Kvothe is one of the few "smart" characters in books that I feel that really is smart and not just believe him or herself smart. And still sometimes being too smart puts him in trouble. That's one of the reasons I love these books so much^^

I adore Qvothe! I guess I'm the opposite of most people. Where many think he's a "Mary Sue," I'm like, "Finally! A main character who is smart and works really hard in school!" One of my biggest struggles with most books, TV shows, and movies, etc., is that the main character so often doesn't care about school or working hard. But, for better or for worse, Qvothe doesn't do anything half way. Whether it's school or playing the lute, he puts his everything into it.
Sure, he can be obnoxious, but I feel like it's easy to understand why he is this way. His apparent arrogance is his armor. It's the proverbial chip on his shoulder. His people, the Edema Ruh, are thought of as the bottom dwellers in the hierarchy of his world, so he overcompensates to prove that he's just as good if not better than his classmates who were born to privilege. And he may be desperate and manipulative and driven to make money and do whatever it takes to stay in school, but that's only because he has no support system. He's just trying to fend for himself in the only ways he knows how.
The tragedies of Qvothe's life have shaped him into who and what he is. And though he's brilliant in many ways...he's also just a stupid, angsty, confused teen.

I know I'm a bit late but I got to say that Denna becomes more and more interesting for me everytime I read the book. The first time I read the book she was quite obnoxious to me, but after re-reading I started grasping some details in her behaviour and some red flags in my rejection of her too. She's evassive, but so is Kvothe, or Elodin, or other characters. She's mysterious, but so is Kvothe, but the thing is we know his background because he's telling the story, so he didn't know by that time the details on her story. She's ambitious, kind of clever and lonely with a wicked past... again, pretty much like Kvothe, but with less opportunities than him and being a pretty girl in a sexist world. The more I know about her and I understand her, the more I like her actually. I don't mean she's perfect, or that she didn't commit mistakes, of course she did, everyone does. But I like her.

I think this might be my favorite series of books. I dont know why people dislike Kvothe except maybe they aren't looking at the story from the point of view that Kvothe is looking back on his younger, more ignorant self. I feel like Mr. Rothfuss does an amazing job of fleshing out his character. Hes not perfect and as he's telling his story he includes all his flaws, like being overly confident in his abilities, and his insecurity and lack of experience with women and the confusion and akwardness of being in love for the first time. His continued habit of making bad choices due to emotions rather than logic and reason, trying to make himself out as someone powerful and untouchable person who cant be hurt or beaten. You know, your typical 15 year old boy trying to be the cool kid, that really just feels scared and alone most of the time.

I felt the same way. I would have had less of a problem with it if he was an adult but this is supposed to be a 15-year-old kid. To me, it read like some guy’s self-insert fantasy. And I think it made me angrier because if it was a female author and a female character, I felt there would be a LOT more hate for it. A lot of people I know enjoyed the book, though, so I guess it’s just not my jam.

I agree, it was a 3 - 3,5 stars book for me, I just finished it last week. I loved the school setting, so around the middle of the book there was a good 200 pages that I flied through, but some parts before and after that were just unnecessarily long, and just meandering imo. People say that book 2 is even more slow and meandering, so I don't really feel like reading it any time soon.

This one I started to read on Kindle while on vacation (oh the good old days, pre pandemic days where one can go to a hotel and read on the beach) and immediately after reading I purchased the second book and read it too. I got hooked by the end of the first chapter and still am hooked. I just hope that Mr. Rothfuss does not go George RR Martin route and sacrifice the third book for the TV series (GOT tv series I just watched the first season and they are not even that good and the books are so so goood). Never bothered with the novella since I'm not particularly interested in that character. But this one deserves all the high praise it receives as far as I'm concerned.

Advise for reading book 2 and enjoying it: don't expect much of magical school setting, try to read between the lines as much as you can, pay special attention to the meaning of every song/poem/legend and look for wordplay.
And if you really want to get deep into it, you can read these posts after each chapter for better understanding: www.tor.com/series/patrick-rothfuss-reread/
The second book may seem like NOTHING is happening but it's the main source of most theories (and there are quite a few also being pretty good!). I appreciated it much more after I looked into fan theories and discussions.

I gave it a solid 4 +, my biggest peeve was the love interest I just hated like everybody else. Boude pas ton plaisir, bask in the pleasure of Tome 1 because Tome 2 (a 3 on my GR) is fun but goes NO effing WHERE! And given that Rothfuss has not written a single word of book 3 in 9 years according to his publisher who despaired all over social media, this is fantasy coitus interruptus of the highest order :((((

I love this book and its sequel. I love all the little mysteries they have that need to be solved. I also really enjoy all the different folklore stories told throughout. Something about reading this series is just so relaxing for me. I don't like action, so I enjoy the slow pace and just being stuck in one place. The boring part for me was the action scene when they were fighting the dragon. God that was boring.I also like how kvothe is so good at everything. It feels natural to me.

I re-read The Name of the Wind earlier this month. I believe that Kvothe is an unreliable narrator that is trying to make himself look good, that's why he seems a little Mary Sue-y sometimes. It's even mentioned at the beginning that every good story is partially fake.

Also, Kvothe is Kvothe's biggest problem, not everyone likes him and he's responsible for the current state of the world. He also has an exagerrated sense of self worth, and in the frame story Kote refers to himself as an idiot.

I actually just finished this and was looking through reviews to see if people feel the way I do about it... I feel so far this was the closest to my opinion, I loathed Denna and her relationship with Kvothe. His friends, the magic and the school were all fun, the side characters were good, like the old man he met in Tarbean... the "what what" guy (can't remember the name) who recognized him even after he was cleaned up. I didn't like the ending with Bast using intimidation on Chronicler/Devan to get his way, even if I do understand why, he felt like a bully and I loath bullies so I'm not a fan of Bast. Ambrose was an almost Draco Malfoy type, easy to dislike but was good for the story and I enjoyed their little back n forth.
I will say this though, Kvothe is easily the dumbest smart character I've ever seen.

@ the quote in the expanse: I'm on book 7 and I haven't noticed anything sexist in the writing, and I'm usually really sensitive to these things!! The authors adjust the prose depending on who's chapter it is, so you might get more provocative similes if it's Miller's chapter, for instance. I wouldn't think too much of that quote, aside from the fact that it's kinda hilarious 😂😂

I personally found Leviathan Wakes to be the weakest book in the series. Starting with Caliban’s War there are more viewpoints and more moving parts. I thought Name of the Wind was decent but Wise Man’s Fear...oof.

Honestly, I am still flabbergasted why some people love this book. I'm definitely of the opinion to let others like what they like. In this case, though, I just genuinely don't understand. Kvothe, to me, was anything but an interesting, multi-faceted character. He's too unbalanced as a character, imho, because as far as I remember, he didn't really have much if any character flaws, and the concept of duality (which I very much appreciate in literature) completely fell flat with this one.
I'm also not impressed by the portrayal of women in this book. They have no agency of their own, are very surface level developed, or are talked in a way where teenage bois can lust over them.
    Thanks, but no thanks.

I have always read Kvothe as kind of an unreliable narrator because he's telling his story from his POV and he is arrogant so he's going to exaggerate the perception of himself.
