    Couple of thoughts -
    1. Could have Richard E Grant been the Great Intelligence that entered his timeline... maybe there is some residue and mingling?
2.With this episode I felt some strong feels to Family of Blood as well as The Empty Child.
    3. I am a cryer by nature - I cry easily and often... so I feel it every time because this doctor cries as easily as I do so I really relate to this one. Ncuti is most likely going to become my favourite doctor since the restart (Tom Baker is my doctor) So I may finally have to have a my doctor of Classic, and a my doctor of New Who....
    4. If the doctor is going to have a romance, I much prefer and in and out type character like River Song than the normal companion like Rose. Part of me really hopes that Rogue comes back but in and out like River Song, over the seasons and over multiple doctors...
    5. I was expecting it to be Rose, and I was certain the earrings are what saved her - because battle mode was mentioned in the beginning and that seemed like a setup line to me.
    6. Earlier I mentioned the The empty Child - And Rogue and The Doctor - were like Jack and the Doctor but flipped (The Doctor seemed more flirtier more Jack like where as Rogue seemed more damaged and broken and withdrawn just the way the Doctor was in the First season of New who.) And it was also the Doctor was off flirting with the offworlder (like Rose did)...
    7. Back to the "floating heads" I was so happy to see Jo Martin with everyone going on how Ncuti is the first black doctor. This shows that Jo Martin is also there as a black doctor.
    8. The DnD reference and not knowing cosplay - Maybe 3rd edition player? Insight was a skill then and cosplay wasn't near as big/popular or as well known.
    9. Would it be Dr. who if the aliens didn't occasionally look hokey/corny?

      1. Could be. I’ve seen a few people posit that.
      2. I also got Family of Blood vibes when the Doctor talked about stranding them in another dimension to suffer.

I thought the first episode was pretty standard even if the overall execution was flawed. TARDIS materializes on a ship which has a broken thing that is endangering the inhabitants of the aforementioned ship and the Doctor does something clever/finds information which resolves the plot. There's at least one of these every season I think.

Loved Watching the doctor pull 😂
Never bought a captain jack recast
But If Rouge is a prequel to Jack's story, showing him before he had his memories stolen by the Time Agency and before meeting the Ninth Doctor, I would be intrigued by a recast (if Rouge does turn out to be Jack).
In Jack's second episode, "The Doctor Dances- the Doctor dancing featured in this episode. He is American, uses a fake name, and jack came from the 51st century-a detail highlighted twice in the series. These elements are very suggestive, but perhaps deliberately so to mess with fans.
The proposal scandle scene and the doctor falling so fast for Rouge. reminded me of The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith, like if finding Rouge might be a trap leading to the new boss He mentioned..

A thread of how sutekh came about to return : did you notice the way the MASTER played the flute on the planet where Yaz left him when he overtook the doctor? Don't you think he could have awoken sutek? and since then it's been on the TARDIS? Could Jodie have unleashed the toymaker, when she said at regeneration monet: TAG YOU ARE IT! (the toymaker was then it, and got freed... my take on it!). Then we meet the Master as isaac newton, cuz the way is tone becomes ominous and dark when he says "Mavity" affecting all reality for 14th & 15th... Nucti then perpetrated a satanic scrifice : on christmas eve the darkest day of the year he slayed the goblin king, using mavity on a spike of a church... dark sacrifice no? • @micron000
    @micron000 Месяц назад +3

I agree, that wasn't a bad thing. I mean, my first thought after watching was finally, an episode that actually feels like good ol' NuWho!
It wasn't anything groundbreaking, but it still had everything I could want from a good DW story - It was fun and camp, yet emotional at times; great setting, cool uncomplicated monsters, awesome character moments. I feel like I finally got a chance to actually get to know Ruby and 15 better as people, and see what they're actually like on a run-in-the-mill type of adventure. The Doctor felt more like the Doctor here than he did in many of the previous stories imo, and Ruby finally showed some real agency as a companion (she also did in 73 yards and Boom, but there she didn't really have a choice but to be separated from the Doctor; I liked that in this case, they just decided to split and she actually chose to do her own thing). I do wish it would have happened much earlier in the season, but better late then never I suppose lol :)
I also loved the chemistry between Ncuti and Jonathan Groff, and Rogue's character was really interesting (Yeah, similar to Captain Jack in many aspects, but I personally didn't mind it at all), so I hope he does come back in the future! But even if we don't get to see him again, it was a great choice of guest star and a very cool dynamic to watch unfold. I especially loved the scene where they danced, and how they used the homophobia of the era in their favour (and the Doctor's reaction to the proposal was also very intriguing).
My only, very tiny gripe tbh, is how quickly the Doctor believed Ruby was actually gone. I mean, I liked Ruby's side of it, using the earring's previously established combat-mode and "cosplaying" was very clever on her part and I can totally believe it worked. It was also well established that the creatures don't identify each other very quickly so I can even buy them not clocking her. However, personally, since all the Chuldur were in bird-form, and she was the only one that wasn't, I immediately assumed it was actually the real Ruby. When the Doctor ran off, I expected him to go search for her body, to want to verify that she's actually dead before he rains down hell on them.. But instead he just went away to cry, which was a bit disappointing tbh. I'm not one of the people who has a problem with him crying in every episode, I understand what you're saying about it losing some of the impact, but I actually think that's a nice character trait for 15; he's emotional and wears his heart(s) on his sleeve and that's cool. I just didn't like how quickly he accepted it without even checking - and even if he did believe it and just felt like crying, I don't get why he had to go off to the side to do so. I doubt he'd be the kind of character who cares about other people seeing him cry, both since he hadn't so far, and cause that's such a human male-ego type of trait that doesn't fit the Doctor imo, but oh well.
Thank you for another great review :)

I fully agree on the crying. Too often and it loses it's impact. Did he cry in 73 yards? I know he was sorry but I don't recall crying.
Yeah I agree, from early on it was obviously just a standard Who episode. I enjoyed it for what it was, having never watched a single bit of Bridgerton. I have nothing against period dramas set then but Bridgerton doesn't interest me one bit. Rogue may not be Captain Jack but he's clearly RTD's replacement for him, which means John Barrowman is unlikely to return. The one thing I didn't like and it took me out of the episode where the bird heads, one of them look liked it was straight out of Sesame Street.
I hadn't spotted Richard E Grants head and while TCOFD is fun, I hope he's not from that version. It should remain fully non-canon.

6:06 Their overtly horny interactions certainly weren't my idea of "subdued" flirting. I don't like the Doctor being lovey-dovey, full stop, but here he was virtually gagging for it. That said, I'd already lost interest in this story long before the flirting started. I've really enjoyed all the episodes in the RTD2 era so far, but this was a total dud from my POV.

Did I use the word subdued in relation to the flirting from the Doctor? I might have said it in relation to Rouge in comparison to how Jack flirts. In fact the Doctor here was flirting a lot like Jack flirts.
I wouldn’t want him doing it every week but I don’t mind it here.

Time lords don’t even think about gender in the same way as us. To quote the 12th Doctor “were the most civilized civilization in the universe. We’re billions of years beyond your petty human obsession with gender”
The Doctor isn’t “gay” they just are attracted to individuals. Those individuals might be male, female or other, it wouldn’t matter to The Doctor.

Is there really much overlap between audiences for a children's monster-of-the-week fantasy adventure series and a hammy, hokey revisionist period drama? I couldn't give a hoot about Downton/Bridgerton/Trumpton/Straight Outta Compton or whatever. Garbage episode that instantly dated itself.
