanks a lot, Stephen. You're probably the most helpful and informative of youtube teachers :D
Thank you. Experiencing a lot of carpal tunnel issues in my left hand and these are good stretches
Thank you.
You just helped my forearm pain so much, and saved me a trip to the doctor!
Just found your video. Very helpful and informative. I'm a drummer and now having this kind of injury on my right arm which really affects my drumming. Will surely start to incorporate your stretching excercise into my daily life. Thanks again Stephen.
Great great stuff Stephen!
I'm a bassist with a similar problem, and that helped alot. Thanks !
Thanks Stephen, I play a lot of bebop and use the push/pull technique and I am just now starting to feel a burn in my arm and wrist, but these exercises do work and I am so glad you made this video because this is a very important topic.
Kick ass idea man, just tried it out and Im really feeling the "oil change" aspect.
I do all of these before I do anything because of a injury. I cracked my growth plate in my elbow, so it helped no matter what. I had a lot of tendentious problems and my doctor showed me all of these.
thank you for this info. About to embark on a 25 show tour on drums and started to think my drumming career was over just as it began to take off. Drummed since I was 6, I am now 27 and didnt take much care of my body til this year.
Taking care of your lower back, shoulders, ankles, and achilles are important too. If you're using the heel toe technique you definitely want to take care of the tendons.
Bless, I sense a true desire to share knowledge
thank you. i had surgery done for my right hand and by doing this i hope i can prevent from the left one getting worse. ima drummer too so the surgery really sucked. but anyway, thanks again. great video!
So important... Thank you Stephen!
Thankyou for posting this. Much appreciated.
Thanks
wow thank u my wrists have been killing me i been up at night in pain did these stretches and i feel so much better Wow Thank u so so much
Glad it helped. Go see a doctor if the pain persists
This is great 👍
Good stuff mate! Thanks for sharing the wisdom
This is really good! Thanks, Stephen!!
You bet Jonas!
Good stuff man, I'm appreciative of the time you took to make this video! thanks
It should help, years ago, a doctor said he has to operate all my fingers convinced I had tendonitis (I'd wake up with fingers squeezed into a fist barely able to extend them). I develop software for a living, I only started drumming an year ago.
Scared I wouldn't be able to work for a month, I then found 2 things:
1) These stretch exercises
2) Cissus RX (body builders use that food supplement) - took it for 1 month only
Both helped tremendously, I'm happily working & drumming every day.
Thanks bro !
You bet!
dude, thanks a lot for this vid !! i started getting some pains in my left elbow, gonna give these a try!
Thanks for that!!!!+
Thank you. Its very helpful
Glad it helped!
I had a panic attack while reading an article about carpal tunnel. I'm not joking. I fell on the floor from the sheer panic. Thanks for the exercises.
Thanks for this. Good stuff.
great advice and message man.
Thank you so much!
Thank you!
great advice.. thanks
Ahhhhhh 😌 thanks (:
Good info, will be useful.
Great video! This is very important information every drummer should care about! I'm also a cyclist who already got injured, so I developed a habit of stretching myself daily, but I never knew what I should do due to the drumming. Too bad it's got so little views! Have you had any back pain or was your problem only in your arms/hands?
The first video on the channel!! Look at that resolution
thought this was a great video!!
very informativ.
but since you mentioned the moller technique...
could you maybe make a video on that technique?
much love frome switzerland
Actually it helps since the first time you do it, the muscle got tense without strech... So like, fav and share! txh!
Hey Stephen! Great video! I was wondering if you could do a video on stretching your leg muscles too?
I don’t understand your differentiating between carpal tunnel and “repetitive strain Injury” they are one and the same thing, as carpal tunnel is caused by repetitive wrist movements. Sure it may have a specific name when it is confined to a certain area but it is still a “repetitive strain injury” none the less. I first got it it years ago whilst working in a poultry processing factory, it went away after physiotherapy, have only recently started drumming and it has come back. I do stretches everyday but isn’t getting any better, might even be a bit worse. Doctor told that years ago that as soon as I resumed any kind of repetitive movement it would come back. She was correct. I find it very inhibiting as can only play a short while and am worrying the whole time which causes loss of concentration.
Correct, but not all repetitive motion injuries are carpal tunnel. I'm no doctor, mind you, and your doctor is correct...if you resume an activity with having done nothing to fix the issue at hand, it will come back. That's what physical therapy is all about. So yes, this is a repetitive motion injury. No, mine was not carpal tunnel, even though it was in the wrists. Yes, most of these wrist issues are fixable without surgery by physical therapy, stretching, massage therapy etc. Of you are having these types of issues, I would suggest going to see a certified A.R.T. specialist that specializes in the upper body. It was like changing for me and has been for many of my students.

Crazy just saw this and my hands have been hurting lot
Hi Stephen! is this really your first vid on YT...???
well it's super usefull!!
Do you have any tips for ankles: I play a lot clave with my left foot and I often have pain and even sometimes edema on the external face of my ankle... I'm not asking any treatment but maybe simple exercices to prevent or any tips to use my left feet in a proper way .
Thank you man!
Not my first but an early one. If you're having regular pain, I would start by looking at your setup and how your feet are resting on the pedals. That is often a problem area that can cause pain.
Stephen Taylor Thanks! I'm going to check my feet position and my HIHAT pedal orientation.
Lol. Im sorry bud I was just kidding. 1:09...
Thanks though, I have the same issue and plan to start jamming again. I drop my sticks like crazy. I just don't have the grip anymore my right thumb tingles and is weak. Ill try this stuff out.
Dont know if its related but didnt start happening till I started playing with my thumb facing up.

men !!! what can I do for my back or shoulders? ... thanks :D
Wow, you and me both!
Wow look how young Stephen looks 👀
you said to do this 6 times in a row 3 times a day, or did i get you wrong? i'm doing this a little and they really help me, so thank you... is there any other position for the 5th stretch? i find it a bit awkward and not really feeling the stretch, i know i'm doing it right but i'm a bit more flexible than average people (i've been told by kinesiologyst's)
I like how you prefer to sit on your little chair when you could sit on that comfortable looking sofa behind you :D
Fucking genius man. Thanks. I am not a drummer but I draw often. I would like to drum one day. I am still young enough to pick it up, but my wrists often hurt due to tensity.
You don't have to be a drummer for this to help. Drawing has many repetitive motions used (I was almost a graphic arts major in college so I did a ton of drawing). Start stretching lightly before, during, and after you draw. I think that you'll find things begin to sort themselves out. If they don't, contact an A.R.T. specialist and they will get you on the road to health. Hope that helps!
im actually have a little bit of pain on my right foot when i practice my pedal speed, i do stretch but is there any specific stretch for the foot in particular or is that just a temporary pain?
*having
mine is in the elbow...
Hmm
TO FAVOURITIES FTW
Ack! my aching back, nerves, knees, feet...and now, my hands. figures
Hey man, Do you think the ART visit is necessary, or will just the stretches suffice?
Just made a call to an ART certified chiropractor. Thanks so much for the advice man! Really looking forward to meeting with him.
drumsurf7 Let me know how it turns out. I've referred my students to ART practicioners all of the world. It helped me. Hope it does the same for you.
***** Will do. I just read an interview with Thomas Lang about him getting surgery for carpal tunnel, after trying other methods of solving the problem for years. My symptoms aren't that bad compared to some stuff I've read, so hopefully ART will do the trick.
You're probably hitting very hard (and even more probably burying the beater into the head). Try letting the beater come off the head after you hit. It'll take some time, you'll thank me later :)
Disclaimer: I might be wrong :)
man, this video should be stuck on the front of ALL musical instrument packaging, like the warnings on a pack of smokes.
why didn't anyone show me this stuff when i started out?
the government should buy you a bus and a foghorn to spread this word.
i'm sure you'd rather be gigging, though!
thanks,
and best wishes.
2021 anyone?
Brother a Wonderful Video because [[Prevention in the first case]] is MUCH Better than Cure Well Done (but for some living with CT it is Still Great Advice Just take it very very slowly).I will really try you to Apply you & your Doctors Advice.
Bro Can you Please tell me where my additional comments are that I wrote Below[the above my words above this block of text Pointing to Different maybe Helpful other Movies that offered personal Techniques of mine that iv'e has foundhelped me & others which might Help more people & that's my only Mo to try to make other drummers lives a little better IF i can.I am Nobody special i'm just a very very Ill wheelchaired drummer I hope you did not take any offence to anything I typed as in No way was I critiquing your film as Any help for our family is good.
Have you been to see an A.R.T. specialist? I'm in Nashville and most of the musicians I know wind up seeing my doctor at some point. What they do works and is non-invasive.
Why is this guy acting like hes a doctor. Hes not a doctor!
Thank you.
You're welcome my friend!
